How to forgive yourself for cheating?
The story
so, there's this thing that's been on my mind for a while. I found myself in a messy emotional affair with a coworker...must have been the stress at work getting to me or something. Somehow, it just happened out of nowhere. it's weird because it ended, but the guilt of my actions is eating away at me constantly and I'm worried about what it'll do to my marriage.
you know those moments when you're caught off guard by your own actions? that's where I'm at. I didn't set out to hurt anyone (not my partner, not even myself) yet here we are. My spouse doesn't deserve this kind of betrayal, and the thought of coming clean scares me; there's always that slim chance of things getting patched up, but part of me wonders if it's worth risking everything over mistakes.
I guess I'm stuck in this loop where every situation runs through my mind again and again; just questioning why I let it happen... But more so: how am I going to forgive myself? then there are times when breathing gets hard because I've let someone so important down...
maybe it's time for a change or some kind of wake-up call, you know? hating yourself can be pretty draining on top of everything else life throws your way. trying to remain hopeful though because who knows...things might turn around soon and maybe finding peace within will be the first step towards fixing what's broken 🙂

The struggle must be really tough for you right now. Forgiveness takes time and it's okay not to have all the answers immediately.
Thanks for saying that. Forgiveness seems like a distant thing right now, but maybe I'm just overthinking it (shocker). Time will tell, I guess...
sounds like you're really going through a heavy time right now 😕. nobody's perfect, and we all make mistakes even when our intentions aren't to hurt anyone; i totally understand that feeling of being blindsided by your own choices. sometimes acknowledging the guilt is step one in moving forward... have you considered talking to someone about it? sometimes just getting things off your chest with a friend or a therapist can lighten the load a bit. and hey, forgiveness might seem far away now, but it's possible 😊🌟
totally with you on how guilt can mess with your head; it's that relentless mental playback that just won't quit. i think acknowledging that feeling is half the battle though. gotta remember: nobody's perfect, and mistakes are part of life. might not make it any easier right now, but being able to sit with those feelings is kinda big in itself. figuring out a way forward, whether that's talking to someone or setting boundaries at work, could really cut through the noise and help clear up this mental loop you've got going on 🙂
been in a similar boat before... only it was just a friend, not a coworker. sometimes that guilt feels like it's gonna swallow you whole, right? i remember feeling so trapped in my own head, replaying everything like some bad movie on repeat. took me ages to work up the nerve to confront it with my partner, but strangely enough, that honesty turned out better than expected. hope you find some peace soon 🙂
Yeah, that guilt is suffocating sometimes. It's like living in a never-ending loop of regret. I'm hoping some honesty can bring relief one day. Thanks for sharing your experience.
back when i was still finding my footing in the corporate world, i ended up pulling an all-nighter after a friend sort of pressured me into a risky project at work; it didn't sit well with my conscience and the stress really hit hard, but then i realized being honest about what happened helped more than i expected.
oh man, that sounds tough. reminds me of this time when I accidentally hurt a friend's feelings by saying something stupid. it wasn't even intentional and i was so scared it ruined our friendship. we had a long talk, cleared the air, and while things aren't the same, there's relief in being honest. sometimes laying it all out is way better for your peace of mind, you know? takes guts but you might feel lighter afterward!
Acknowledging where things went wrong is already a significant step forward, so keep that focus and consider using this as a catalyst for personal growth; maybe the experience can ultimately lead to a stronger sense of self and possibly an open dialogue with your spouse.
Understandable anxiety!
It sounds like you're going through a very challenging time, and I completely sympathize with the emotional turmoil. Ever thought of seeking professional guidance? Confiding in a therapist might provide clarity and a structured way to process your emotions. It’s amazing how sometimes an outside perspective can help assess the situation more rationally, especially when things feel overwhelming!
Thanks for your kind words. Honestly, I've thought about it, but taking that step feels daunting at the moment. Maybe talking to someone could really help though... It's just hard to overcome the fear of judgment or digging too deep into what I did.
Mistakes are inevitable, but acknowledging them and actively seeking a resolution is already a step towards finding inner peace and potentially mending what’s broken.
Sounds like you're really in a bind with this situation. Just remember, beating yourself up constantly only adds more weight to what’s already pretty heavy. Maybe try focusing on small steps instead of the whole mountain, you know? Even if things feel bleak now, trust that change is possible. 🤞
Man, what a pickle you're in, huh? It's wild how stuff just sneaks up on you like that... I've been there too! In my case, it was more about a weird friendship that got way too intense, and damn, the guilt is no joke. You gotta find some way to not be eaten alive by it, though; that's crucial. Maybe it's about shifting your focus? Like finding something else to pour yourself into until things settle down or till you figure out what's next. Could help clear your mind enough to decide what step to take in this mess. Just remember: you're human, and humans screw up all the time; try not to let it consume you completely!
Wow, getting caught in a mind loop like that can be brutal, can't it?
Have you considered telling your partner about it?
I have considered telling my partner, but I'm pretty scared about how it would go. There's just so much at stake, you know? I'm not sure if confessing would make things better or just blow everything up.
it sounds like you’re really stuck in your head right now, and that can be totally consuming. i've been through situations where the weight of my own mistakes felt unbearable too, and honestly... it’s tough to sift through all those swirling thoughts. i get the urge to just rewind time and make different choices, but stressing over "what ifs" never fixed anything for me. maybe finding a way to share what you're feeling with your spouse at some point (when you feel ready) could help lift some of that burden? trusting in yourself enough to decide how much you want them to know might even give back some control. and hey, don’t underestimate tiny victories: making small changes at work or taking breaks when stress creeps up could do wonders to clear your mind a bit.
dude, that guilt is a beast to wrestle with, especially when you didn't mean for any of this chaos to happen; it's like being trapped in a web of your own making. not trying to minimize it, but maybe focusing on one step at a time could help? first things first: cut yourself some slack. everyone screws up and the mind loves to spiral into worst-case scenarios, right? reminds me of those sneaky plot twists in movies where you just sit there stunned thinking how the hell did i miss the signs... anyway, hope you're finding some moments to breathe and pause amidst all this turmoil 🙂
yeah, that guilt feels never-ending sometimes. it's tough not to be stuck in worst-case scenarios. maybe letting myself breathe without judgment is the first step... appreciate your kind words.
What does your spouse think?
...But would they understand?
Sounds tough! Have you tried therapy?
I don't know, but it seems rather like this might be one of those classic cases where emotions kind of just run wild without us even noticing until we're neck-deep in whatever mess it is; you know what I mean? It's almost fascinating how the psyche works under pressure and stress, finding these outlets that we don’t consciously choose. 🤔 When reading your story, it reminded me of when I once got swept up in a friend's drama unintentionally (different scenario, but emotional chaos nonetheless). Looking back, it taught me to sharply reassess my boundaries and priorities. Have you considered reflecting on what aspects or triggers led you down this path in the first place? Understanding them could be your ticket out of that emotional loop. Awareness might not erase the guilt entirely but perhaps give some clarity for future actions!
I guess you're right about stress making us act in such unexpected ways. It's just so hard to pinpoint exactly what pushed me there. Been trying to figure it out... Maybe seeing those signs will help next time.
Honestly speaking, everyone makes mistakes sometimes. The fact that you're aware shows room for growth already! Seeking forgiveness from yourself may help calm any remaining emotions tied into them yet conversing openly with your spouse could contribute towards rebuilding trust eventually too.
...And being kind to yourself is key.
Once had a similar situation; having an honest conversation worked wonders even though it wasn't easy initially.
