Things to read to fall asleep?
The story
Lately I've been having such a hard time drifting off to sleep, it's actually getting kind of ridiculous. I mean, you wouldn't believe the lengths I've gone just trying to catch some Z's. There was this one night, I remember lying there staring at the ceiling for what felt like an eternity and then it hit me: maybe I need something different to read before bed. You know how people say 'don't bring your phone or laptop into bed'? Yeah well, tell that to my restless mind.
I started thinking about all those folks who swear by their calming bedtime reads. But everytime I tried picking up a book, my eyes would just dart all over the place and I'd end up on page one hundred without a clue in the world what happened in between. Someone suggested fiction books because they transport you elsewhere but then there's me, getting all tangled up in thrilling plots and staying awake till dawn.
Then there's non-fiction; someone said it should do the trick because supposedly it can be dry enough to lull anybody to slumber; guess I'm not just anybody though. Sometimes instead of going down with them biochemical pathways or whatever they're called, I'd get hooked on some weird factoid and next thing you know I'm deep diving into Wikipedia at 3am...so much for that idea helping out....
The other week my friend told me about listening to audiobooks as they drifted off. Tried that too! Unfortunately half the time I either found myself rewinding endlessly because my brain loves wandering around or startling awake when something dramatic happens in them narratives. It's frustrating but keeps happening!
What can I do/read???

yea i feel u same here struggling wit sleep..urgh smtimes no matter wht i try its like chasing light kinda scares me acually
Finding the right bedtime routine can be such a struggle! I remember trying all things under the sun, from ASMR videos to classical music. One time, after my third unsuccessful attempt at reading "War and Peace" (trying to snooze), I somehow discovered that nature sounds did the trick for me. You know, like crickets chirping or rain falling. It finally got me calm enough to slip into dreamland without getting sidetracked by dramatic plots or cool facts; maybe it's worth a shot? 🌧️
Dude, I totally get your struggle with trying to find that sweet spot for sleep, it's kind of insane how elusive rest can be though!
have you thought about trying some light meditation exercises before bed?
Drinking tea helps me a lot
Thanks for sharing! What kind of tea helps you relax?
Honestly, I wonder if you've ever tried meditation or breathing exercises before bed?
Man, sleep struggles are the worst!!! But honestly, you might be overthinking it a bit? Not everything works for everyone, ya know; sometimes it's just about finding what clicks with your own crazy brain. Maybe ditch the books and audiobooks for a bit??? Try something totally different like meditation or some yoga stretches before bed. I know it sounds cheesy but my cousin swore by this breathing technique called 4-7-8 that helped them conk out faster than they'd ever imagined. Might be worth checking out instead of wrestling with pages or rewinds all night!
honestly tho if you're looking for something boring to fall asleep try reading tax law textbooks haha kidding (but not really) seriously though i think trying different things makes sense cause everyone has unique triggers for rest
That's hilarious! Might give tax law a shot myself.
sounds like you've tried just about everything under the sun to catch some sleep. i can relate; been there too, tossing and turning all night. have you tried white noise machines? they might drown out that overly active brain of yours by creating a constant background sound. some swear by breathing techniques like the 4-7-8 method, where you inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, and exhale for 8. a bit weird at first but could be worth it if your brain's playing tag with wikipedia at ungodly hours; give it a shot! 🤷♂️
Maybe it's time to explore some ambient sound apps or playlists. They often have curated sets that aren't just nature sounds but also white noise or even gentle pink noise designed for relaxation; these might offer a different kind of consistency that audiobooks and thrilling novels don't provide. Another angle could be examining your sleep environment: sometimes even adjusting the lighting in your room can create the right atmosphere for winding down, so perhaps a dimmer setup might help your brain start signaling it's bedtime. You might also consider setting up a fixed bedtime routine with some simple stretching, which won't provoke thought spirals like books or podcasts tend to do. It could serve as an anchor point before hopping into bed, helping your body distinguish day from night and potentially easing you into sleep more naturally.
Have you considered meditation?
just read the bible dude, it will be quick
wow, your brain really loves a good nighttime adventure, huh? 😂 it's kinda impressive how it manages to stay so active with all those thrilling plots and factoids. have you ever tried crafting a bedtime playlist filled with calming music or sounds from nature? sometimes just the right background sound can set the scene for dreamland... my buddy swears by it! plus, maybe look into incense or essential oils like lavender which are said to be pretty chill—worth a go if everything else is driving you nuts; i mean, worst case scenario they smell nice!
It's interesting because sometimes we forget how powerful our routines can be when shaping our sleep cycles. Personally, I've had luck by consistently going through calming bedtime rituals even when it feels silly initially. In those moments where peacefulness seems elusive while lying under cozy blankets there's solace within keeping faith that maybe tomorrow's reset might finally usher restful hours.
Absolutely relate! Building habits is key.
sounds like a classic case of analysis paralysis with all those options buzzing around. maybe instead of piling on more tactics, step back and simplify? try something small – like focusing on one sound or thought when you lie down; it could help quiet the mind a bit. also, consider what scents are in your room. some lavender oil does wonders for relaxation, so a few drops on your pillow might just be the ticket; worth a shot rather than adding even more stimulation to the mix 😴
i once tried reading poetry before bed instead of novels weird right surprisingly soothing though it doesn't work every time just thought i'd share
reminds me of this time i spent weeks trying to find the perfect pre-sleep routine. i even gave up coffee, switched to decaf, and you'd think that might help right? nah, still nothing. then one random night, couldn't sleep just like you...so i went outside and walked around the block a couple times in pajamas (yeah not my proudest moment). honestly it helped to clear my head a bit! might sound odd but maybe giving yourself a small walk or some light exercise before bed could chill your restlessness. worth a shot if books and audiobooks aren't cutting it!
've tried tht but isnt ez
Man, I get you. It's like your brain decides it's party time every night you try to sleep, huh? 😂 Ever thought about tuning into those guided meditations? You'd be surprised; sometimes a dude telling you to "breathe in deeply" actually does wonders. If the idea of someone practically whispering in your ear isn't too annoying, it might help calm the mind ✨ Just don't pick anyone with a voice that gets on your nerves!
