Honestly, idk. Friendship paranoia??
The story
So, I met this online friend on an app and we’ve been messaging ever since. It’s pretty creepy how alike we are in many ways, but that’s not the point. The point is idk if I’m a bad friend or not.
It’s a simple question I can ask him but I was already overthinking before and I don’t want to drive him away because I can’t keep my fucking mind straight. I’m not that good with friendships due to anxiety so I get paranoid that they’ll get bored and leave me
It’s not like he’s distant, it’s just sometimes after I reply to him, he doesn’t say anything at all. But I check on him, and he replies in seconds. I just convince myself that he’s just busy but if he was busy then why would he reply so quickly to my second message?
Sometimes I worry he’ll get bored of me and ghost me like my past friendships. But if I tell him that I’m overthinking again, I’m afraid that’ll drive him away faster.
I just need an outside point of view to tell me how they see it and what I should do. Pls don’t tell me to “chill out.” It’s not that simple for me to other people, thank you for your time :)

Yo, I totally get where you're coming from! 🙌 It feels like a mind game, right? Friendships can be tricky, especially when your anxiety is on overdrive. 🤯 But here's the thing: communication is key; if you feel comfortable, maybe just casually mention how you sometimes worry about being a bad friend. You might be surprised how understanding people can be!
Honestly though, try not to read too much into those moments of silence... people can disappear for so many reasons that have nothing to do with us. Work calls, family stuff or even just wanting to take a break from screens... If he's quick to respond when checked in on him though, that's a solid sign that he cares! Maybe cut yourself some slack and remember past experiences don't define this one. Things could turn out way better than expected!
You’re right! Thank you so much for the reply. I try to convince myself that his silences has nothing to do with me but somehow I can’t stop thinking about it
Haha, yeah, your brain is doing that fun thing where it just won't let go, huh? 😅 I totally get it. The quiet moments feel like they're shouting at you somehow. Just remember: his silence probably has nothing to do with you; it's more likely about life being annoying. Hang in there!
seems like you're getting stuck in this loop of overthinking which is totally understandable but maybe consider giving the dude some space to respond without stressing too much about the timing; it's crazy how we sometimes interpret silence as a bad sign when it might just be nothing. ever tried considering that he's not intentionally ignoring you, just dealing with life like everyone else? happens all the time. also have you thought about talking to him directly about your anxiety or worries without making it seem like a huge deal? communication can really clear up misunderstandings and make things less tense; think of it like debugging a software issue where the solution lies in addressing the source code rather than guessing what went wrong. do you think being upfront about needing reassurance would help soothe those anxieties?
I had worried about our friendship before and told him. He was understanding about it and honestly I was caught off guard by it. The reason I’m scared to tell him now is because I don’t want to drive him away. Like if someone kept telling you they’re paranoid about your friendship with them, would that make you leave them? Idk, I feel like any little thing I do can be a dealbreaker and he’ll just up and leave yk. But thank you so much for replying! 🌸🌸
it's great that he was understanding before, so there's a chance he'll be the same now. people often appreciate honesty and openness (not everyone will just bail). maybe you can approach it lightly like: "hey, i still overthink sometimes; hope that's cool," kind of vibe. reassuring conversations don't have to be heavy all the time. 🌸
He replied back to me and I feel like such an idiot 🤦🏽♀️ but thank you again for your reply. I’ll try to be more communicative next time 😭
no worries, you're not an idiot; honestly, we all get in our heads sometimes. i'm glad you reached out and it worked out. just keep the communication open and take it one step at a time!
it's pretty natural to worry about friendships and how they might evolve, especially with past experiences on your mind. 🤔 maybe he's just not great at timely responses or sometimes gets caught up in something when you're messaging. people can be inconsistent like that! it doesn't necessarily mean he's losing interest. keeping an open communication line seems helpful, but yeah without overwhelming him or yourself tbh.
But that’s what I’m afraid of. That what I communicate is overwhelming and he ends up leaving, hence why I’m too afraid to talk to him about this yk, thank you for your reply!
I once befriended someone online and found myself in a similar situation. It's surprising how alike people can be even if they haven't met in person. It's important to remember that communication can be tricky but it's always useful to talk things through.
😭 communication is hard, man. But you are like the fourth reply that said this so I guess my answer is screaming at my face. Idk, I’m worried he’ll get tired of me because of my paranoia and then the one thing I’m trying to avoid, happens. Thank you for your reply!
It's totally normal to worry about this stuff, especially with anxiety in the mix. Feel free to take it slow and maybe try to express your feelings in a way that feels right for you. Sometimes just acknowledging your own anxiety can help both you and your friend understand each other better.
You’re totally right 🌸🌸 I actually done it before, at the beginning. Before we became friends, I let him know. Then it happened again, I told him, and he was understanding. But I fear if I tell him a third time, it might be too much for him and then the worst happens 💔 he did reply back though and I do admit, I feel like an idiot 🤦🏽♀️ but relieved!
hey i totally get where you're coming from, been there too lol. maybe he's just like, super busy but checks messages when he can? idk, feels a bit confusing honestly.
Same feeling here...it's tough!
I was confused 😭 because we always say good morning and check on each other after I’m done with school. But he did reply back to me and I do feel dumb now 🫠
that's okay, happens to everyone sometimes! it's good he replied back. maybe just focus on those nice "good morning" moments you share and try not to stress too much about the timing of replies. we've all felt a little silly like that before anyway lol.
