The story

It’s honestly confusing to find myself in a situation where my feelings are tangled up with my work life. I try so hard to keep things professional, but having to interact daily with a former romantic partner makes that really tough. I wanted to maintain a strict professional attitude after we ended things, hoping to avoid any feelings that might mess with the work environment.

The real issue here is the clash between trying to keep my emotions in check and the demands of the job. This workplace requires not just skill but also a laser focus on external factors that drive business success. So, when I try to push my personal feelings aside, it turns into a daily battle for mental balance.

I recently read an article about office dynamics that highlighted the need for separating personal life from work life to boost productivity. The struggle between my private memories and the professional mask I wear gets complicated when I’m constantly near this person.

During a webinar on workplace relationships, the speaker kept stressing the benefits of cognitive dissonance. They suggested sticking to facts and avoiding introspection when dealing with past relationships who are also coworkers.

People often suggest therapy for situations like this, but finding peace while being in constant proximity to someone I used to care about takes way more than just trying to let go. It feels nearly impossible to keep things professional without losing that emotional distance. It’s so frustrating how clingy these feelings can be when I’m trying to stay focused on work, making it feel like a mountain to climb every single day.

Move forward?!

Author 20d ago

I tried moving forward once by keeping headphones on during breaks, hoping music would morph into a mental block. Suddenly, they needed me for a quick meeting, and I was scrambling to untangle my cords while combating flustered emotions. It was more tangled chaos than progress!

Just toughen up....

Author 19d ago

I wish it was as straightforward as simply toughening up. This constant proximity does unique things to the emotional landscape, especially in a professional setting. Pushing feelings aside isn't always enough when they resurface with every hallway encounter or team meeting... it definitely requires more than just willpower.

Sounds like you're living a soap opera at work, huh? 😏 It's entirely understandable that keeping emotions at bay is easier said than done. But hey, maybe focus on how this situation is building your resilience and emotional intelligence; who needs therapy when you’ve got constant life lessons right there at the office?

I sympathize but set clear boundaries.

"Set clear boundaries"; easier said than done!

dealing with emotions at work, especially involving a past relationship, sounds incredibly challenging. i can relate in some ways: had to share office space with an ex once, and let me tell you, those meetings were like walking on eggshells! maybe consider setting small boundaries to reclaim a bit of mental peace? even little changes like altering your routine might help create some emotional space too. remember, it's okay to seek help or talk it out with someone who understands workplace dynamics. you got this! 👏

Author 14d ago

Thanks for sharing that. Setting small boundaries sounds doable. I’ll definitely consider switching my routine a bit to get some distance. It's helpful to hear from someone who's been through it too.

maybe it's worth creating a mental boundary between you guys like visualizing a barrier during work interactions.

QuirkyGreenLightningSketchbookInJodoigneWithPride 17d ago

sounds like you’re stuck in a mental tug-of-war. mixing personal and work life is messy, no matter how much you wanna compartmentalize. maybe mapping out some non-negotiable boundaries with this person could help, even little changes might make a difference.

Your story resonates deeply because I've faced similar struggles at my previous employment where running into my ex was inevitable almost every day. I agree it's crucial to keep things professional however adding some space helps you reflect properly so i'd say perhaps switch your seating arrangement or minimize interactions where possible albeit strictly work-related ones only!

Because even though infrequent interaction could soften recollections occasionally letting ambiguity linger isn't advisable either especially when balancing office duties hence opining specific guidelines will make navigating this awkward overlap manageable in the interim!

Author 17d ago

Thank you so much for sharing that! It's honestly nice to know I'm not alone in this specific awkward space at work. I'll try rearranging my seating and see if it helps... maybe fewer snack breaks near the same area too! This balancing act feels exhausting sometimes, but knowing others have gotten through it gives me hope.

man, that sounds like such a tough spot to be in. it's like mixing oil and water when you're trying to keep things professional with an ex hanging around every corner at work. reminds me of when i tried avoiding drama by taking on extra projects... but ended up seeing them more often anyway since they were always involved. crazy how life laughs at your plans sometimes, huh? sounds like maybe setting some solid boundaries might help, if possible (easier said than done, i know). it's wild how emotions can stick to you like glue no matter what you try. probably why everyone's pushing therapy as the holy grail solution... because we're all just winging it while pretending we've got it together.

Keeping distance is paramount if practical.

JollyYellowLightCDInLosAngelesWithRegret 16d ago

Totally agree! Saw my ex each day....tough indeed....

ChipperSteelBlueEarthZephyrineInEvoraWithSympathy 16d ago

so like... do you wanna keep working there? idk that seems tough tbh cause what happens next if you don't overcome those feelings? are there social spaces at work for talking about these things maybe or can you get another perspective fr?

MysticalRedWoodHerbGrinderInCairoWithEnvy 15d ago

ugh, it’s like your office turned into a drama series with reruns every day! 🙄 have you thought about flipping the script? maybe use this as an opportunity to master some epic poker face skills. sometimes just pretending you've got everything under control, even when the feels are sneaking up on you, can help shift your mindset; think of it as leveling up in the emotional endurance game! sure, it's no walk in the park (or quick fix) but over time... who knows? you might surprise yourself with how much resilience you build. hang in there! 😅

whoa soooo deep man sometimes i wonder y our brains hold onto memories for so long right?? idk bout other people but sometimes thinking about someone too much tho distracts me from important stuff probs best avoiding situations that'll bring up feels again even if that means sidestepping them when poss which ik may not be easy all time jus saying
