He texts me every day
The story
So I've recently started this new gig in a marketing firm. Everything's pretty chill at the workplace, and while I'm thrilled with the responsibilities, there's this slightly awkward situation looming over me. There's a guy on my team, a coworker named Jake, who without an exaggeration has been texting me every single day since I joined. Now, don't get me wrong: I appreciate that he's trying to be friendly, but we're not talking about work-related stuff. It's all these trivial topics like what he cooked for dinner or if I've seen the latest superhero movie. Honestly, it's getting to the point where his texts just feel obtrusive. Maybe I sound harsh? But put yourself in my shoes: imagine coming home from work expecting some quiet time only to have your phone buzz continuously for things that could absolutely wait.
A part of me wonders if this is meant to be some sort of "welcome into the fold" tradition that I'm unaware of… like a twisted version of hazing where newbies get spammed with pleasantries until they break and join the circus voluntarily. But even though I want to believe it's innocent chitchat gone too far, it's hard not to see it as inconsiderate. After all, outside working hours should be mine completely unperturbed unless urgent or necessary for business continuity. Here's a nugget from my past: back in college during group projects we used WhatsApp efficiently keeping our messages as concise and purposeful as possible knowing time was limited especially close to exams. So why can't professionals employ similar etiquette when we're supposed adults? Another thing that bugs me (and yes maybe unfairly so) is wondering whether Jake does this solely because I'm new or perhaps worse if I'm female... How do you tell someone their daily little check-ins feel more like micromanagement than kindness without blowing everything up unnecessarily? Anyone else out there bumped into similar scenarios before?
