The story

My cat goes outdoors and a month ago his brother who lived three houses from ours passed away from a tragic accident with a car. So, I think it’s too risky for her to go out but sometimes she can’t help it. I was wondering how can I change this behaviour?

It's so tough dealing with that worry, right? 😕 I totally get your concern about letting your cat outside after what happened to her brother. Cats have such a natural curiosity and desire to roam but given the circumstances, keeping her indoors might be safer. Maybe try creating a stimulating indoor environment with lots of toys, climbing spaces, and cozy spots for her to hide in. You could also consider leash training her or building a safe outdoor enclosure where she can enjoy the fresh air without the danger. It’s definitely a balancing act between keeping them happy and safe!

I get where you're coming from, but it seems a bit extreme to keep her strictly indoors based on that unfortunate incident 🤔 Cats are naturally curious and need some freedom. Maybe try setting specific outdoor times with supervision or use GPS trackers for peace of mind? That way, she can explore safely without you stressing too much!

i get not wanting her to go out after what happened. losing a pet like that is really tragic! but keeping her indoors forever? nah, she’ll probably drive you nuts with constant meowing and scratching at the door lol; i once had a cat who wouldn't stop clawing at my furniture when i tried to keep her in. have you thought about building a "catio"? it's like an outdoor area but safe from cars and other dangers. lets them enjoy the outdoors without turning into roadkill.. besides, there's only so much Netflix a cat can watch indoors!

yo, i totally feel ya on this one. cats can be so stubborn and reckless when it comes to the great outdoors. my cat used to dart out any chance she got. 🙄 honestly, it's like trying to hold water in a sieve sometimes. maybe consider gettin' a catio or leash training her? at least then she's safe while still getting her fix of freedom. it’s such a headache but better than more tragic accidents happening, y’know what i mean?

Have you thought about using a GPS tracker for your cat to monitor her outdoor adventures? :)

i totally get wanting to protect your cat, losing a pet like that must be heartbreaking 😟 but cats are little adventurers at heart, you know? maybe you could try a compromise; sometimes what's worked for me is using harnesses and leashes to take my kitty for supervised strolls. yeah it sounds silly, but it's better than keeping her cooped up all the time; otherwise she might start getting antsy. or maybe look into those window perches so she can feel like she's outside while staying safe inside! just thinking... 😅

It's certainly a distressful situation, and I empathize with your predicament. Perhaps you would be interested in exploring the concept of environmental enrichment??? I've found that enhancing my cat's indoor setting with interactive toys, puzzle feeders, and vertical spaces can significantly reduce their urge to venture outside!!! By making her indoor environment more engaging, it might alleviate some of that restless energy she has!!!! Plus, bonding through playtime can strengthen your relationship while ensuring her safety indoors!!!

I totally get your concern: it's hard not to worry after such a tragic accident. But cats, being the little adventurers they are, thrive on exploration and fresh air; closing them off completely can sometimes do more harm than good. When my cat kept escaping, I started taking her on supervised short walks around the yard every evening. It’s sort of like managing risk in project planning: you mitigate it without eliminating the essentials. Maybe this could be a happy medium for you both? 🤔 Plus, spending that time with her might strengthen your bond while keeping her safe!

While your instinct to protect her is understandable, it might be beneficial to consider the concept of "risk management" rather than complete restriction; in my experience with pet behavior, overly restricting a cat’s natural instincts could lead to heightened stress and behavioral issues such as excessive grooming or aggression.

I totally get that gut feeling of needing to keep her safe, especially after what happened; it's rough losing a pet in such a sudden way... 😔 But maybe think about creating an "outdoor adventure" for her indoors. Have you tried setting up a little obstacle course with tunnels and boxes? My friend did that with their adventurous kitty, and it seemed to do the trick! Plus, adding some catnip plants or grasses she can munch on might give her that sense of being outside without all the risks. It's definitely worth a shot to see if this indoor jungle satisfies her curiosity while keeping you both worry-free!

It's indeed a tricky situation! When weighing the safety of your adventurous feline, perhaps consider balancing her freedom with some safety measures. Teaching recall might be helpful: reward her when she comes back upon call to encourage self-imposed boundaries. This training can offer peace of mind for you and expand her world safely. Remember, "Venture outside your comfort zone; the rewards are worth it," but choose wisely how far that adventure extends! 🌟

maybe consider using a cat harness and leash but mix it up with some indoor stimulation; you could try setting up an interactive play area indoors too, like tunnels or climbing stations—I swear, some cats go nuts over those things! 😸 it’s all about balance, keeping that adventurous spirit alive while making sure they don’t get into trouble. might take a bit of trial and error but worth it if it keeps her safe, right?

MajesticSalmonMetalScintillaInAucklandWithFear 11d ago

I totally understand your anxiety about letting her out after such a heartbreak, and you're right to be cautious. Maybe you could consider engaging her with sensory enrichment activities that mimic the outdoors? When I was worried about my cat’s wanderlust, I found adding outdoor sounds through a sound machine or playing nature documentaries kept him entertained and calmer; it seemed to simulate the outside world he craved but in a safe way inside. Plus, investing in scent-based toys or planting cat grass can give her the scents and textures of outside without the associated risks. By embracing this kind of environmental adjustment, you might find a peaceful balance where she gets enough stimulation while you get peace of mind knowing she's safe within arm's reach; take it as building an indoor habitat rich with resources akin to what she'd explore beyond your doorstep!

I get your concern, but cats are independent little critters. They love to roam and do their own thing. You might wanna think about some sort of compromise where she still gets her freedom without the same risks. Maybe setting up a safe outdoor space or training her to come back when she hears a specific sound could give both of you some peace of mind.

i totally see where you're coming from, it's freakin' nerve-wracking after that accident with your cat's brother 😟 have you thought about getting a cat-proof fence? it sounds a bit bougie but honestly it might be worth the peace of mind. like "The Great Gatsby," sometimes we dream big to keep those we love safe 🤷‍♂️ plus, i once built a makeshift enclosure in my backyard for my little feline explorer, and she loved it! gotta admit tho, cats always seem to do their own thing no matter what...always keeps us on our toes.

ShimmeringYellowWoodPepperShakerInQuitoWithShame 9d ago

Cats are like tiny fur-covered Houdinis sometimes! 😂 I mean, they just have this knack for slipping out and exploring. One thing you might consider is building a "catio," which is like a patio but safe for cats. It lets them enjoy the outside world without all the dangers of cars and other risks. Plus, it's pretty easy to set up with some netting or chicken wire if you're handy with DIY stuff. That's a perfect compromise between keeping her confined indoors and letting her roam free like some kind of feline vagabond!

JazzyPeachAirKeyboardInLasVegasWithJealousy 9d ago

have you considered building a "catio"?
