I can't connect with people

The story

Moving to a new city was supposed to be a fresh start, a grand adventure filled with new people and opportunities. I mean, who doesn't dream of living in a bustling metropolis where you can reinvent yourself? Yet, here I am months later feeling more isolated than ever, despite having tried everything under the sun to forge connections.

I took the plunge for this brilliant job opportunity that seemed like a godsend: it was practically screaming 'grab me now or regret forever!' Packed my bags and left all the familiar faces behind. It felt like one of those rom-com scenes where the protagonist jumps into unknown waters without a life jacket but with lots of hope. However, reality turned out to be no Hollywood blockbuster.

First thing on my agenda was signing up for activities: yoga classes, book clubs, even pottery workshops! I threw myself into these groups with genuine enthusiasm thinking they'd be my saving grace (spoiler alert: they weren't). My experiences ranged from mildly interesting to downright bizarre. One knitting club spent two hours debating whether cats or dogs are better companions; as someone who's allergic to both, I found myself questioning why I was there at all.

Conversations have become like reruns on television: same lines but played by different faces. Small talk about weather slides uncomfortably into awkward silences faster than you can say 'awkward turtle.' It's like trying to build a sandcastle only for it to crumble before your eyes every single time. Maybe something's wrong with me...like perhaps I'm coded incorrectly for social interaction?

"Persistence is key," they say as if perseverance alone can summon lifelong friendships out of thin air. But after countless failed attempts at connecting past surface-level dialogues...well let's just say it's easy enough telling people "oh yeah things are great here" while secretly longing for any real sense of camaraderie... or even somebody half-listening when venting seems apt.
