Thank you for your leadership
The story
I recently got some unexpected praise from a mentor at work who has been guiding me tirelessly. They told me I have the potential to really excel in my field. Honestly, having someone like that acknowledge my effort and ability was both surprising and unsettling. I thought this recognition would boost my confidence, considering who it came from, but instead, it left me feeling a bit uneasy.
It's strange how sincere appreciation can stir up self-doubt instead of making you feel good about yourself. The weight of their words keeps echoing in my mind: "You have what it takes." Sounds nice, right? But it also brings to surface this deep fear of not living up to expectations. I can't help but think about how this might impact my career. I want to stay true to my work ethics, but there's also this pressure to fit into the corporate molds that other people have shaped. It reminds me of a time in college when my professor praised my paper, and instead of feeling proud, I spent the next week worrying that I wouldn't be able to write anything that good again.
Now, I find myself questioning if I really know who I am. Until recently, I thought I had a solid grasp on my identity, but this whole situation has made me wonder if my mentor's perspective has any truth to it. Am I really capable of what they see in me?
