my feelings are hurt
The story
I thought I was having a normal lunch break, just trying to recharge for the rest of the day. Instead, I overheard two colleagues talking about me, and it wasn't exactly flattering. They were tossing around words like "incompetent" and implying I don’t understand basic concepts. It left me feeling confused and unsure about what to do next.
This industry relies heavily on specific language and communication that should be respectful and precise. What I heard was neither. I get that constructive criticism can help people grow, but it should be delivered in the right way, not behind someone’s back. This kind of behavior can ruin the collaborative spirit we all need.
Now I'm stuck wondering if I should confront them directly or take a more measured route, maybe involve HR to mediate. I also think about whether I should reflect on my own performance to see if there’s something I need to work on. It feels like a catch-22.
I remember something Churchill said about criticism not being pleasant but necessary. Those words ring true for me right now. I just want to figure out how to keep things respectful while also trying to improve in this environment.
