Here's to you
The story
toasting can be more than just clanging glasses together at a celebration, you know? there's an art and a habit to it that goes unnoticed, which I've recently come to realize. you see, I used to toast for all the occasions you'd expect (like birthdays, weddings, promotions) and everything in between. it was always light-hearted and jovial... until one day it wasn't so light anymore.
there I was at a networking event raising my glass with colleagues when all of a sudden, we were joined by him: a person who'd walked into my life like an unforeseen gust of wind, bringing unpredictability I'd neither invited nor anticipated. his words were charismatic yet sharp (whereas mine felt rehearsed) and suddenly the toasts were underlined by layers of tension. no longer were our customary congratulations or acknowledgments free from perplexing undertones; instead they teetered on sincere well-wishes mingled with restrained animosity we've danced around. yes he pushed me out of my comfort zone toward unforeseen potential and understanding (and for that I could indeed be thankful) but admiration shaded by vexation revealed complexity wherein even my confidence seemed misappropriated speech caught in stasis.
