my bf doesn't know ph
The story
Okay, so here's the thing. I've been with my boyfriend for over a year now and you would think by this point we basically know each other inside out, right? Well, apparently not! Imagine my shock when I realized he is completely oblivious to something that's a huge part of my life. I mean, come on! For real, how does that even happen? It’s like living with someone who has selective hearing or some kind of hobby filter in his brain. We've shared breakfast together while I’ve been doodling away on my sketchpad or lathered in paint for hours and he's never bothered to ask why. I'm an artist, dammit! It's more than just a hobby - it's practically what defines me.
Now I’m sitting here wondering if there’s some sort of disconnect between us. Should I try introducing him to this side of me or just leave it be and hope one day he’ll magically notice the damn easel in the corner? Maybe he's afraid he won’t understand any of it or support it. Like, dude, all you had to do was notice once when I showed you that piece hanging above our bed (the one that took weeks by the way!) With everything being so positive otherwise - he makes me laugh like no other and totally gets my love for random Netflix shows - maybe I'm blown' this whole thing out of proportion 🤦♀️ but seriously what would you guys do? Throwin’ paintbrushes at him until it clicks, have a polite convo or just let it slide?

It's interesting how relationships can surprise us sometimes! Have you considered directly asking him if he even noticed your artwork around the house? Maybe there's a way to casually bring up your passion during a chill moment together.
That's actually a solid approach! I'll try slipping it into conversation next time.
lol whts the big dEal maybe he jst doesnt care bout art its not lik ur hiding smthing bad
It's not so much about hiding things, it's more feeling a bit invisible. It's just weird to live with someone and have them miss something so big about your life! You know?
wow, that's frustrating but kind of relatable in a weird way. it's fascinating how sometimes people can miss the most obvious things right under their noses! maybe he just needs a little nudge to realize how important art is to you. i've been in relationships where my partner didn't quite get what I was passionate about until i sat them down and explained it, like a personalized TED Talk lol 😅. on the other hand, if he's receptive when you share more openly about your art, he might start seeing that easel as an extension of who you are rather than just another piece of furniture cluttering up the room. communication could really make a big difference here without having to resort to paintbrush warfare!
Wow, that sounds frustrating! 😤 It's wild how people can miss things right under their noses, especially when it's something you're so passionate about. Maybe he's just genuinely clueless and needs a gentle nudge to open his eyes a bit; have you ever directly asked him what he thinks of your art? Sometimes people need more direct communication to really notice what's important to us.
My partner also took forever to realize my love for gardening until I literally put a plant on his desk 😂. So maybe starting with a lighthearted conversation where you share why your art matters so much could be the way to go. What do you think would happen if you just had an honest talk with him about it?
omg same thing happened with my bf! i knit constantly and somehow he never put two and two together until i told him straight up. we laughed it off but then he got really into trying to understand why i find knitting so relaxing :) maybe yours will too!
a disconnect like this can indeed feel frustrating, especially when your passion is such an important part of who you are. relationships often require communication beyond what's visible at first glance. have you considered directly inviting him to join you in an art session or explaining the meaning behind some of your work? engaging him with your artistic process might naturally open his eyes to this crucial aspect of your identity. could it be that he's not aware he should ask about what seems obvious to you? 🤔
That actually sounds like a great idea. Maybe I'll just show him how I work and what it means to me instead of waiting for him to notice. Honestly, he might not even know where to start asking questions about my art (he's great with Netflix though)! 😂
yo same happened w me once...my girlfriend didnt kno im into cars FOR A YEAR lol she doesnt understnd why i spend sundays working on them but guess whut now shes helpd me fix one last wknd 😂 shld just keep talkin bout it n hell get curious eventually
'Curiosity killed the cat' haha let's hope!
dude, i feel ya. once dated someone for like two years before they clocked that i was deeply into gaming. guess what clued them in? the literal stack of consoles and controllers in our living room! it’s wild how folks can totally blank out on stuff that's super important to us. maybe it's about giving him a lil push more than anything else. try taking him to an art gallery or even one of those fun paint-and-sip nights; see if that helps bridge the gap. who knows, he might even surprise you and find a hidden love for painting too! 🤞
Haha, wow, a stack of consoles should have been an obvious clue! 🤔 You're probably right: sometimes people need a little nudge. I'll try not to throw paintbrushes at him and maybe take him to a gallery or something like that instead. Thanks for the tip!
man, that sounds pretty rough. sometimes it feels like we're living with aliens who don't get our world at all 😀 i remember once when my gf didn’t realize i was into cooking ’til she caught me watching hours of food network lol... maybe try involving him in a small art project or have a little "art night." might help bridge the gap by making it interactive and chill! what do you think, could be interesting to see if he engages with some hands-on experience?
ever thought maybe it's not just him being clueless, but more about you two needing to sync up better on what matters?
i kinda agree with you but also it's possible he's seen it all along n just doesnt realize how important it is to u speak up and see how he responds
You could turn it into a friendly challenge or game, like asking him to guess which of the pieces around the house are yours and see where that convo leads; sometimes making it fun can break down those communication barriers without getting too heavy.
that reminds me of when i used to play guitar all the time n thought no one noticed lol turns out people just need things pointed out sometimes dont stress too much about his ignorance
i feel ya completely bc the first time i mentioned baking gluten free stuff my partner had no idea lol but once we talked about how much fun experimenting with recipes is they totally got into helping taste test new desserts
Have you tried dropping hints directly related to your art before approaching him outrightly? Sometimes subtlety works wonders as opposed to a full-on declaration.
Haha, I hear you. I've tried the hint thing before in other situations and it backfired hilariously. Like when I was hovering around the kitchen trying to subtly suggest he take out the trash; he ended up asking if I wanted to go bowling instead! Maybe dropping hints about my art will finally snap him out of his oblivion, but who knows?
