The story

having a mom who hates you is tough. i'm 17 and a guy, wishing things were different. when she admitted (while drunk) that she wanted a girl instead, it was like a punch in the gut. it's not just words; it affects everything. feeling unwanted sort of messes with your mind, you know? every conversation feels loaded with unspoken resentment, like walking on eggshells all the time. there's no natural ease or warmth which makes being around her hard. as much as i try to change her perception, nothing seems to work. trying to stay polite and respectful but it's exhausting. not gonna lie, there are times when i question my own worth 😂 what's worse is that internal doubt creeps into other areas of life too: school, friends and even future plans all feel tainted by this negativity at home.

Yeah maybe I should let go more easily.

man, it sucks feeling that weight at home but gotta say, sometimes parents can be wrapped up in their own issues and it's not even about you; we all have our own battles, right?

EternalVioletLightSpatulaInAthensWithJealousy 19d ago

that sounds incredibly tough to deal with, man; having a parent who doesn’t seem to value you for who you are can really mess with your mind. it’s like living in an emotional minefield where you're constantly second-guessing yourself. honestly, i think it's brave of you to try and change her perception but at the same time, don't let this dictate your sense of self-worth. maybe focus on building those connections outside the home that give you strength and support; it's easier said than done but surrounding yourself with people who appreciate and understand you might help ease some of that internal doubt; stay strong!

bro thats harsh but u cant do anything bout it its life maybe shes jus having a bad day idk.

I've wondered about that myself but still hurts.

sometimes you gotta accept that parents aren't gonna change and focus on building yourself up instead; concentrate on surrounding yourself with people who appreciate you for who you are, not who they wanted you to be.

dude, parents can be disappointing when they project their own issues onto you but have you ever considered that her expectations might be based on outdated gender stereotypes?

Totally feel you! My dad's like that too.

Dude, that's really rough. Ever thought about diving into something you're passionate about as an escape? Like, getting super involved in a hobby or sport that just allows you to be fully in the moment; it might not solve everything but at least it gives you some space away from all that negativity and a chance to shine in your own way. Also, whenever you're feeling down, reminding yourself of the little victories can help maintain perspective on the good things amidst all this noise.

I understand how difficult this must be but perhaps your mom's comment was influenced by her state at the time of speaking and may not reflect how she truly feels deep down.

MysticalPurpleWaterUmbrellaInBudapestWithGratitude 17d ago

man, first off, i’m really sorry you’re going through this. it’s tough carrying that kind of emotional baggage at home... and yeah, words like that leave a mark. consider finding an outlet where you can freely express yourself or maybe even talk to someone outside the situation; sometimes just venting to a friend or counselor can make a world of difference. don’t let one person’s issues define your worth because dude, you have plenty to offer no matter what she says or wishes for; focus on nurturing those aspects of yourself that make you happy or feel accomplished. keep your head up and know you’re not alone in dealing with parental expectations gone wrong.

Man, it’s crazy how family dynamics can shape our sense of self-worth and outlook on life, isn't it?

SwiftBrownEarthYaffleInSingaporeWithAmusement 15d ago

wow, that's super tough to handle at your age. you know, my buddy went through something similar with his mom and i remember how crushed he felt. one thing that helped him was getting into music; not just playing but also writing out his feelings in lyrics. it kinda gave him an outlet where he could express himself without judgment. maybe finding some form of creative expression could give you a bit of relief too? it might not change her mindset but at least you'll have a way to channel some of the frustration and confusion. hang in there, man!

JubilantSapphireFireHighballGlassInTokyoWithJoy 15d ago

Sounds like a tough situation, mate. It's really unfair when you're trying to connect with someone who's supposed to be so close, yet it feels like there's this invisible wall between you two. My cousin went through something similar and found that putting some distance helped him cope; it's not easy, but sometimes creating boundaries can give you room to breathe and think clearly about who you want to be separate from all that noise at home. Maybe finding a space or activity that’s just yours could help strengthen your confidence in other areas too!

Parents say hurtful things sometimes...

dude, your mom sounds like a piece of work. 😒 can't believe some parents think it's okay to voice their crap expectations and mess with their kid's head. ever thought about just being blunt with her? sometimes calling them out can be oddly satisfying, even if it doesn't change things much. i did that once with my dad when he was pulling similar stunts and it's like... you know you're not the problem here; it's on them. focusing on building your own sense of self-worth outside her shadow might keep you sane too bro, make sure whatever path you go isn't dictated by someone who isn't supportive. stay strong and remember she's just miserably projecting her own stuff onto you!!!
