i am not nice
The story
Today at lunch, something unexpected happened. I was just about to grab a sandwich when I overheard a group of my coworkers chatting nearby. At first, it was the usual stuff (workload pressure, upcoming deadlines...) but then they got onto the topic of 'who's nice and who's not.' What caught me off guard was hearing my own name thrown into the mix. One of them said something like, 'Oh yeah, she's always so serious... not really that nice.' It felt like a punch in the gut.
Now, I've always considered myself professional. I mean, we're at work to get things done, right? But their words made me wonder if I've been coming off as unfriendly without realizing it. My focus has always been on maintaining those clear professional boundaries. You know how it is with client interactions and all that jargon we have to deal with daily; I thought professionalism was key. But maybe I'm missing some soft skills or something like that.
I didn't think much about how my behavior might be misunderstood until today. It wasn't just one person: it was a few who seemed to agree with the comment. That realization has been bugging me since lunchtime, making me reconsider my interactions in the office. Am I too focused on tasks and outcomes? Could this affect my relationships here? It's weird because I've read somewhere that maintaining professional distance is crucial.
It's frustrating trying to reconcile being good at your job with being seen as personable or 'nice.' If anyone else has gone through this kind of thing before (balancing professionalism while still appearing approachable) I could really use some advice. Hearing what my coworkers think wasn't fun...but maybe it's an opportunity for growth.
