Boundary issues

The story

A couple of weeks ago, I hosted a small birthday party for my close friend at my apartment. The evening was nice, filled with laughter and the clinking of glasses as stories were shared and new memories formed. We weren’t a big crowd, just around ten people. Everyone mingled, but one person really stood out.

Tom, a friend of a friend, was someone I hadn’t met before. At first, he seemed pretty reserved, but then he let his guard down and got... too comfortable? Throughout the night, he acted like he owned the place. Moving furniture without asking was weird enough, but when he started snooping through my kitchen cabinets, I was left speechless.

Brené Brown talks about boundaries being the distance at which I can love you and me at the same time. Tom crossed that line. What I initially thought was harmless curiosity turned into something intrusive. Now, dealing with him afterward feels complicated.

I’m stuck. Should I bring it up directly? Confrontation might cause unnecessary tension. But if I let it slide, am I just giving him a green light for this kind of behavior in the future? I want a resolution that leads to mutual respect, but figuring out how to start this conversation is driving me crazy.
