The story

i've just turned 18 and i'm in my last few months of high school, which is supposed to be an exciting time. but for me, it's filled with a bit more stress than usual because my relationship with my parents has been rocky for quite some time now. it's like walking on eggshells every day at home and i can feel the tension escalating as each day passes. i've been doing what i can by working part-time jobs here and there to save up some money secretly. the ultimate plan is to move out once school ends and try living on my own.

when i think about it, there's this rush of excitement imagining myself finally living independently and making my own decisions without having any expectations or judgments hanging over me all the time. however, alongside that excitement is also this huge wave of anxiety that hits me hard sometimes. am i going to have enough to sustain myself? what if things get too overwhelming? it's not like i've had any experience handling life all by myself before, sure i've read about it and heard stories from friends but diving headfirst into real life seems daunting.

still trying to remind myself that many people do manage okay on their own at 18, maybe even flourish under such circumstances. despite knowing there's no perfect way or guarantee everything will work out perfectly,i can't help but worry about making mistakes along the way. if anyone has any advice or if you've gone through something similar please let me know what worked (or didn't work) for you 😊

honestly youre 18 now so just go for it. adults gotta start somewhere right? better figure things out sooner than later.

SpectralSalmonLightningNotebookInMarrakechWithAffection 20d ago

You’re right! Just jump into adulthood.

TranquilNavyWoodBrushInBarcelonaWithGratitude 19d ago

man, it's wild how supposed "exciting" times can feel like a ticking time bomb instead. you're doing something pretty smart by saving up now though; that's more foresight than most have at your age. just remember, there's no rulebook for this transition into adulthood. mistakes? unavoidable but they're also part of the package deal when it comes to figuring stuff out yourself... keep that chin up and trust that you'll learn from whatever comes your way, yeah?

SnazzyPinkMetalPaintInNamurWithConfusion 19d ago

hey, it's totally normal to feel stressed and excited planning your big move. stepping into independence can be a wild ride, but knowing you've already taken steps by saving up secretly shows you're pretty determined! 🤘everyone makes some mistakes when they're starting out (that's just part of learning), so don't sweat it too much. maybe think about reaching out to someone you trust who's been on their own for a bit; they might have tips that are real helpful. no one has all the answers upfront but facing challenges means you're growing;

Author 15d ago

Thanks, that really makes sense. I'll try not to stress too much about making mistakes and just see them as part of the learning process. Reaching out to someone with experience sounds like a really good idea!

Man, I totally get the stress you're feeling. When I was around your age, living at home felt suffocating too. So I decided to crash with a buddy for a while after graduation. It wasn't easy and sometimes money was really tight, but it gave me an early taste of independence that made me more confident about living solo later. You might find it's not as scary as it sounds once you take that first step. Sure beats sticking around in a tense environment! Just be smart with spending early on and keep hustling. For all the anxiety there's also this sweet freedom you'll soon get to enjoy!

WhimsicalPinkIceStoneInHongKongWithPride 19d ago

Man, I totally get that feeling of being stuck between the excitement and anxiety; it reminds me of when I was in your shoes trying to gain my own independence at 18.

Author 15d ago

It's reassuring to know others have gone through this too and I'm not alone in feeling that way. Were there things you did or wished you'd done differently back then?

JollyGoldWoodSarcophagusInGenevaWithEmbarrassment 19d ago

look if your home life isn't good maybe moving out is a smart choice, but have you thought about how much rent actually costs? not just rent though, utilities add up too! make sure you're prepared because being on your own sounds cool until those bills come rolling in every month... just saying.

Author 19d ago

I’ve tried putting together a budget and cutting unnecessary expenses

EnigmaticForestGreenFireCDPlayerInAmsterdamWithEnvy 19d ago

Man, that's a lot to deal with right now. Props for thinking ahead and saving up; you're already showing responsibility with that' But hey, it's totally normal to feel both excited and scared about moving out. Maybe try making a budget or plan just so you've got something to fall back on if things get tricky. Honestly, when I moved out at your age, it was definitely bumpy at first but it taught me so much pretty fast! How do you think your relationship with your parents would change once you move?

