Nice things to say to a girl
The story
So there I was, chilling at my favorite corner café, sipping my usual cappuccino, when I couldn't help but eavesdrop on this riveting conversation between two strangers. They were deep in some heartfelt discussion about the magical powers of compliments. I mean, really? It’s wild how a couple of kind words can totally flip someone’s day around, especially for girls. One guy was bragging about how telling a girl she had a nice smile turned her into a whole new person, like he cast some spell or something. The other one chimed in about how mentioning resilience or charm can totally lift someone’s spirits. Meanwhile, I'm just sitting there, mentally taking notes like I’m prepping for a TED Talk on how to be a decent human being.
Working in human resources, I think I know a thing or two about the whole encouragement thing. But there I was last week, feeling inspired by these dudes, and decided to compliment a colleague on her presentation skills. It was a simple comment, but bam! Her face lit up like a Christmas tree. It’s crazy how specific compliments work so much better than the generic fluff. It’s like the difference between a lukewarm cup of coffee and one that’s piping hot: the right touch makes all the difference. Listening to those two reminded me of all those lectures on respect and love, like I was back in college learning about psychology while trying not to fall asleep. I swear, if I had a dollar for every time I heard about the "power of positive reinforcement," I could probably afford to buy everyone in that café a drink. But hey, at least I got a good laugh out of it.
