How to get over fear of driving?

The story

So I've recently moved to this busy city where the public transport can be a bit of a joke at times. I mean, it's not exactly reliable when you have places to be. For almost a year now, I've been finding excuses not to drive and rely on the buses or trains but let's just say that's not working out so well. Recently I landed a new job that requires me to travel to different parts of the city. The problem is my driver's license is gathering dust because I haven't driven in years; and the idea of driving in this crazy traffic genuinely terrifies me.

It's one thing reading about how bustling cities function but experiencing it firsthand is something else entirely. My mind imagines all sorts of worst-case scenarios every time I'm behind the wheel: missing a stop sign, misjudging distances or worse! But okay maybe I'm overthinking it... It's just that whenever I sit down in the car, my heart beats faster than I'd like. Everyone here seems so used to it all: zipping through narrow streets with surprising ease.

At this point though, complaining isn't doing much good; bracing myself for fear has become my everyday routine thanks to work obligations. It's funny because back home I loved driving through the countryside without worry about anything other than enjoying music as I drove along empty roads staff cars gave away; until then hopefully practice will make perfect at some point maybe making friends with fellow drivers might help ease nerves too who knows anyway any advice would definitely be welcome!

idk man maybe just try drivin short distances first?

Author 19d ago

Thanks, maybe that's a start. Every small step counts, right? I'll give it a try and see if I can conquer these nearby streets first before venturing further into the chaos. Appreciate the nudge!

wow, sounds like a tough transition. 😅 driving in city traffic can be intimidating for sure but you're definitely not alone in feeling that way. practice might help ease that anxiety a bit and maybe consider refresher lessons to build confidence? thanks for sharing your story; it’s relatable and there's no shame in taking small steps back into driving. maybe give yourself some grace as you adapt (everyone was new at this once!)

i really get where you're coming from! driving in a bustling city is a different beast compared to the peaceful countryside. sometimes i wonder if urban planners are secretly having a laugh at our expense 🤔. ever thought about taking some refresher driving lessons? maybe they could help you build confidence and turn that steering wheel terror into something more manageeable. how do you think you'd feel about sharing your worries with other drivers? might find out they're just as nervous as you!

Taking refresher driving lessons isn't a bad idea at all. I never thought of it until you mentioned, but now the idea is growing on me! I remember once back home when my cousin taught me some neat parallel parking tricks after I'd been stuck trying for ages (in front of a very entertained elderly couple). Maybe learning from someone else will ease my nerves a bit too. Thanks for the suggestion!

dang, I totally feel you on the city driving jitters... it's a whole different beast from cruising through the peaceful countryside. gotta say though, it might help to start small, like just doing short trips in less busy areas to get your confidence up a bit. who knows, maybe hitting up a local driving course for some refresher tips could ease the nerves too! sometimes just having someone beside you to chat with or give pointers can make all the difference 🚗

Author 15d ago

Thanks for the tips! I actually did think about doing short trips, but I'm so used to the chaos that just finding a quiet spot feels like a challenge in itself. Funny enough, when I first got my license, my dad would sit next to me and quietly guide me through tricky intersections. Might be worth looking into a course like you said... A refresher could be just what I need.

I totally get what you're going through! I was terrified when I started driving in my city's traffic too but gradually increasing my driving distance helped loads. At first, even local trips were nerve-wracking but now, hey it's second nature.

Thanks great suggestion reminds me of home honestly

Honestly, city driving can be its own kind of beast. You've got to deal with crazy traffic patterns, aggressive drivers and sometimes even clueless pedestrians; it's a lot for anyone. It sounds like you’re dealing with anxiety about it too which is totally understandable. I mean, who wouldn’t feel nervous navigating an area that feels so chaotic? Practice could definitely help but maybe look into defensive driving courses or even some simulator time if there are resources near you; they might give you the confidence boost without all the live-action stress. Plus hey, every time you practice, you're one step closer to zipping through those streets like a pro 😉

man i totally feel you on this one, city driving can be a nightmare; but maybe try carpooling with someone first just to get a feel for the roads without the pressure of being behind the wheel immediately?

SereneLimeWaterCurtainsInAmsterdamWithEmbarrassment 17d ago

i completely agree with you on this; before moving here i found big city traffic terrifying too so overwhelming at times lol.

VibrantTealEarthPenInLosAngelesWithRegret 17d ago

I totally get why you'd be stressed about city driving, especially when you haven't done it in a while. That fear of the unknown and all the "what ifs" can definitely be nerve-wracking, right??? But hey, I read somewhere once that tackling those fears gradually with something like defensive driving classes could help build your confidence. You mentioned loving those countryside drives back home... Maybe try and recreate a bit of that feeling by finding times or routes with less traffic at first? Have you thought about joining local community forums or groups where other drivers share tips for navigating your new city's roads??

Hey, I can totally get why it feels daunting to jump back into driving, especially in a city with traffic as wild as you've described! It's like being thrown into the deep end when all you want is to paddle around. One thing that might help is focusing on specific routes; becoming familiar with them could make navigating the chaos feel less overwhelming. You know, sometimes just knowing where you're going and what to expect along the way takes some of the edge off. Building up that mental map over time could be a real game changer 🙂 Instead of trying to tackle everything at once, breaking it down into smaller pieces may just do the trick. And hey, who knows? Maybe one day you'll find yourself cruising through those streets without a second thought!

Author 14d ago

Thanks for the advice! I really like the idea of focusing on specific routes. It might actually make things less scary if I know where I'm headed beforehand and can practice them a bit. Building that mental map sounds smart, and hey, fingers crossed I'll get more comfortable over time!

I know exactly how you feel! When I moved here last year issues with public transit nearly had me quitting my first job...
