How much more should I pay?
The story
Dear Stranger,
I hope you are doing good. I’ve been carrying something heavy for months and it’s time to toss it into the ocean. In March, my ex-boyfriend broke up over text a few days after our one-month anniversary. We fought because I brought up my issues, and he suddenly ended it, refusing to sort things out. He said "lets be good friends," which felt downgrading. I am 25, he was my first kiss, and I was deeply emotionally connected. When I sent crying notes explaining why I couldn’t be friends, he claimed I scared him, said he had a 107 fever, and said he never wanted to date me anyway. I scolded him back, but I always went back and genuinely apologized, though he never did. Instead, he told me I was toxic, that people will leave me, and I ended up going back to him.
In April, I travelled to his city to for work and met him. That night, I missed my train and had to stay with him. I want to remember that I was the one who begged him and asked him to kiss me in the car just so I could get some closure. Because I missed my train, I asked him to please understand my situation, but he just scolded me and called me stubborn. Before that, he told me that his own ex had caused him so much pain, which is why he became rude and toxic now. He said he liked me and wanted to try again, but only after December. I felt so scared inside, and my gut told me that a relationship wouldn't actually happen and that I would just suffer, so I begged and we went to a room. While kissing, I asked him to remove his shirt because he had seen me exposed before but I had never seen him that way. Then he asked me to undress, and I did. He asked me to perform intimate acts multiple times, and I did it. He asked to go all the way, but I explicitly said no because it was my first time, it wasn't the right environment, there was no protection, and he was scolding me. I was terrified inside, and that is why I kept giving in to what he wanted, because I thought since I initiated the kissing, I was obligated to do it. When I said no to going all the way, he got irritated, said I was attacking his manhood, and threatened to leave the room. I got really scared but I still said no. He came back, asked again, and I did it. Then I asked him to do something for me too. He refused, saying men don't do that for women(men dont go down on women and women will only feel good when they have s*x). I thought it was just his preference, so I asked him to at least use his hands because it was all one-sided and I was starting to feel really bad inside. I told him I had never done it to myself and begged him to go really slow because I was already scared and needed him to relax my nerves. He didn't. He was irritated, told me it would be painful, and touched me very roughly and quickly. It was deeply painful and terrifying. I told him to stop and asked him to go slow, but he just did the same thing and got irritated with me. When I said stop, he did finally stop, turned around, and went to sleep. He didnt let me stop fo rhim until he feels good but for me its my problem and only s*x will make me god. But that night, he told me words that hurt me even more than the physical pain: "Remember you are the one who initiated, who consented. Don't tell this to your friends. Don't come to me after this for a relationship, let's just be casual FWB. You are the one who did this. I already told you if something happens, what if you blame me? See, now you shouldn't." In the morning, I was exhausted, and when he asked again, I just gave did again, booked a cab, and left.
Even when he said never to tell anyone, I did tell my friends and they scolded him (with me) and my therapist explicitly called it coercion. The truth hit me like hell, and the physical pain lasted a day. I confronted him because I was having severe panic attacks, but he claimed I consented and threatened that he had a voice recording. I didn't care because I always openly admitted I initiated. I blocked him, but felt bad for breaking down and relying on my friends, who eventually told me I became toxic and isolated me. From July to September, I tried to end my life multiple times, though I stopped myself each time, yet I kept textting him out of habit.
