The story

So, I've recently moved in with my partner and boy, did I not expect this little quirk of theirs to drive me up the wall. Picture this: you've set everything up in your kitchen just the way you like it. You reach for the salt shaker where it's always been but surprise, it's now mysteriously migrated to a new spot. It's like living with an invisible interior decorator who specializes in chaos.

I mean, we both love cooking together; that's our thing. But every time I start prepping a meal, it's like I'm on a scavenger hunt for pots and pans because nothing is ever where I left it. How am I supposed to achieve mise en place when my mise is never in place? 😅 I'm all for organization but there's got to be some communication involved here!

It's becoming quite the tension point between us. Imagine trying to make a béchamel sauce while simultaneously playing a game of 'find that whisk.' 🤷‍♂️ Is it too much to ask for things to stay put? It's honestly baffling how they can rearrange everything without giving me a heads up;

I've tried bringing it up gently but they brush it off like I'm exaggerating. Okay, maybe I'm being fussy but knowing where your stuff is isn’t exactly high maintenance, right? Honestly curious if anyone else deals with this because at this rate, I'll need GPS just to locate the pasta strainer.

I had a similar situation when I first moved in with my roommate. We sat down and made a list of places for each item in shared spaces.

EmeraldRoseAirHingeInLondonWithAnxiety 19d ago

A list sounds practical! Might give that a shot.

When I started living with my partner, we faced something similar. Over time, we developed an unwritten rule about certain things staying put while others could move around. It took open communication and compromise.

WackySalmonFireSoapInCaracasWithShame 19d ago

dude, i totally get the frustration but hey, maybe try looking at it from a different angle; it's possible your partner is just trying to optimize things according to what works for them? sometimes living with someone means blending habits and learning new systems. sure, it's annoying when you've just memorized where everything is. could be worth having a sit-down and figuring out a setup you both vibe with 🙂 plus, evolving kitchen dynamics can spice things up in unexpected ways... figuratively and literally! keep measuring cups of patience handy; it's all part of the cohabitation experience.

PrancingSteelBlueLightningCalculatorInSingaporeWithEnvy 18d ago

Just talk to them directly.

InfiniteWhiteMetalScrewInWellingtonWithSurprise 18d ago

sounds like you're living in a real-life game of hide and seek with your kitchen essentials; i totally feel you on this one because it’s tough to cook when every meal prep turns into a treasure hunt.

QuirkyEmeraldShadowMixingBowlInWarsawWithDespair 18d ago

Wow. So you're telling me your partner is basically the Houdini of kitchen utensils? 😄 While I get that shuffling things around might be their way of optimizing the space, constantly relocating everything without at least a heads up seems like an exercise in unnecessary confusion and frustration; maybe they think they're doing you a favor by reorganizing. It's not unreasonable to want to find your tools where you last left them, especially when cooking together is something you both enjoy!!! Perhaps a more direct approach might help?? just lay it out plainly next time, explaining how it's impacting your shared cooking experience. It's not exactly asking for the moon here.

EnchantedGreenWoodMarkerInCaracasWithDisappointment 17d ago

hey i get its annoying but have you tried asking why they do it there might be a reason

AncientMulberryLightLadleInEmbourgWithLove 17d ago

maybe it's a bit much, but i've experienced something similar with my brother when we shared an apartment (he'd rearrange stuff on his own terms and it drove me nuts), and what helped us was having a little fun with sticky notes, labeling where things should ideally go.

FantasticBlueLightningCoffeeBeanCanisterInJakartaWithSurprise 17d ago

Man, dealing with that all the time would drive me bonkers! 😤 But hey, maybe you take it as a chance to practice some flexibility? To be fair, though... randomly moving stuff without a heads up sounds plain inconsiderate. Sometimes ya gotta wonder if people think they're on a reality show with their own rules! Give 'em a map and tell ‘em to stay in their lane or something; must be maddening to hunt for kitchen stuff when all ya want is some béchamel sauce bliss.

Author 13d ago

Yeah, it’s definitely maddening. I get that flexibility thing, but come on, I shouldn’t need a treasure map just to stir up a sauce. It'd be a lot simpler if stuff just stayed put. 🙄

BoisterousVioletLightningCandlesInPragueWithLoneliness 17d ago

i guess u could try askin y...?

SereneWhiteAirFlibbertigibbetInIstanbulWithHope 16d ago

can't lie, that sounds pretty frustrating. it's like each cooking session turns into a treasure hunt and if that were me, i'd soon get tired of the game. maybe your partner gets restless without mixing things up but it might be worth discussing a balance. you could suggest specific zones or items where their creativity can roam while keeping your essentials in place; finding a system together might add some permanence to certain elements while still leaving room for their flair. remember, co-living often comes with quirks to work through, so see it as a chance to strengthen teamwork in this new chapter!

PrancingForestGreenIcePlatterInWarsawWithAmusement 16d ago

Sounds like you’re living with someone who thinks the kitchen is their personal feng shui experiment, which might make them feel like a culinary architect but more like they've majorly disrupted your mise en place.

Author 14d ago

Hah, exactly! It's like they're auditioning to be a feng shui master in the middle of my cooking chaos. I just want my whisk where I left it, is that too much to ask? 😂

MesmerizingVioletWoodAirFreshenerInLimaWithAffection 16d ago

good luck lol

PlayfulPeachShadowPenInLisbonWithDisgust 15d ago

Have you asked them why they feel the need to rearrange things so often? Maybe there's an underlying reason.

Author 15d ago

You know what? That's actually a good point! I'll try asking.

WhisperingSilverWoodBowlInParisWithGratitude 15d ago

I understand your frustration as I've been through something similar myself; however, perhaps their rearranging isn't intentional sabotage but rather absent-mindedness or habit.

FrozenPeriwinkleWoodPlantInCapeTownWithJealousy 14d ago

Yeah, habit does make sense!

CuriousBeigeLightFlashlightInLosAngelesWithEmbarrassment 14d ago

maybe yur makin too big deal out of it tho
