be nice to people

The story

Decided to help my neighbor build a fence the other day. Weird thing is, they've never even bothered acknowledging the times I was there for them before...like that time I fixed their lawnmower that wouldn't start all day. But hey, being nice isn't always about getting kudos for every little favor you do! It’s more of a way of life, you know? Sometimes the universe springs surprises in your path when you least expect it, which kinda makes it worth it.

Now here's where it gets interesting... About a week after we finished that fence, I found out this particular neighbor had gone and told everyone else on our street what a “stand-up person” I was. Not sure why they suddenly decided to play Mr. Friendly after years of giving me the cold shoulder; honestly surprised anyone even noticed, considering how tight-lipped they usually are!

Whether you're friendly or not doesn't erase the frustration that creeps up when people don't appreciate basic acts of kindness (seriously... ever heard of saying 'thanks'?!). Yet every now and then...bam!!!... a curveball from destiny lands at your feet just like that....

So imagine my shock! Suddenly neighbors I've barely exchanged pleasantries with are waving over fences and asking if I'm free for coffee sometime soon (though they generally felt pretty standoffish before!), yet maybe there's an art to this whole being-nice enterprise after all: shake expectations off your shoulders like pesky leaves because who knows what lies around any given corner?

Going beyond being simply 'nice' and turning real-world experience into something surprisingly cheerful has its rewards... Even if many others fail constantly showing gratitude through words alone...

yeah i get helping without expectation is important but sometimes i think it's ok to set boundaries too; otherwise some people just take advantage without care really bugs me