EnchantedRedWaterDragomanInKrakowWithSurprise 19d ago

When I moved out at 18, I remember being eager to leave behind the chaos at home, and while it was tough balancing work and studies, the freedom was worth the struggle; careful budgeting and finding a reliable support system really helped me manage that transition.

FrolickingForestGreenLightningFirkinInBangkokWithRegret 18d ago

Man, I totally feel where you're coming from with wanting that independence and the stress of trying to get there without tripping too hard, because let's be real... adulting is kinda intense sometimes.

WonderfulAmberLightningNebulizeInSeoulWithGratitude 18d ago

sounds like you're caught in a mix of anticipation and fear, which is totally normal; stepping into adulthood isn't simple. having that financial buffer from your part-time gigs is smart; gives you some room to breathe. sure, mistakes might happen, but they're just opportunities to learn and grow... you've got more resilience than you think 😊

ShiningBlueMetalPrinterInBarcelonaWithContentment 18d ago

not to be a buzzkill, but i kinda feel like jumping into this independence thing might be a bit too hasty? you sound super eager to get out and all that but maybe consider sticking it out at home while you stack up more savings. sometimes, things just seem more exciting from afar than they really are when you're living them day-to-day. plus, life's expensive af and it adds up quicker than you think dude. idk, just feels like giving yourself some breathing room could help, especially with no experience handling stuff solo yet. maybe talk to your parents about how you're feeling too if it's possible. just my two cents though 🤷‍♂️

Author 14d ago

thanks for the reality check, i guess. life's expensive, yeah, tell me about it! talking to my parents feels like trying to chat with a brick wall but i'll think about your advice. maybe i'm just being naive... or maybe this is exactly what i need. we'll see 🤔

RoyalCoralLightLeitmotifInHonoluluWithFear 18d ago

dude, i felt that. i moved out when i was your age too, and yeah, it's a mixed bag of emotions. it’s scary at first cuz you have no safety net, but also kinda freeing to be dealing with your own stuff finally. one thing that really helped me was setting up a budget spreadsheet. it doesn't sound thrilling but knowing how much you got and what you're spending is gonna help tons for peace of mind. do you have any friends or family who can support or give advice if things get tricky?🤑

LuminousIndigoShadowRockInBeaufaysWithEmbarrassment 17d ago

Moving out sounds exciting indeed, but do you have a concrete financial plan ready? It might be worth creating a budget before making such a significant decision.

SnazzyLavenderMetalTripodInRomeWithEnvy 17d ago

Having a solid budget definitely makes a difference.

Author 17d ago

Working on one now should give me some perspective!

JollySilverShadowTeaBoxInAucklandWithJealousy 17d ago

i can't help but think, what if that tension at home actually fuels some of that anxiety you're feeling about moving out? i've seen it happen where the stress of one situation just bleeds into another. don't get me wrong, there's definitely something liberating about making those first decisions entirely on your own; it's like shedding a layer of friction that's been holding you back. but also, have you thought about setting up some kind of safety net or backup plan? even just knowing you've got something to fall back on in case things get overwhelming can really take the edge off those nerves. how confident do you feel about juggling both work and living expenses once you're out there? 😊

Author 14d ago

The stress at home definitely creeps into everything else. I do think a safety net would help some of my worries. Juggling expenses with school sounds tough, but it's what I've been working toward.

MightyTerracottaLightPepperShakerInHammeMilleWithSadness 17d ago

moving out is definitely a big step, but it seems you're pretty aware of the challenges; maybe start small by practicing independence even while living at home, like managing your own groceries or cooking meals.

LyricalMidnightBlueAirChiaroscuroInHammeMilleWithSurprise 15d ago

'Adulting' doesn't come without its struggles initially.
