loving an alcoholic
The story
so i'm chilling at home, right? and then my phone buzzes. it's my partner's boss and i'm like, seriously? she asks if i can cover for him... again. really? apparently they called in sick but we both know that's code for drunk off their ass. you know, the kind of sozzled where words slur and shoes vanish into thin air. anyway, here i am torn between protecting his paycheck and confronting this ugly truth that's been staring us down for months now. honestly who's gonna put up with me lying through my teeth every time he pulls this stunt? honestly i want to cuss them out for all the late nights i've spent worrying if they're passed out in some ditch after a reckless bender.
and don't even get me started on our relationship taking hits below the belt more times than rocky balboa ever did. it's like dating dr jekyll and mr hyde; never sure which version walks through the door each night. sometimes i wonder if there's a hotline that specializes in significant others of boozehounds because god knows, i'll be their first platinum member after these nightmares. friends say love ain't blind but dude it's dumb as hell when you're tangled up with someone who can't even remember half the promises they make unless there's alcohol involved.
i've lost count of how many al-anon meetings i've thought about attending while sitting alone on saturday nights pretending everything's a-okay over instagram filters and oh-so-fake smiles. wish there was an award for best actor in the role of pretending life doesn't suck when your partner chooses liquor over love more often than not; i'd win every year hands down!
what bugs me is when people ask why stick around or why put up with this madness as if breaking up is like ordering a coffee. it feels way more complicated than that. heartstrings don’t just snap without leaving scars. it’s not like i can just walk away and pretend nothing happened. every day, i find myself wading through this sea of shattered dreams and painful memories. sometimes it feels like hope is a distant memory, buried under the weight of all this chaos. i wish it was as easy as it sounds. yeah, love can be beautiful, but when you’re left holding the pieces of someone else’s choices, it turns into something heavy and exhausting. i just keep waiting for the moment when everything shifts, for the chaos to calm down enough to find a way forward, but it feels like that moment is always just out of reach.

not ur job lol
Totally, it's not supposed to be my job. But somehow it ends up feeling like it is when I'm the one picking up the pieces every time. Just wish this wasn't the norm, ya know?
Sounds like you're stuck in a cycle that’s tough to break, and it's totally understandable that it feels overwhelming. But seriously, how many more of his mistakes are you going to cover for?? Feels like he needs some serious wake-up call!!! Just gotta protect your peace too... You can't keep being the safety net when he's busy making crappy choices!
why you puttin up wit so much junk all th e time maybe its fine ur choice man but r u ok wit it cuz sounds rough idk im askin honestly.
lol truth.
Man, that sounds like a seriously tough situation. It's wild how people think you can just hit the "quit" button on a relationship like it's some kinda game. It is exhausting to be in this constant mode of clean-up crew for someone who's off on their own destructive path. You're juggling everything and it feels like you're waiting for them to choose you over the bottle... yet here we are again. Keep looking out for yourself too; your own sanity has gotta come first sometimes!
thank you, it really does feel like i'm a full-time clean-up crew. sometimes i wonder if i’m losing myself in all this. but yeah, taking care of my sanity should matter too... easier said than done though, right?
Can't believe you'd stay.
can't believe resonates everywhere now.
Once my brother went through a similar phase and, honestly, it’s like living with a ticking time bomb; every day felt like walking on eggshells around him.
feels like you're stuck in a vicious cycle of being the bandaid for their mistakes. honestly, that's exhausting and no one should have to bear that stress. it's crazy how people assume breaking up is just a simple decision like choosing what to watch on netflix when it's really ripping up your emotional quilt. maybe consider setting some boundaries or having an honest conversation about this mess... might help clear the air and reduce at least some of the constant burden you’re carrying.
wow, your situation really sounds like a tough balancing act. 😕 i've been in a similar spot, kind of feeling like i'm stuck between being supportive and completely burnt out. sometimes i think about what it means to be an enabler without even realizing it; it's hard to draw the line when love is involved. ever thought about reaching out for professional help? not that it fixes everything immediately, but might provide some strategies for communication; wondering if they'd agree to couple's therapy or something? gotta say though, protecting your own mental health should be as important as everything else...
man, reading this just got me thinking about how messed up relationships can get when one person is dragging all the weight while the other keeps stumbling around clueless. you’re caught in a cycle where you're forced to play clean-up crew for someone else's chaos, and that's brutal. kinda makes you wonder how much longer you can keep faking those smiles on social media or if breaking free might be worth the initial sting, even with those scars. sometimes seems like staying together might do more damage than starting fresh does...
It's crazy how you're caught in this loop of enabling, even though you clearly see the damage it's causing. It's like being on call for a job you never signed up for, right? But sometimes love feels like that: a mess of sticking around hoping things will get better because leaving feels impossible. Have you thought about setting some solid boundaries? It might help to clear your mind and take back some control without feeling burdened by his choices all the time.
oh boy reminds me of my uni days when my roomie would do some crazy stuff whenever she'd get blasted at those fraternity parties didn't care about anything else then those mornings sucked big time bandaging together whatever drama unfolded prior blaming hangover cures avoiding consequences convenience having a reason well things got better after she saw therapist cleared head.
Ah, your roomie's journey sounds familiar. Therapy might be the key but part of me wonders if he'll ever reach that point. It's like fighting an internal battle between hope and frustration while waiting for a miracle switch to flip.
Oh my goodness, I've been there too! My best friend used to date someone just like this and I swear it turned her into a detective tracking down their every move. She was always worried about their next unexpected call or disappearance. It's such a difficult place to be, being torn between love and the reality of this constant chaos, ya know? 🤯 Like we all want to see the good in the people we care about but sometimes that vision is clouded by their choices and actions. Have you ever thought about maybe trying a sort of detachment technique where you're supportive from a distance? Just staying emotionally invested while protecting yourself at the same time can be crazy hard but might help keep some sanity!
Yeah, it's like turning into Sherlock Holmes with way less glamour. I've tried keeping some distance but it’s so hard not to fall back into that trap of hoping things will magically change. Detachment sounds good in theory but man, putting it into practice is another beast entirely!
You need to wake up.
