Admirable qualities
The story
You know, people at work always tell me that I am a 'model employee' because of my so-called admirable qualities. Honestly though, it's exhausting living up to those expectations. They think I've got everything under control when in reality, I'm just trying to keep my head above water. The constant pressure to maintain high standards is killing me like I'm always one step away from losing it all.
The other day during a team meeting, the manager praised my 'exceptional attention to detail'. Yeah sure, I caught a few errors on the project report but it wasn't some superhuman effort. It was just another day of double-checking things while thinking: am I good enough? 😅
Everyone's got this perception that I'm calm and collected. Meanwhile, inside my head there's a raging storm that's anything but calm; I'm struggling with imposter syndrome every single day. It's like that time in college when everyone thought I naturally aced exams, but really I was burning the midnight oil cramming more than anyone else.
I get it - nobody wants to hear complaints about being recognized for their work. That's why it's tough expressing how these compliments don't match how insecure I feel inside sometimes. Trying hard not to let them down becomes yet another stress factor on top of an already demanding job.
But hey, maybe they see something in me that I can't see myself: and perhaps there's hope for self-improvement after all this chaos? Who knows? Maybe one day I'll believe the praise instead of letting it add pressure.
