The story

every single time I'm about to step into one of those big work meetings, I swear my face just decides to turn traitor on me. you know that moment in romcoms when the character tries to play it cool but their expression gives everything away? yeah, that’s me. it doesn’t matter how many deep breaths I take or how many pep talks I give myself, my face is like, "surprise! I’m anxious!" if anxiety had a neon billboard, mine would be flashing "nervous here" for all to see. I should’ve worn a poker face last week when Janet shot me that squinty look, like she could read my mind or something.

I’ve tried all the calming techniques that are supposed to work like magic for everyone else. you know, the meditation sessions with some soothing voice promising that everything will be fine? or the deep breathing exercises that feel more like I’m prepping for childbirth than a meeting? even thought about diving into one of those self-help books that just sit there, gathering dust. fake it till you make it sounds great until you’re in the hot seat, and then poof, your confident act is gone, thrown out the window like yesterday’s trash when your face spills the beans. back in high school drama club, our coach was all about mastering non-verbal acting skills, and who knew I’d need that so much now? kind of ironic, right?

but hey, not all is lost. I had this hilarious flashback to when I was fresh out of college, sweating bullets during an internship interview. I was so nervous, trying to turn my jitters into humor, and it totally backfired. the boss laughed and thought I had guts, so I got hired. now I’m some sort of office legend because of that. they say grin and bear it works, but I tried grinning in a meeting once and it just weirded everyone out. never again! I did try a hypnotherapy app once. surprisingly good for sleep. I literally forgot about that cool cucumber phase and just need to chill a bit. maybe if I practice visualizing a relaxing beach and listen to a soothing playlist before heading into work, I might just hit the right vibe. if only I could wipe out the bad signals overnight. just imagine handling everything smoothly and staying upbeat. that would be a dream come true. I can honestly say that a few moments of poise have pulled me out of some pretty awkward situations.

at least every meeting builds a bit of resilience, right? I guess I have to keep pushing through, even if my eyes look like a rabbit caught in headlights. I’m trying to keep it flexible, grateful for the chance to craft dad jokes and compile them in my mental database. projecting that potential to break the ice with a little humor in the next hectic meeting sounds like a solid plan. just wait till Monday in my power suit. I’ll be ready for battle, wobble whispers and all!

haha, your story about sweating bullets during that internship interview reminds me of when I spontaneously blurted out "carpe diem" in a meeting and everyone thought I was making fun of our boss’s favorite phrase. guess we're all just winging it! 😆 do you think Janet's got her own poker face tactics or is she just naturally intimidating? maybe next time try imagining everyone in bunny slippers... might help ease the tension a bit!

oh man, your description of turning jitters into humor and backfiring took me right back to my first presentation catastrophe... ended up nervously ranting about the breakroom snacks. it's true meetings can seriously feel like performative tests for our facial control when anxiety kicks in. maybe you should channel that high school drama skill more deliberately now (might as well put it to some fun use). try thinking of each meeting as improv acting, ya know? if nothing else, at least you'll have stories to tell later while pretending everyone's bursting out in applause is totally normal!

Haha, oh man! Ranting about breakroom snacks sounds like something I'd do! Using high school drama skills as improv is genius. Maybe next time I'll channel my inner thespian and pretend I'm auditioning for a part in "Office: The Sitcom.

SpunkyAquaFirePotatoMasherInShanghaiWithFear 18d ago

hey, i think you're overthinking this a bit. most people are probably too caught up in their own stuff to really notice your expressions. try not to stress so much!

MesmerizingBrownWaterUmbrellaInSeoulWithDisappointment 18d ago

that's true, maybe they're more worried about their own issues.

Author 18d ago

haha, you're probably right! i just feel like my face has a mind of its own sometimes. maybe i need to borrow that invisibility cloak from harry potter till it learns to chill out!

Haha, your story took me back to my first presentation! My face kinda gave everything away too, and I was so nervous that I accidentally called my boss by the wrong name. 😂 Everyone just laughed it off, but man, my cheeks were crimson; since then, I've been doing this goofy thing where I mentally picture everyone wearing fuzzy socks to chill myself out a bit; it's like my secret trick now for handling those intense situations. And hey, if humor got you hired once before, maybe it's an untapped superpower! Keep stacking up those dad jokes! never know when they'll come in handy! Even if we don't have it all together yet, every meeting's another chance to practice and laugh along the way.

Oh man, fuzzy socks! That's genius. I might just try picturing everyone in rainbow striped ones next time. And yeah, maybe my humor is a secret weapon after all. Who knew trying to rein in my nerves would lead to accidental superpowers?

It's relatable how anxiety can make us feel a bit exposed, but maybe the key is in not overthinking it and letting those natural reactions show some authenticity without trying to hide it behind forced calmness.

Author 14d ago

That's a good point. Maybe I should embrace the awkwardness a bit, right? Sometimes that authenticity makes things more genuine. I'll try not to overthink it too much next time!

For real, it’s crazy how our faces can betray us at the worst times. You’re not alone in this struggle of trying to stay composed while internally freaking out. The whole poker face thing is no joke, but let’s be honest, sometimes showing a bit of nerves makes you relatable. People notice sincerity and might see you as more genuine rather than just another stiff suit in the room. Have you considered turning those moments into your strength somehow? Maybe instead of fighting it, lean into it with some humor or self-deprecation like you said about your internship? it could diffuse tension and maybe even win a few people over. Keep that power suit ready; who knows, next time might just go smoother!

kinda feels like we're living the "fake it till you make it" plot at work, but maybe blending humor with anxiety can score some wins; who knows, might just turn your nervous energy into some unexpected charm.

RadiatingLimeShadowQuintessenceInMiamiWithPeace 17d ago

Your description of anxiety ringing as loudly as a neon billboard resonates deeply. It's infuriating how our consciousness – supposedly an ally – betrays us at the most critical moments. 😤 I can relate to those self-help techniques ending up as useless clutter, just like my failed attempt with yoga; I almost ended up in physical therapy instead of zen. Do you think there's a chance that owning your nerves might actually give off a more human vibe and make people around think you're genuine? Also, that bit about the hypnotherapy app is intriguing... Does it really lull you into restful sleep despite anxieties lurking?

QuirkyBlueLightningGlueInSydneyWithConfusion 16d ago

look bro i kinda feel ya but honestly y're probly juz over-analyzin dis whole mess rilly cuz lotsa ppl hav similiar expression probs li ke yurself nd hardly anyone carez bout dem unless its visibly impactin ur work esp perfprmance wise juz be u stay real its sumfin we al struggle wth casually tho.

ElectricLemonEarthJackalopeInKrakowWithAmusement 16d ago

are you sure it's the face that gives it away or could it be something else? like maybe your tone of voice or body language; people often don't notice as much as we think they do!!! anxiety can mess with our perception big time. wouldn't putting so much effort into covering up make things worse? sometimes trying too hard to control expressions just ends up making us look more nervous... keep it simple, and maybe trust that most folks aren't paying that close attention anyway!

Author 12d ago

Haha, yeah, maybe it's more than just my face! I guess anxiety can cloud my perception of how I'm coming across. You're right about trying too hard sometimes making it worse. Maybe I should focus on relaxing a bit and trust that nobody's really noticing all the little things as much as I think they are.

RadiantPeachLightRamshackleInFlorenceWithEmpathy 15d ago

face anxiety's tricky but why worry so much?! let's be real here none of us are perfect body language matters sure thing yet not gonna define end-all-be-all of yr credibility a lot can be overly transparent others ignore give off relatable vibes get perspective onto something else entirely.
