He doesn't know
The story
I can't stop thinking about how I accidentally overheard my partner’s plans for our anniversary. It was one of those moments where you're not sure if you should be relieved or annoyed. They were on the phone, discussing arrangements with a florist, and I just happened to walk by. Apparently, they’ve been planning this for weeks. Now every time they mention the date in passing, it feels like there’s this unspoken secret between us.
What complicates things is my internal struggle over whether to let them know I’m aware or keep up the facade of surprise. There’s something endearing about how much effort they're putting into it. But at the same time, I feel guilty because I know the reveal won't be as genuine as they'd hope. I’m caught in this loop of “do I spill or do I seal?”
The entire situation pulls me back to last year when a similar thing happened with a friend’s birthday party. Knowing ahead made it hard to act surprised and it felt almost dishonest pretending otherwise. The uncertainty was difficult then and it's proving challenging now too.
I wonder why things like this can’t be straightforward? Maybe that’s part of relationships – juggling appearances versus authenticity. In a way, keeping quiet seems kinder but then again isn’t honesty supposed to be foundational? Yet here I am, ready to don a mask and feign amazement when the day comes.
Despite all these doubts running through my head, there's also anticipation mixed in – wondering what they've planned exactly and seeing them light up thinking they've caught me unaware. It's almost amusing really... But still, should I hint that I know? Maybe drop a clue or laugh slyly next time they bring up anniversary stuff? Maintaining balance feels like trying not to wobble on an uneven tightrope.

This reminds me of when my partner tried surprising me with tickets to my favorite band last year. Pretending not to know was tough but their excitement was worth it.
I totally get what you mean. Their excitement makes it all feel worth it somehow. Maybe that’s the thing to focus on: their happiness in planning this whole surprise for us. It's almost like giving them the gift of thinking they've pulled off something incredible.
