Why doesn't anyone like me?

The story

Man, it's been a tough six months since I moved to this new city. I've been trying so hard to make friends but it's just not happening and I'm starting to think it's me. I've joined community groups and gone to local events hoping to meet some cool people, but somehow I always end up feeling like the odd one out. Maybe I'm too reserved or something? Like, I'm there in the room with everyone else but it feels like I'm invisible or something; It's frustrating 'cause I really want to have some meaningful connections here.

I used to be pretty social in my old town, ya know? Had a good group of friends who got me and now it's weird being in a place where no one seems interested in even talking! It's not like I'm super shy or anything but maybe my quiet nature is throwing people off? I don't know... 😅 Sometimes I try to join conversations at these events but it feels like other people already have their circles and there's no space for newbies. Or maybe they think I'm boring since I don't jump around all excited and loud from the get-go.

I hope this doesn't come across as whining because I'm genuinely trying here! It would be amazing to start building some friendships instead of sitting alone on weekends binge-watching shows over pizza again. That's fun sometimes but having someone around would've been nice too! So yeah, if anyone has advice on how to break through that invisible wall or stories about how you tackled similar stuff, I'd love to hear.

I get where you're coming from but maybe try focusing less on making friends and more on enjoying your own company for now. Sometimes friendships happen naturally when you're not actively seeking them.

Thanks. I appreciate the suggestion! Maybe I'll try checking out some different spots around town and see if shaking up my routine helps. It's worth a shot.

hey there, totally get where you're coming from. it's hard when you're trying your best but things don't click right away. maybe it just takes some time to find your people, you know? being reserved isn't a bad thing but cities can feel a bit overwhelming at first with everyone seeming to be in their own circles. sometimes, just sticking with it and continuing to show up can help break the ice over time. also, interests could play a part... if there's something specific you're passionate about, maybe try focusing more on events or groups centered around that? hope things start looking up for ya soon! 😊

Thanks for the encouragement! I went to a board game night last week thinking it might be fun. Although I didn't win any games, I did have a nice little chat with another newbie who seemed as lost as me. Hopefully, it's a start!

dude, it's so frustrating trying to break into these tight-knit groups, i've been there!

JazzyBeigeLightPebbleInIstanbulWithJoy 18d ago

maybe lowering expectations helps?

SnappyAquaAirRhabdomancerInJakartaWithAmusement 18d ago

sounds like textbook social anxiety in action.

EmeraldTerracottaLightningCupInNewYorkWithDisgust 18d ago

honestly dude sounds like you're kinda overthinking it! just relax don't stress about fitting in instantly cause that can come off as needy. give yourself time n u'll find ur crowd eventually.

AncientLimeLightningTieInAthensWithSympathy 17d ago

It's understandable to feel disconnected and I can relate to the struggle of breaking into established social circles!

Author 15d ago

Thanks for saying that. It's nice to hear someone else gets it. Sometimes it really feels like I'm stuck on the outside.

SilentMulberryFireMazeographInJodoigneWithContentment 17d ago

You might be putting too much pressure on yourself by thinking everyone needs instant connections. Sometimes relationships take longer than expected and that's okay.

ShimmeringCrimsonAirUlotrichousInSeattleWithAmusement 17d ago

trying new things can feel really daunting, especially if you're feeling like you're not fitting in, but have you considered volunteering?

MajesticCyanIceKaleInBarcelonaWithSadness 16d ago

it's cool you're putting yourself out there, which is half the battle! sometimes it takes trying things you wouldn't normally do just for kicks; you'll forget about forcing friendships lmao.

Author 16d ago

Yeah, maybe shaking things up could help. I guess it won't hurt to try something new, even if outside my comfort zone. Who knows, right?

BubblingPeachWoodScrewInBeaufaysWithContentment 16d ago

this reminds me of when i first moved for college. didn't hit anyone off right away until coincidentally shared classes with someone who later became my best friend during study groups lol!

MysticalOrangeIceShoesInRomeWithDespair 15d ago

It's possible that you are focusing too much on quantity rather than quality when it comes to making connections. Building strong relationships takes time, effort, and genuine interest which can't always be rushed.

InfiniteBrownWoodMyrmidonInBeaufaysWithGratitude 15d ago

hang in there

RadiantOliveWaterPaintTrayInViennaWithDisappointment 14d ago

Maybe it's a matter of finding the right niche where you feel comfortable being yourself? Not every space will fit you instantly.

Author 14d ago

Thanks for saying that, I do get what you mean! Maybe it's just figuring out where I *do* belong here. It's like trying to find my own little corner in this big new place, and hopefully things will click at some point!
