talk to girls
The story
Talking to girls makes my heart race a little faster, and not in a good way. I recently moved to a new city for my job as a software engineer, and work has been great. But socially? Ugh, it's a mess. I realized just how tricky it is to connect with women in casual settings last week at a coffee shop. I was there, coding away, when a woman sat next to me. She was engrossed in a book titled "Empathy-Led Design." I thought, cool, I can totally use that to strike up a convo since I dabble in user experience at work. Instead of saying anything, I just kept staring at my screen, overthinking every possible way to approach her without sounding like a total weirdo. With guys, it's easy. Just a simple "what's up" and we're off. But with women, it feels like I'm trying to solve a Rubik's Cube blindfolded.
My brain shifts gears when I talk to women. It’s like switching programming languages. When I meet guys at tech meet-ups or gaming events, the conversation flows. We chat about tech stacks and the latest games. Zero second-guessing. Just last month, I went to a community gardening event and chatted with two guys who were trying to figure out why succulents need less water than they look like they want. It was easy and fun. But then I tried talking to a woman about her herb garden, and I was completely lost. I ended up saying something lame like "nice basil." Really? That’s all I could come up with?
This isn’t some deep-seated issue or bias against women. I’ve just noticed these subtle differences in how we communicate, and it throws me off. Maybe I overthink it all, worrying about how I’m perceived instead of just enjoying the moment. I can't help but wonder if managing expectations plays a part too. Maybe if I'd had sisters growing up, I’d have had more practice with casual chats that didn’t have any ulterior motives, just sibling banter.
I’ve read advice on starting conversations with simple compliments or light topics like the weather before diving deeper. That’s solid advice and I get it, but context is key, right? I just want to create genuine connections without putting needless pressure on myself or anyone else. It’s exhausting trying to figure out why some moments feel so different from others.