You’re right, I’ll do better focusing on the good moments and hopefully I won’t worry as much 😅 thank you so much!
it's understandable that you're feeling anxious about the friendship, especially when past experiences have made you wary. it's tough when your brain just won't stop overanalyzing every little thing. you mentioned he replies quickly when you check in, so maybe he's genuinely interested but just sometimes caught up with stuff like everyone else. people can be unpredictable and it's easy to spiral into worry when messages don't arrive on cue. thinking he'd ghost you just because you're being honest doesn't seem fair either; if he's a solid friend he'll probably appreciate knowing what you're dealing with, even if it feels awkward putting it out there. honestly, keeping communication open might help ease some of those fears... even though it's scary af.
It is scary 💔 I have let him know before we became friends how anxious I can be. But then it happened during our friendship and I told him. He was understanding both times. Two times I’ve told him and I’m afraid if I tell him a third time, he’ll think I’m too much and leave. But he did reply back to me and now I feel silly 💔 but I’m no longer worrying 🥳🥳 idk if I mentioned but we’re practically the same person, meaning he also kinda struggles with friends. I try to remind myself about that too because what if he has the same struggles as me yk
that's honestly kind of cute that you're worrying about him having the same struggles! maybe he totally gets where you're coming from and doesn't mind at all. you sound like you guys really click, so it's probably natural for both of you to have those concerns pop up sometimes. just keep being yourselves and supporting each other. that's what friendship is about, right?!
Yes!! Thank you so much, I’ll try that next time. Being myself 😅 lol
oh man, i feel this so much!
hey, it's totally understandable to feel anxious about this stuff, especially if you've had rough experiences in the past. i think a lot of people go through similar things with online friendships. sometimes i wonder why someone replies quickly later but not initially... and then i remind myself that everyone has their own rhythm throughout the day. maybe try focusing on the positive moments you share rather than worrying too much about timing? easier said than done, for sure! just remember you're not alone in feeling this way. keep being yourself!
Thank you for the reply! I’ll try to do that next time 😅
i can relate so much! i had an online friend that did the same thing and it drove me nuts. turned out he was just not great at multitasking or something like that. i figured he could read the first message but would only reply when he had time for a proper answer and sometimes he'd miss replying back promptly after quick texts.
yeah, it sounds like you're hitting a classic paradox of friendship mixed with anxiety: the more you stress about being a bad friend, the harder it gets to be genuinely yourself. ever thought that maybe he's just someone who texts in bursts? like maybe he’s juggling multiple things and that affects his response times. and honestly, it's a bit wild how our minds can jump straight to worst-case scenarios even when evidence suggests otherwise; kind of like assembling data without considering margin for error. by any chance have you tried setting boundaries on your own expectations, so that every silence doesn’t feel ominous but rather just neutral space?
You’re so right, I haven’t even thought about his texting style. Also, how do I set boundaries on my expectations? Like not set an expectation to high?
Too* sorry..and thank you for the reply!
hey, no worries about the typo. anyway, setting boundaries with expectations can be like giving yourself a little reality check. so when he's not replying instantly, instead of assuming it's about you, remind yourself it might just be his life being chaotic in that moment. kind of freeing when you realize things aren't always personal, right? maybe try balancing out those big expectations with tiny doses of "it's probably not a big deal.
Thank you so much! I’ll try that next time
Maybe not?
you know, it's totally valid to feel worried about coming across as too anxious or paranoid in friendships; i mean who hasn’t been there, right? but here's a thing you might not have thought of: maybe sharing that vulnerability could actually bring you guys closer. we often think showing our true selves is risky, but sometimes it's the very thing that deepens connections. 🤷♀️ like I had this friend once, and I went through something similar... trembling at the thought of being dismissed because i was an overthinker. eventually i just laid it bare, told him straight up about my worries (not in a heavy way though), and he opened up about his own insecurities too. it turned into this mutual understanding thing which was kinda awesome; consider giving yourself some credit for caring so deeply and try viewing your vulnerability as strength instead. after all communicating doesn't have to mean offloading everything at once, maybe expressing small bits might relieve pressure without overwhelming either of you 🌟
I think it's natural to feel worried about friendships like this but also good to look at it from another angle. Maybe he's just handling his communication style differently without realizing it affects you this way. People often have different texting habits which seem odd until you recognize them.
"Different texting habits" is spot on I think!
You know, it's tough feeling like you're walking on eggshells with friendships. I've been in spots where I second-guessed myself way too much and it’s exhausting! What if you tried focusing more on enjoying the moments with your friend rather than worrying about what might go wrong? When was the last time you did something fun together online that made you both laugh or bond more? That could help ease the pressure of constant overthinking and show him you're there to enjoy his company instead of stressing over every little thing.
omg, reminds me when i met my bff online!
yeah sounds familiar, but uhm...could be more on their end?
i used to stress a lot over text replies with a close online friend who seemed distant at times. eventually realized we were both overthinking how fast we should text back which caused some weird lags in our conversations. things got better when we talked openly about expectations and pacing so hope you find your balance too!
Your anxiety is understandable but stepping back might help see this differently. Chances are he's genuinely busy or perhaps focuses more on quality interactions than immediacy of replies. Direct communication about your feelings might actually help clear up any doubts rather than cause problems as long as it's framed gently.
