I cheated

The story

i cheated. it happened last month at a friend's party. i was a couple of drinks in and feeling a bit off that day. my partner, Sam, couldn't make it because of work, so i went alone. everything was going fine until this guy, Jake, started chatting with me. he was funny and charming, and i guess i got caught up in the moment. one thing led to another, and before i knew it, we were kissing in the backyard. it felt wrong but exciting at the same time. when it was over, i immediately felt this sinking feeling of regret. how could i let myself go there?

now i'm sitting here, riddled with guilt. Sam and i have been together for three years, and he's always been nothing but good to me. we even celebrated our anniversary on September 20th with a cozy dinner at our favorite restaurant. how could i do this to him? it's like a dark cloud hanging over my head, making me second-guess everything. every time he looks at me with those kind eyes, i just want to break down and confess everything. but then the fear kicks in: what if he never forgives me? what if this ruins everything we've built together? Sam once told me, "trust is the foundation of love," and now i feel like i've shattered that foundation.

i've been replaying that night over and over in my head, trying to figure out what went wrong. maybe it was the stress from work or the fact that our relationship has hit a bit of a rut lately. we used to go on dates every week, but now it's like all we do is work and sleep. it's like we're in a routine and forgot how to be spontaneous with each other. that night with Jake was an escape from reality, but now it's a nightmare i can't wake up from. i've noticed Sam getting more distant too, maybe he's sensing something is off. or am i just imagining things because of my own guilt?

i'm really stuck here, wondering if honesty is the best policy or if keeping this secret is better for both of us. sometimes i think, what's done is done, and stirring things up will only make it worse. other times, i feel like i'm lying to him every day by not being honest. would telling him relieve my guilt or just hurt him unnecessarily? should i tell Sam about what happened or keep it to myself and try to move on? am i overreacting or does honesty really matter this much? 🤔 should i just admit it: i cheated?

yes, tell Sam, because he deserves to decide what "trust is the foundation of love" means after you broke it! blaming drinks, work stress, or a boring routine is weak imo, since you still chose to kiss Jake. keeping quiet mainly protects you from consequences, not Sam from pain. say exactly what happened without making excuses, then let him choose what comes next 😕

I've been in a similar situation before, and I decided to come clean. It was tough, and my partner was hurt, but ultimately it brought us closer together. It's important to communicate and be honest if you want to rebuild trust. Take some time to think it through and try to understand what led you to this situation in the first place.

thanks for sharing your experience. it's comforting to hear that being honest worked for you, and i appreciate the advice. still really scared though... what if it doesn't work out the same way for us? i'm not sure if i'm ready for how tough that conversation will be.
