Why is everyone so mean?
The story
is it me, or has everyone suddenly just become so darn mean lately? 🤔 i've noticed this shift over the past few weeks. people around me seem more short-tempered and irritable than ever before. from my morning commute to grabbing groceries, it's like everyone's a ticking time bomb ready to explode. i had a small interaction with a cashier yesterday, just asking for change, and got snapped at like i'd asked for their life's savings. i used to think maybe it was just one bad day for someone here or there, but it's consistent now.
there was an incident last week that triggered this realization. while waiting for the bus, somebody shoved past me rudely when all they needed to do was say 'excuse me.' 😒i felt myself getting defensive and angry instead of being understanding as usual. what's even stranger is i've found myself becoming shorter with others too... especially in conversations at work where patience used to be my strong suit. i'm beginning to wonder if something's changed collectively. is it something subtle in our environment or perhaps an underlying shift in how we're adapting to recent events?
it scares me a bit because society should ideally be moving towards mutual respect and empathy... yet here we are heading down what feels like the opposite path😕 personally, i try hard not to react negatively in stressful situations but find that effort growing each day given the negativity encountered nearly everywhere... maybe it's all about starting small changes individually but sometimes that seems daunting when every step forward faces such blatant hostility.
