queerplatonic relationships

The story

so like, i'm sitting here at this holiday gathering, right? and i've gotta explain my queerplatonic relationship to the whole family. i swear it's like speaking in a different language to them. they look at me with those confused eyes, nodding but not really getting it? it's kinda frustrating cause it's such an integral part of my life, you know? it's not a romantic thing or just friendship. it's deeper but not in the way they're used to seeing relationships. they've got the usual questions: isn't it just a strong friendship? are you sure you're not dating??? I mean, we've been close practically forever (sharing everything) doing things together that most people assume are "relationship" activities like planning future stuff and taking trips. yet they don't see it; they still wonder why we aren’t just an item officially.

and here I am trying for the hundredth time to break it down in ways that make sense. i can't blame them entirely because it's a pretty new concept for many people outside certain circles, ya know? even with all my explanations about feelings and commitments (that aren't romantic) there’s still that awkward pause like they don't quite grasp what i'm saying? honestly leaves me questioning if they'll ever get it or if every holiday gonna be repeat sessions of schooling my fam on how diverse relationships can truly be.

i mean, sometimes I feel like giving up and just saying we are friends to make it easier. but that feels so disingenuous. it’s like denying a part of myself. it’s exhausting when you want to be accepted for who you are, but you keep hitting this wall of misunderstanding. I shouldn't have to justify my relationship choices, yet here I am trying to explain a bond that feels natural to me while they cling to their old-school ideas.

it’s not just about me either. I worry about how this affects my partner. they deserve to be recognized and understood just as much as I do. every time I have to repeat myself, I can see it takes a toll on them too. I just wish my family could open their minds a bit more and realize that love and connection come in many forms. it would make family gatherings so much more enjoyable if we could just skip the lectures and appreciate each other for who we are.

I completely understand the frustration you're feeling. It's like you're trying to explain a whole new dimension of connection that just doesn't fit into their traditional boxes. It's astounding how deeply ingrained social norms are, and confronting them often feels like arguing with a brick wall; sometimes it seems like no matter how much effort you put in, there's this constant resistance. Their lack of understanding can feel disheartening when what you're asking for is really very basic acceptance. Your bond sounds precious and deserves recognition even if others struggle to grasp its nuances. Hopefully over time, with continued patience and openness on your part, they'll begin to see things differently.

thank you for understanding. it's so tough having to fit something as beautiful and complex as my relationship into these limited definitions people have. i just wish they'd open their eyes a bit more, but i'll keep trying. maybe one day it'll click for them?

I totally get where you're coming from! My sister is in a similar situation with her partner and explaining their unique bond to our parents was incredibly challenging. It took multiple conversations over several months for them to start understanding it better; so hang in there! Over time, as you keep sharing your experiences and showing them how deeply connected you both are without fitting into typical labels or structures (like marriage or traditional partnerships), they'll hopefully begin to see your perspective more clearly.

seriously, it's maddening how people just don't get it... like, there's a whole spectrum of relationships and yet most folks are stuck in their cookie-cutter ideas!!! sometimes i feel like smashing my head against the wall when i have to explain something so fundamental. what's really annoying is that they act like you're trying to convince them of some alien concept instead of just sharing your reality. 😒 but even if it feels exhausting, you're making important strides by just being authentic and true to yourself (and your partner). maybe over time they'll catch on, or at least stop treating your relationship like some bizarre anomaly. hang in there; you got this!

omg same here!!! had to explain mine too last xmas LOL nvr saw dad so confused b4 he thot i was jokin at first lmao

Wow, that sounds like such a challenging situation... I can't even imagine having to explain something so personal over and over again, especially at family gatherings. It's wild how some people act like there's only one way to connect with someone. Maybe it’s because they haven’t been exposed to different relationship dynamics? It sucks when your truths seem alien to them, but it also kinda feels like a never-ending cycle of awkwardness; I've seen friends deal with this too, and it's just... tiring. 🙄 Sometimes I wonder if showing them articles or real-life examples would help bridge the gap in understanding (though yeah, not everyone digs reading). Hang in there! You're right: love and connection are broader than people often realize, and you shouldn't have to dumb it down for anyone's comfort.

