The story

so like, me and the fam have been in this constant loop. every holiday or family gathering, my mother-in-law just goes at it. she criticizes everything... the way i cook, how i decorate, her grandkids' clothes - you name it she's got something to say. seriously feels like nothing ever pleases her and i'm just so done. but of course i'm always polite and smiling through gritted teeth cuz no one wants extra drama at these things right? it's reached a point where i'm dreading every single invite in advance.

last time we're all seated at dinner, trying to have a nice evening, and bam! she starts questioning how i raise my kids right in front of everyone else. like literally there was no chill and everyone just sat awkwardly around the table not knowing what to say! felt super trapped like my voice didn't even matter in our own home, ya know? i'm so frustrated with these passive-aggressive digs that cut deep every time. don't want tension or beef but if she keeps undermining me man idk anymore. what's the line between keeping peace and sticking up for myself? feeling lost here.

Why do you have to be the only one responsible for keeping the peace? I'm not saying take it outside with this lady but she's not worried about the peace, so you can stand up for yourself. You can correct her, or shut conversations down entirely and refuse to discuss certain things with her. You should probably also talk to your spouse about this. That's their mom, so I'm sure they're used to it and may be less willing than you to change anything, but will you go on the rest of your long life dreading her?

Author 20d ago

Yeah, totally! It feels like I'm carrying this burden alone, you know? My spouse does know how she can be but it's hard getting them to see how deep it cuts me. Maybe I need to be clearer about my limits and her comments.

man, i get the frustration but sometimes you gotta think about it from her angle too. might not be that she's trying to be mean on purpose; maybe she just doesn't know how to let go of control or feels insecure in some way. i remember my grandma was kinda like this, always nagging about stuff. once we had a real convo, and it turned out she felt left out and didn't know how to express it right. anyway, worth considering giving her space to explain herself...could change the vibe at those gatherings without blowing up the peace ';'

i hear you, but it feels like every time i try to have a conversation, it doesn't get through. maybe she does feel insecure or left out, but her way of dealing with it is just so hurtful. i'm open to trying, but my patience is getting thin.

Sounds kinda petty.

Author 20d ago

it's kinda hard to say i'm being petty when every holiday she points out something as trivial as the way i fold napkins. once, she even counted how many times i stirred the soup before declaring it "overdone". it's just this constant barrage, ya know?

TranquilKhakiWaterHomunculusInHammeMilleWithAnger 19d ago

I get your frustration but maybe she's trying to help.

Author 19d ago

i get that she might mean well sometimes, but it's just exhausting when every little thing gets criticized. feels more like constant judgment than help.

Man, I get you, dealing with a mother-in-law like that is like a never-ending cycle of stress. Why do some people feel the need to turn family gatherings into their personal critique forum? It's baffling. There's definitely a line between keeping the peace and asserting yourself; just not sure where it is in this crazy dynamic...😤 Your home should be your domain though, no one should make you feel cornered there; maybe it's worth having a direct convo with her outside these gatherings without the audience. If she can't chill, perhaps it's time to let her know those criticisms are off-limits on your turf.

BizarreBrickIcePowerStripInDublinWithEnvy 19d ago

sounds like a tough cycle!!! have you considered setting boundaries before these gatherings? maybe talk to your partner about it. if she's always critical, why not ask her directly what she'd prefer when she starts up? is her opinion genuinely important or is it more noise? tough choice between peace and self-respect but maybe finding clarity there helps;

Man, that sounds like a really rough situation. Reminds me of when I had similar issues with my own in-laws. My wife's dad would always comment on how I dressed for family dinners and events. It was wild how something as simple as wearing jeans instead of slacks could stir up drama. At first, I'd just nod along awkwardly, but slowly I started joking back or brushing it off lightly by saying things like "I'm saving the suit for your birthday". Over time, people either got used to it or stopped bothering me about it entirely when they saw I wasn't letting it get under my skin too much 😜. Maybe finding lighthearted ways to respond might take the edge off? Just an idea! Keeping some humor in there could help ease tension without getting into confrontations.

totally feel you my mom does this too n its stressin

BlazingMagentaFireBroomInSeoulWithLoneliness 18d ago

sounds tough dealing with all that at family gatherings. it might help to set boundaries ahead of time with your spouse so they're clear on what you're not willing to accept anymore. maybe approach the situation differently: when she starts her critique marathon, you could use humor or redirect the convo to something light and unrelated. essentially, defuse without getting confrontational while making sure your spouse knows it's a serious issue for you. maintaining peace doesn't mean dismissing your own feelings, but finding clever ways around the tension could ease interactions for everyone involved, including yourself.

Man, that sounds like a total nightmare to deal with every time. Maybe next time you can try setting some boundaries before things start getting awkward. Like, let her know gently but firmly what's off-limits for discussion. Trust me, the silent treatment from standing your ground is way better than letting all these little comments eat away at you. Plus, if you make it clear beforehand and she still pushes those buttons, at least you've got the moral high ground when you decide enough's enough!

It's quite unsettling how family dynamics can become such a pressure cooker of tension and criticism..

WhisperingPeachEarthFlashlightInQuitoWithContentment 17d ago

have you tried chatting with her bout it? sometimes they don't realize they're overstepping.

Author 17d ago

...guess I should try talking again.

DreamingMidnightBlueWoodDactylionInEdinburghWithJealousy 16d ago

your story's familiar tho a bit dramatic maybe... try ignoring her criticism?

EffervescentBrownIceAntennaInShenzhenWithEmpathy 16d ago

Honestly, I feel for you, but maybe it’s time to be real with your spouse about how draining this is. If every gathering leaves you stressed and it's not getting any better, they gotta step up too. Maybe have a tag-team approach where they can deflect some of that criticism or back you up when things get ridiculous? It really sucks when the one person who's supposed to have your back is more like a spectator than a teammate; I've been there too. 😒

JubilantCharcoalAirCameraInSantiagoWithSadness 15d ago

I see why you're upset, but perhaps addressing it calmly could change things.

JazzyLimeIceRugInMiamiWithAnticipation 14d ago

I understand your anger though staying calm might defuse these situations better.

Author 14d ago

...guess calming down can't hurt.
