why do i isolate myself?
The story
have you ever found yourself pulling away from social situations even when you know they could actually be enjoyable? I started noticing this weird pattern creeping in over the last year, but a recent family gathering really pushed me to think about it. Like, why do I keep building these emotional walls around myself? It’s like I’m in some medieval fortress, barricading myself from people I actually care about, even though somewhere deep down I know they matter. I thought about quoting Aristotle, because isn’t he the one who said humans are social animals? But honestly, I feel more like an island most days.
Take that family event last month. It was supposed to be a chill get-together, you know the drill: small talk about everyday stuff, catching up on who’s doing what. But underneath all that surface-level chatter, I was a bundle of anxiety. I could sense that everyone was just going through the motions, putting on a happy face while I was trapped in my own head, drowning in thoughts about why I was even there. Sure, I tell myself work is a good excuse to skip out on things, but who am I kidding? I’m really just hiding away in this self-imposed bubble.
People might see introversion as this beautiful thing, like a chance to reflect or dive into a good book. But for me, it feels more like despair than tranquility. I found myself sitting there, watching the clock tick away, wishing I could just disappear instead of engaging in conversations that felt as empty as they were exhausting. I mean, why waste time talking about the weather or the latest family gossip when I could be doing literally anything else?
After a few hours of this, I realized I need to figure out my priorities. I’ve been avoiding meaningful connections, and it’s like I’m stuck in this cycle of second-guessing myself. Why do I keep showing up to these gatherings if they just make me feel worse? I need to confront this issue instead of letting it simmer beneath the surface. Just thinking about it gets me fired up, but then I wonder if I’ll ever find the courage to actually change.
