The story

hey folks, need some advice on how to make someone feel special without making it weird. so there's this thing that happened and it's got me scratching my head. my best friend's birthday was last week, right? thought i'd pull out all the stops, surprise them with a lil' heartfelt gesture... you know, the works. but man, did i miscalculate! instead of them feeling all warm and fuzzy inside, things got awkward real fast. like, they didn't even know what to say or where to look... yikes! here's the kicker: i actually put effort in, i'm talking baking a cake from scratch (with an unholy amount of sprinkles btw), made a collage of our pics from way back when and even tossed in a mix tape for nostalgia's sake; what could possibly go wrong? turns out everything.

i'm seriously wondering what else i could have done differently. it's not like i went overboard... okay maybe the life-sized cardboard cutout wasn't necessary but hey, at least it was memorable, right? but now i'm all paranoid about trying again because i don't want that look of 'what on earth is happening' again. i just wanted them to feel genuinely special without overdoing it like some cheesy rom-com scene gone wrong; i mean we've all seen those movies where grand gestures win hearts left and right but this ain't hollywood!

so here i am chatting about it online with the faint hope someone might throw me a bone or two when it comes to making your bff feel appreciated without looking like you planned mission impossible birthday edition. maybe using prosecco balloons next time won’t scream ‘try-hard’. suggestions welcome! gotta be honest though...if anyone says anything along the lines of just keep it simple... i'll probably roll my eyes into another universe.
