The story

so here's the deal: my kiddo just failed this year at school and we're trying to figure out how to get him motivated over the holidays. he's got ADHD, so focusing can be a real challenge for him. sometimes it feels like keeping his attention on one thing is like trying to hold water in your hands. i've been doing some research online, reading articles from places like Additude magazine, and they all seem to have similar advice but it's kinda confusing what actually works? you know, set goals that are achievable and provide structure (the kinda stuff that's easier said than done).

anyways, we're thinking of trying something new this summer... maybe something more hands-on or engaging, you know? i recently stumbled upon rock climbing as a possible activity. according to some parents in an ADHD support group i joined on facebook 🎯 it can really help with focus and discipline while still being a blast for kids who need to burn off energy. plus, he might just make some friends there who relate to his situation. would love any advice or stories you folks might have.

I totally agree! My niece tried painting classes and now she's way more focused!!

It's cool you're looking into new activities for your kid, but I'm a bit skeptical about rock climbing being a magic solution. 🤔 I've got an ADHD cousin, and while activities that burn energy are great, they might not always translate to school motivation or focus. Have you thought about mixing it up with something creative alongside the physical stuff? Maybe art classes or interactive workshops where he can channel his creativity and learn at the same time... Just a thought since every kid's different and sometimes a mix works best!

Honestly, rock climbing sounds like a solid move! It's kinda perfect for an ADHD kid who needs to burn off energy and focus at the same time; plus, it's not your typical "sit down and pay attention" kind of activity. My cousin's kid has ADHD too, and they found martial arts super helpful because it combines physical activity with learning structure; maybe that's another option if climbing doesn't work out. Either way, good luck finding something that clicks! 🌟

definitely can relate to the struggle with keeping focus 😂. my kid ain't in the same boat exactly, but i found doing activities as a family helped. we tried geocaching and it was a hit! kind of like hiking with a treasure hunt twist plus it's cheap!!!! maybe give that a shot too? keeps 'em engaged and moving 🤷‍♂️. rock climbing sounds killer though!! good luck!!

Sounds like you're in a bit of a tough spot, but have you considered that structuring every minute might just make him feel overwhelmed?

Sometimes it takes several tries. Be patient!

that's interesting 🤔 could you share what did work for him?

Honestly, giving something like rock climbing a try definitely sounds like it's worth it. Sometimes the key is to find that sweet spot where he doesn't even realize he's focusing because he's having so much fun, ya know? But also consider trying some activities that require teamwork. Sports or group projects can help him build social skills and keep his brain engaged in different ways. Keep experimenting until you hit on the right mix of fun and learning! 🤘

maybe try incorporating some outdoor activities that involve teamwork like paintball or capture the flag?

rock climbing could be cool and all, but i seriously doubt it'll magically fix his motivation issues at school. the hands-on stuff might help with focus, sure, but school? totally different ballgame. those ADHD tricks everyone talks about are hit-or-miss anyway; maybe try some basic daily habits first like regular sleep patterns or screen time limits??? i'm no expert but sometimes simple routine changes can have a surprising impact;

my neighbor's kid has adhd and they found that doing projects together really helped him. like, they'd build things from kits, do science experiments, or even cook meals together. it's hands-on but also gives them a sense of accomplishment when they finish something. maybe integrating tasks like these could work over the holidays too? plus, it might slowly foster more focus while still feeling like play.

i've got a nephew with adhd who struggled much like your son in school last year. when summer came around, his mom enrolled him in dance lessons as a fun experiment.. at first, no one was sure if it would work but turns out he loved it so much! within weeks he was learning dance routines and seemed more focused than ever before (it was amazing honestly). it's important these kids find something they genuinely enjoy!

QuirkyForestGreenLightningQuintessenceInCapeTownWithDisappointment 15d ago

Dance made a difference? Wow, never thought of that.

thanks for sharing! dance sounds cool too maybe he'll give that a shot.

Man, I totally get where you're coming from with the ADHD struggles! It sometimes feels like you're juggling a million things at once, right? One thing that worked for us was involving our kid in cooking; yeah, sounds weird but hear me out. It's hands-on and kinda forces them to focus and follow steps without realizing it's structured learning. Plus, they get to eat something tasty at the end which is always a win! You might wanna give it a shot alongside rock climbing or maybe even find cooking classes specifically for kids like him. Keeps 'em busy and teaches patience all while having fun!!!
