why is my mom always mad at me?
The story
I seriously don’t get why my mom is always so mad at me. Like, no matter what I do, she finds something to complain about. It could be my grades, the friends I hang out with, or even how I clean my room. It’s exhausting.
Just the other day, I got a pretty good score on my math test. Instead of saying “good job” or something nice like that, she was all like, “Why didn’t you get 100?” Like, come on! That stuff just ruins the moment. I worked hard for that grade, and all I feel is pressure to do better. I read this quote in school that said, “Children learn what they live.” It got me thinking that maybe her constant criticism comes from how she grew up. But that doesn’t make it any easier for me to deal with.
And when it comes to my friends, it feels like she’s judging every single one of them. She analyzes them like they are some kind of project. It makes me wonder if she thinks I’m not good enough just because of who I hang out with. Ugh. Then there are the chores. I try to do my part, but she always finds something wrong. It’s like perfection is the only option.
I know she cares about my future and all, but sometimes it feels like too much. I just wish she could chill out a bit and see that I’m trying my best.

sounds like mine...:)
Your situation reminds me of when parents project their own expectations onto us. Maybe she's dealing with stress you're unaware of? Could it be that she's expressing care in her own way? I'm not sure.
I think you might be right about her stress and projecting expectations. Sometimes I wonder if she feels pressure to make sure I succeed beyond her own experiences. It's difficult to see it as care when it feels so overwhelming, though.
kinda been there too. mom used to nag about grades non-stop until i moved out.
why do parents act like perfection is the default?
Parents can be frustratingly demanding, I get it. But maybe, just maybe, she's pushing because she sees potential or something (annoying as it is). She could chill with the constant scrutiny though. Balance that pressure before it drives you nuts! 😤
It's tough dealing with that constant pressure. It sounds like you're trying really hard, and it'd be great if she could see that effort. Maybe her upbringing makes her focus on what could be better instead of celebrating what's already good. Have you tried talking to her about how it makes you feel? Sometimes opening up the conversation can help a bit, even though it's not always easy. Hang in there!
I feel you. Reminds me of my cousin's situation, who once got told by his dad that folding laundry like a 'military officer' was non-negotiable. The sky didn't fall when I folded it the regular way;) Do you think she reacts similarly to other people or is it mostly with you?
It just sounds like typical parental behavior trying to motivate you. Sometimes they don't realize how intense they seem.
i remember when i passed a science test that i found really tough, scoring higher than i'd ever managed before. i ran home hoping for a "well done," but got hit with, "why couldn't you do this in all your subjects?" it sucked the joy right out of my achievement. sometimes it seems like no amount of effort is enough for some parents, huh?? maybe the pressure they faced growing up affects how they expect things to be now!!!
damn, reading this makes me feel like i'm looking in a mirror. i can't help but think maybe there's more going on here; like your mom's got her own stuff she's projecting onto you? idk, parents want what they think is best, but they sometimes get it twisted and forget you're just doing your best too. 😅 sure, it's frustrating when every accomplishment feels overshadowed by criticism. but hey, maybe try talking to her straight up about how the constant pressure's messing with your vibe! might be worth a shot if you haven't already.
dude, it's like our parents have this built-in "never satisfied" button; maybe they think pushing us hard will make us better or something, but it can really get overwhelming when every effort feels overlooked.
I know, right? It feels like no matter how hard I try, there's always something wrong. Maybe they do think it's for our own good, but sometimes it's just too much pressure. I'm not sure how to handle it when all I want is some appreciation.
hmm dunno bout tht; maybe ur tellin smthng wrong
i totally get how frustrating it must be to have that constant pressure; i mean, it's like you're under a never-ending microscope of scrutiny!
Yeah, exactly. It's like she's always looking for the one thing that's wrong instead of what's right. It just never ends.
I get your frustration but have you tried talking openly with her about how this makes you feel? Sometimes direct communication can clear misunderstandings. What do you think could happen if you sat down and had an honest conversation together?
"Children learn what they live" has stayed with me too...open talks sound promising!
This kind of dynamic isn't uncommon among parents who grew up under strict conditions themselves. My dad was similar until we worked through setting healthy boundaries together and established mutual respect over time through conversations.
'Children learn what they live' resonates deeply with many; My own mother dealt with criticism growing up so naturally she passed that expectation onto me unintentionally before realizing its impact during discussions about generational behavior trends at therapy sessions.
Have you considered the possibility that her constant criticism might be her way of trying to prepare you for the real world, albeit in a misguided manner? While it's easy to blame upbringing or stress, could it be that she's simply unaware of how her words impact you? Maybe there's a way to gently point this out to her without causing a confrontation. It's common for parents to underestimate the emotional toll their comments take on us; communication gaps like these can indeed create unnecessary friction. Have you thought about seeking support from someone else in your circle who can help mediate or provide perspective on addressing this with her?
why does she criticize yr frends tho? i mean if they're gd ppl no harm right??? have u asked wht exactry bugs her abt em?
ah i kno wt u mean bt hve u considered how u define 'perfection'? sometimes parnts push bcuz dey see more potential.
I'm really curious if she ever expressed appreciation outside academics? Does she support other forms of achievements or is it solely academic-focused critique overall?
