The story

last Tuesday at 7:20, i was checking in for a routine shoulder scan when the hospital receptionist pushed a clipboard toward me through the slot in the glass. the emergency contact box was blank, and she tapped it with her pen while waiting for me to fill it in. when she asked who i wanted listed, i stared at the box for a moment, not because i was considering my ex, but because their name had not appeared in my head at all. that was the exact moment i realized i had moved on, which felt weirdly efficient for something i had spent so much time being miserable about.

i wrote my brother's name and phone number, even though he sends unknown calls straight to voicemail and regularly forgets that his mailbox is full. the receptionist glanced at what i had written and said, "you can change it later if you need to," in the same calm voice she had used to ask about my insurance card. i almost laughed because changing it later was precisely what had taken me so long to do, at least mentally. my brother is not an especially reassuring emergency contact, but choosing his name was deliberate, immediate, and completely unrelated to my ex;

the complication is that my ex messaged me six weeks earlier while i was standing at my sink, scraping dried coffee from a mug. the message said, "i still have you listed as my emergency contact, just so you know," which was an oddly administrative way to drop something that heavy into my evening. my ex had kept me there through the breakup, the awkward exchange of belongings, and the period when neither of us could say anything without making it worse. i read the message repeatedly because i did not expect to recieve evidence that they still pictured me as the person a hospital should call.

i answered with, "thanks for telling me," because every warmer response sounded misleading and every colder response sounded cruel. their message showed as read, and nothing else came after it, but the guilt has been hanging around anyway. keeping my number there is their decision, yet it makes my relief at the reception desk feel almost indecent, like i quietly resigned from a job they still think i have. i also still have an old voicemail from them asking me to bring home oat milk, which probably undermines my claim to being emotionally organized, but i have never confused that recording with an actual obligation to show up at their bedside.

by the time the receptionist handed back my insurance card in a blue folder, i felt lighter and then immediately felt pretty lousy for feeling lighter. the clean administrative switch from my ex to my brother exposed a difference between us that i did not ask to see. i do not plan to tell my ex that their name never crossed my mind, because that would be unnecessarily harsh, but am i supposed to mention that they should choose somebody else?? should i accept that i moved on, even while they still have me listed, or does my relief make me colder than i think??