When we were dating, he wanted a team for his startup, so I arranged it for him. After he broke up with me, everyone said he only came to me just to use me for that team. I felt really bad and later asked him if he only dated me because of my degree or for the team, and he denied it. Yet, even during these past months when we were supposedly trying to be friends, he never once initiated a casual text conversation with me. It was always me textting him first. The only time he ever actually reached out on his own was when he needed some kind of professional help from me. It made me feel like the only reason he kept me around was because he wanted to use my brain and my connections. But my brother is actually working with him in that startup and completely validated reality for me. They had a massive, explosive fight because my ex handles everything so terribly. My brother told him, "Fuck it, if you have an issue we will resign," and the entire startup team threatened to walk out. My brother came to me and said, "How the hell did you love this guy? He is an asshole. He talks rubbish and has absolutely no respect for women. He literally told us he doesn't want women on the startup team because they don't work well. He is a complete misogynist. If he makes any mistake, it’s never his fault, but if we do anything, he shouts at us and gets incredibly rude." Two days after that fight, because his business was in danger, my ex finally apologized to the team, claiming he was just frustrated because his other businesses were losing money and his startup hadn't launched yet. I realized he only apologizes when his professional interests are threatened, but he takes his frustration out on me for free.
Even through all of this, during these months, whenever I did try to bring up the topic of that night, he actually did apologize later on. He would say sorry, but because he apologized, I always ended up feeling terrible inside. I felt bad because I kept bringing it up to him, and I kept thinking I should just leave it alone. I worried that he would feel really bad if I kept bringing these things up to him. He himself told me that it's been months, we are adults, and I should forget about it because he has already apologized so many times.
When I recently texted him saying I was coming to his state for work and asked to meet, he replied incredibly rudely, saying "why would I meet you." We got into a big fight and he threatened to block me. I shot back sharply, saying, "Won't that hurt your manicure or something?" It felt good to stand up to him, but a few days later, I texted him again playfully, saying "you didn't block me yet," just trying to be funny the way I am with my real friends. He took it seriously, and we fought again. I told him I didn't want to be his friend anymore because he is too rude, and asked him to block me because I keep coming back to text him. I stopped talking to him, but yesterday was his birthday, and because I thought his birthday was a day earlier, I went to Instagram to wish him.
When I texted him happy birthday, he told me it was actually tomorrow. I playfully said, "Oh shit, okay, use it for tomorrow, yeah uncle." It was just a joke because he was turning 27, but he got completely serious and turned it into a massive fight, telling me I don't know how to respect people. I told him he gives no respect and expects it back, which is a double standard. The funny thing is, whenever he uses sarcasm or plays around, it's totally fine, but when I try to be funny the exact same way I am with my real friends, he makes it a crime. I do it every time, and it is a total puzzle because sometimes he is completely chill and jolly about it, and other times he explodes like this. I never know which version of him I am going to get. During this fight, that night in April came up again, and he said: "You trapped me. I begged you to go back but you missed your train. You are the one who consented and initiated, yet you are blaming me. Every time I sit and think about it, you are the one who did wrong, not me. I even have a recording if you want to listen, I didn't want to do anything but you were coming onto me again and again." I was completely shocked. I told him, "What the fuck are you talking about? Yes, I initiated, consented, and missed my train, but that doesn't mean you can behave like shit with me. It took me months to recover. You do not get to play the victim because I am the one who suffered, had panic attacks, and wanted to end my life, while you slept peacefully." I reminded him that he had tried to end his life when his ex left him, yet now he was weaponizing my struggles against me, calling me a crazy person, a psychopath, and saying my bad mental state is why I tried to kill myself. I told him to go to hell and fuck off.
He actually called and texted me that same night, saying "Listen, okay I am sorry, I am just having a bad time." Even after scolding him, I still felt bad inside. I told him I am a human being too, that I don't understand why he suddenly gets so angry, and that we should never bring that night up again because we both did wrong to each other. I told him I will always hate him for that night, and he could hate me if he wants. He coldly replied, "You do you, I won't, I don't hate people," trying to act superior. I just said "whatever man, this is my first time living," wished him a happy birthday again, and yesterday night I texted him asking "how was your day birthday boy," and then I locked his chat away.
Why am I writing this to you, stranger? I am writing this because I finally want to toss the memory away and never look back. I know you might think I did things wrong too, and I myself say yes, I did wrong. I made mistakes. But I paid my price. I didn't know any better back then. I just don't understand why I am the only one who has to keep paying the price. I have a top university degree, a massive exam coming up, and I desperately need to secure a job and make my 2026 better. Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
So, if this is a soap opera and the female lead doing this like this stupid what would people will think ?