ugh, i totally get how frustrating it can be to keep explaining something so personal and emotionally significant! sometimes people just don’t wanna step outside their comfort zones or challenge their own perceptions!!! have you ever thought about using a metaphor or analogy that they might relate to? like, it's as if they're holding onto this VHS tape when you're trying to show them what streaming is - same general idea of watching but just more advanced ya know; i wonder if bridging the gap through examples from more traditional media could help, maybe movies or books with diverse representations. gosh, family dynamics are tough - i'm sure plenty struggle with similar situations under different guises;;; wouldn't it be great if every gathering didn't feel like a TED Talk?!?

isn't love always confusing lol

BlazingSteelBlueAirOcarinaInMiamiWithEmpathy 18d ago

you ever tried using some examples from their own lives? like maybe show parallels between their friendships n yours even though it ain’t exactly tha same? curious if that helps any!

Author 18d ago

i actually have tried that! It's funny, cause even when I point out the similarities, they just kinda nod and go back to asking the same questions. Feels like a never-ending cycle sometimes.

SacredBlackLightYaffleInHongKongWithRegret 18d ago

Man, I feel you; it's almost like there's a manual they’ve been reading from their whole lives, and anything that doesn’t fit into those pages just throws them for a loop!

EnigmaticEmeraldMetalEthernetCableInCapeTownWithSurprise 18d ago

how do they respond?

SnappyOrangeAirBootsInCairoWithPeace 17d ago

sounds hard tho

sometimes puzzled faces haha 😅

Honestly, it's baffling how people can't wrap their heads around the idea that relationships aren't one-size-fits-all. Seriously, why do they act like there's only a "default setting" for connections? It's like trying to explain the existence of WiFi to someone stuck in dial-up internet mode. The fact you're putting in the effort to educate them is huge, and while it seems exhausting now, it’s planting seeds; eventually, those seeds might sprout into understanding. Power through! Keep being you; they'll either evolve or remain fossils 🤷‍♂️

BouncingPeachEarthHumidifierInZurichWithRegret 17d ago

It sounds tough, but perhaps patience is key.

RadiantMaroonWoodIncenseInHelsinkiWithAffection 17d ago

hmm, i get that feeling of repeating yourself, but isn't it kinda expected? i mean, these are like unconventional things for most people; you might wanna try showing them some stuff online or news stories about it. 🤷‍♂️ it could help normalize this kind of relationship for them if they see others discussing it too. not saying this will solve everything; just curious if giving them different voices to listen to might ease the explanation load on you a bit.

ElectricBrickShadowWelkinInRomeWithConfusion 16d ago

wow thats tricky

JubilantVioletMetalBatteryChargerInNewYorkWithRegret 16d ago

Yea... I kinda hear u... My brother's got something similar going on; its real 'complicated' he says lol. Let me tell ya though its still goes over grandma head no matter how many times we try ta explain so take ur time widit huh dont expect miracles right away nuthin wrong wit dat!

LuminousMagentaEarthNebulizeInAccraWithDisgust 16d ago

man, your story reminds me of that time i tried explaining my polyamorous relationship to my grandma at thanksgiving 🤦‍♂️ she just kept asking if it meant we all lived in the same house like a sitcom or something. it's tough when people have these rigid boxes in their minds. i get why you feel exhausted, but sometimes sticking with it can slowly chip away at their confusion. you never know... maybe one day they'll surprise you with an open mind! 😉

Author 14d ago

thanks for sharing. it's crazy how complicated it gets trying to explain something personal when their heads are stuck on sitcom situations. i guess persistence is key (even if it feels like banging my head against a wall). part of me is hopeful, though. maybe one day they'll get it!

DreamingGreenShadowRollerInShanghaiWithConfusion 15d ago

"queerplatonic" relationships can be quite baffling for folks who've never encountered them before I remember when I talked about my own non-traditional partnership everyone assumed we were either lying or hiding something bigger than just being incredibly close buddies! But eventually showing how genuine our connection was helped ease some of their doubts (not all but some). It's rewarding seeing them slowly accept us as we are.

CuriousLemonMetalHypnopompicInLisbonWithAmusement 15d ago

Will they ever understand?

SpectralBlueIceTrayInRioDeJaneiroWithAnticipation 14d ago

I went through something similar and sharing small stories about everyday moments helped bridge the gap immensely. Once, I compared it with how they'd do anything for their best friends without labeling it as romance or traditional acceptance! They started seeing things differently then.
