how to get over trust issues?
The story
So here I am, trying to figure out how to get over some serious trust issues with my partner 🤔. Ugh, this whole situation is such a mess! Like, snooping through someone's journal is a massive no-no, right?!!
Anyway, I found out last week that my partner went ahead and read through my personal stuff without even asking 😒. And now I'm left wondering... how can I ever trust them again? It feels like a betrayal that's hard to shake off. My thoughts are all over the place;
It's not just about one mistake! It's the principle of it: respect and trust. Both took a major hit with what happened 😞. How do you even begin to mend that kind of broken bond? Every time I'm around them, there's this huge invisible wall between us. I'm tired of pretending everything's fine!!!
I'm considering having an open conversation about boundaries and trust but honestly, will that be enough?? Words are easy... actions not so much! Maybe setting clear rules on privacy could help??? But can you really put rules on something that shouldn't need them in the first place? This doubt is eating me up inside!!!

omg, that sucks big time 😤 reminds me of when my old roommate went through my phone cuz she "thought I was hiding something" 🙄... can't believe people think that's okay. but yeah, boundaries are super important. rules might sound like a drag, but they're def necessary sometimes to rebuild trust. fingers crossed it works out for you! 🤞❤️
Thanks for your words ❤️ It really helps to know others have gone through similar things. You're right, boundaries can be tricky but so important. I'm hoping having that conversation will at least point us in the right direction!
hey so i get that this sucks big time but maybe it's not as bad as you're making it out to be??? yeah your partner messed up by reading your journal but at least they didn't lie about it right away when confronted.. misunderstandings happen in relationships n they gotta be fixed too!!! just make sure they know how important your privacy is!!!
I hear you, believe me! We did talk after I found out and acknowledged their mistake which was a start... still feels pretty shaky though!
Wow, that sounds incredibly frustrating. Trust really is the foundation of any relationship, and when it's compromised, it can feel like everything’s been flipped upside down. Have you thought about suggesting couples counseling? It might create a neutral space for both of you to express your feelings and rebuild trust more effectively.
i get where you're coming from... trust issues can be a beast to tackle. but, reckon it's worth having that chat about boundaries, even if it seems basic. sometimes, people don't realize the impact of their actions till you lay it out for 'em. setting sone ground rules might seem weird but hey, maybe it'll help you both understand each other better?? good luck with whatever path you choose!
Thanks for the support. Yeah, I guess setting boundaries could be a start. It's just so frustrating to have to explain something that should be common sense, you know? We'll see how it goes.
dude, i totally get being pissed about someone snooping in your stuff... that's such a line to cross!!! but listen, before you throw the whole relationship away, maybe think about why they did it? sometimes people act out of fear or insecurity and it leads them to do dumb things. there was this one time my buddy went through his girlfriend's messages because he thought she was hiding something but really he just had way too much anxiety from past relationships.
anyway, having that open convo is super important, seriously like "damn we need to set some rules here". i’m not saying it'll magically fix everything but laying it all out might help clear the air. remember: trust takes time to rebuild so be patient with yourself and them if they're genuinely sorry. good luck sorting through this mess!
dude, i totally get where you're coming from. trust is so fragile and once it's cracked, it feels almost impossible to glue back; i think opening a conversation about boundaries is a great start though, even if it feels awkward at first. sometimes people don't realize how their actions impact others until it's brought up in a real way! maybe you could explain why that privacy is important to you and how it made you feel?
i was in a similar spot once, and let me tell ya, talking about it helped more than stewing over it alone 🙌; communication can lead to understanding or at least help figure out if this is someone who’s willing to make amends. but you're right: actions matter way more than just lip service. things won't change overnight but taking that first step shows both sides whether there's really something worth building on again or not.
omg, that sucks so much!!! snooping is such a huge violation of trust... like, how did they think that was okay at all?!? totally get why you're feeling off. having clear convo about boundaries sounds smart but yeah, actions speak louder than words for sure. maybe some time apart to process might help too?? trust is hard to rebuild and it takes effort on both sides. sending you strength!!!
Guess what, if you can't trust them now, will some "sit-down talk" magically fix everything?
Woah, sounds like you’re going through a tough spot! I totally get why you’d feel betrayed over this. It’s honestly so frustrating when someone crosses that line, and like, trust is not something that magically rebuilds overnight. Ugh... but then again, having that open conversation might be the move to start from somewhere. The part that’s tricky is whether boundaries can truly fix things or if it’s just about giving it time and seeing if actions back up those words. Sometimes people need to realize the depth of their screw-up to actually change, ya know?
I remember when my friend went through something similar. Her partner read her emails without permission. It was a major blow to their relationship, and it took a lot of effort to get back on track; they started with establishing clear boundaries and had open conversations about privacy expectations. It's tough when trust is shattered like that, but maybe focusing on rebuilding step-by-step could help ease the tension instead of trying to fix everything all at once. Keeping an open dialogue and observing how your partner responds can offer insights into their willingness to change too.
tough spot :(
oh man, i'm sorry you're going through this! trust issues aren't exactly a walk in the park. 😂 i get why you'd feel that invisible wall because similar thing happened to me once. my brother thought it would be cool to "borrow" my saved games on our console and ended up erasing my progress instead... honestly hurt like hell for a bit but we sorted it out eventually through more than just words. maybe actions and consistent behavior changes from your partner could pave the way for rebuilding trust? you mentioned feeling shaky after you guys talked, so it might be worth keeping an open line of communication as things evolve. it's kinda like maintaining a piece of tech; regular updates keep everything running smooth! 🤓
Your feelings of betrayal are completely valid. Have you considered whether there were any reasons behind their actions (like maybe they're feeling insecure)? Not saying it's justified but communicating about why it happened might offer some perspective. Could discussing these points openly change anything for either of you?
That's a good point!
sounds like you're caught in a real trust dumpster fire there. i mean, it's one thing to screw up but going through your journal is next-level invasion of privacy. honestly, i can't blame you for feeling betrayed; who wouldn't be? have you ever thought about what might've driven them to do that though? not trying to excuse it, just wondering if there's some underlying issue or insecurity they need to address as well. maybe digging into the why could help untangle some of this mess before deciding if it's worth fixing or not? at the end of the day, only you can decide if this relationship still has any potential. good luck dealing with all this sh*t!
violations like this strip bare any semblance of mutual respect, reducing a relationship to a transaction devoid of sanctity and depth; expecting consistency in rebuilding such fractured trust often proves futile when initial actions reveal an utter disregard for personal boundaries.
It does feel like everything's been stripped away. I remember once when I accidentally found my partner's list of passwords (they left it on the desk) and instead of going through it, I immediately told them to keep it private. That's what mutual respect should be. It hurts knowing they didn't have the same instinct with my journal.
sounds like you're super upset (understandably!) but should partners have absolute privacy in every aspect though? idk maybe i'm playing devil's advocate here but if their intent wasn't malicious then perhaps giving them another chance isn't unreasonable?? putting restrictions might lead to more friction if both aren't on board.
You raise an interesting question. Can couples truly keep things hidden if they're committed?
