Torn Between My Boyfriend and a Crush
The story
I’m in a relationship that has lasted six years. We live together, and we even work at the same workplace. We’ve been through a lot together, and he’s a huge part of my life. But lately, I’ve been feeling so confused about my feelings that I don’t even know how to explain them anymore. There’s a guy at work who’s somehow managed to get into my head, and the weirdest part is that he’s not even a new employee. He’s been working there for a while, and I never really paid attention to him before. In fact, there were moments when he even annoyed me. I didn’t find him particularly interesting, and I never imagined I’d end up feeling this way about him. But then, at some point, we exchanged a few looks. We smiled at each other a couple of times, and suddenly something changed in my head. And I mean, NOTHING has actually happened between us. We’ve never properly sat down and had a conversation. We’ve never talked about our lives, our interests, or anything personal. We’ve only had a few brief interactions, like when I asked him to help me with something at work. That’s literally it. And yet, somehow, I became ridiculously interested in him. I started looking for him at work, hoping we’d cross paths. I caught myself trying to make eye contact with him, looking for excuses to interact with him, and wondering whether he might be interested in me too. I started replaying these tiny moments in my head and imagining what they might mean. It’s honestly ridiculous when I think about it. How can I feel so drawn to someone I barely even know? I don’t know whether I genuinely like him or whether I’ve created some idealized version of him in my head based on a few smiles and glances. And here’s where everything gets complicated: I HAVE A BOYFRIEND. We’ve been together for six years. We live together, and we work at the same place. He knows that I’m interested in someone, but he doesn’t know who it is. I haven’t told him the person’s identity. Now it feels like there are two completely different sides of me fighting against each other. One side is so incredibly curious about this guy from work. I want to know him better. I want to talk to him, find out what he’s actually like, and understand why I’m so attracted to him. Part of me wants to know whether there’s something real between us or whether I’m just projecting my fantasies onto someone I barely know. The other side of me is still attached to my boyfriend. We have six years of memories together, a shared home, and a life we’ve built together. And I don’t want to hurt him. I don’t want to throw away something meaningful just because I’ve suddenly developed a crush on someone else. But the worst part is what happens after work. When I’ve spent the day seeing this other guy, exchanging glances with him, or simply being aware of his presence, I come home feeling sad and confused. It’s as if I have to force myself to return to my relationship. I try to make myself feel the way I used to. I try to initiate hugs and kisses, to be affectionate, to do all the little things that have always been normal for us. But sometimes it feels like I’m forcing myself to do these things rather than genuinely wanting to do them. And that scares me. I don’t know whether my feelings for my boyfriend have faded naturally over the years, whether I’m just bored of being in a long-term relationship, or whether the excitement of having a crush on someone new is making my relationship seem less exciting by comparison. Maybe I miss the feeling of a new connection. Maybe I want the butterflies, the anticipation, the uncertainty, and the excitement of getting to know someone. Maybe I’ve become so comfortable in my relationship that I’ve forgotten what it feels like to be interested in someone new. Or maybe these feelings are telling me something about my relationship that I’ve been trying not to acknowledge. But there’s another side to this that makes everything even more confusing. When I don’t see this guy for a while, my feelings for him gradually fade. I still think about him occasionally, but the intense excitement starts to disappear. And when that happens, I notice that my warmer feelings toward my boyfriend begin to return. It’s almost as if my emotions depend on whether this other guy is physically around me. When he’s there, I’m excited about him, looking for his attention and wondering what could happen between us. When he’s not there, I slowly stop thinking about him so much, and I start feeling closer to my boyfriend again. So what does that even mean? Do I actually have feelings for this guy, or am I just infatuated with the idea of him? Am I staying with my boyfriend because I genuinely want to be with him, or because six years together have made it incredibly difficult to imagine my life without him? And if my feelings for my boyfriend come back whenever this crush fades, does that mean I still love him? Or am I simply attached to the familiarity and security of our relationship? I feel guilty because my boyfriend hasn’t necessarily done anything wrong. He’s not a bad person, and I don’t want to make him suffer because I can’t figure out what’s going on inside my own head. At the same time, I don’t want to spend the rest of my life in a relationship simply because I’m afraid of losing someone I’ve been with for so long. I also don’t know whether I should try to get to know this guy from work. Part of me thinks that having an actual conversation with him might help me stop idealizing him. Maybe I’d discover that we don’t have much in common and that I’ve built this whole fantasy around practically nothing. But what if talking to him makes my feelings even stronger? What if I discover that the attraction is real? And what if he turns out to be interested in me too? I know that nothing has happened between us, and I’m not claiming that he has feelings for me. For all I know, those looks and smiles might mean absolutely nothing to him. I’m just trying to understand why such small interactions have had such a huge effect on me. I feel like one part of me wants to protect the relationship I’ve built over six years, while the other part wants something new, something exciting, something that makes me feel those butterflies again. And I genuinely don’t know which part of me to listen to. Has anyone experienced something similar? Can you develop such an intense crush on someone you barely know simply because you’re craving novelty or excitement? And how do you tell the difference between temporary infatuation and the realization that your current relationship might no longer be right for you? I don’t want to make a decision I’ll regret, but I also don’t want to ignore my feelings until I end up hurting everyone involved, including myself. I honestly don’t know what to do.