it's complicated because it seems like there's a cycle of apologies and blame that keeps dragging you back into things, and it's hard to fully break away when someone's constantly shifting the narrative and emotions on you, but maybe focusing on your own goals and what makes you happy could help create some distance from this toxic dynamic.
Tbh if i didnt have this exam I would be even more fucked up. most of the times i shifted my focus to studying.
really good that you're able to focus on studying! I remember this one time when I was going through something similar, and diving into my work actually helped me stay grounded. It can be a powerful distraction and a productive way to channel your energy... keep pushing on your goals; they're what's going to help you move forward!
this is kinda hard to read. Maybe you should have cut him off earlier? idk, it's complicated but it sounds like a mess all around.
I tried to cut him off earlier. I did . everything. but it is liek an addiction. i always went back . i tried so many things. i really did . when i finally sit and go no contact . he comes ,calls and ask for help . and again i say myself, he anyway apologised and im adult enough so i should just put it aside and talk . Even teh last fight he straight up told me Im the one who trapped him and the fact i attempted suicide is becaue im mentally weak. it snapped me . tf he is talking abt . and he in his past tried to kill himself so he should know how lame that sentence even sounded . i scoled him and said never to contact me . and tehn again he called and apologised saying im having crappy days so im behaving like this. i told him im human being too . and he apologised again. unlike everytime he apologised this time something cracked in me . i say myself people have good and bad in them . But even im super angry i would never poke on people mental health . he too have good and bad in him but the good is in fractions . It is a mess . I realised i cant cut it off quick . so i slowly habituated myself . this time i didnt take his words personally. i told myself its his issue to deal with.
it really does sound like he's manipulating you... people aren't perfect, but using your mental health against you is just not okay. I'm glad something clicked for you! keep building those boundaries: you deserve so much better!!
wow, that's a lot to unpack, but honestly feels like you dodged a bullet with this dude; it's not entirely true that you're the only one paying the price here - sounds like he has issues that will affect him too 🙃.
I did dodge the bullet . But im idiot to give me chances again and again. I feel like if only if I had loved myself enough, I wouldn't have let an asshole like near me . so i started loving myself .
it's tough when you realize how important loving yourself is, but it's awesome that you're starting to do it now. honestly, everyone gives way too many chances sometimes! we all learn through experiences, so don't be too hard on yourself. keep focusing on yourself and the amazing stuff you're going to achieve. remember: you're not stuck in a soap opera (though sometimes life really feels like one)🙂
dude this whole story is just a mess. i get you're trying to make sense of all that's happened, but it's like banging your head against a wall; you're replaying the same toxic cycle over and over again. it's clear he's an absolute jerk and there's zero accountability from his side, pretending that what went on was somehow equal responsibility when it wasn't. honestly, dealing with someone who flip-flops between apologizing and throwing blame back at you will only drive you nuts. hit pause! focus on your own stuff right now (like that exam) because dwelling on a dude who's clearly using emotional manipulation won’t help anyone. you've acknowledged mistakes and learned the hard way: that's growth already 🙌 don't let him drag you down any further; moving forward, don't even look back.
idk.... if only i didn't initiate this whole thing, it wouldn't have happened. That is why i told we both made a mistake. i know its not my fault . I do.
Wow, that is a lot to unpack, for sure. First off, it's wild how some people just refuse to take responsibility and twist everything back on you... super manipulative. You're definitely not the only one at fault here, if any at all! It's like being in a relationship with a "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." 😬 Sounds like he's got some serious issues he hasn't worked through himself...definitely see why your gut was screaming at you; Listen to it next time. Here's hoping 2026 brings better vibes and some peace for ya! Keep focusing on your goals and know that this dude's behavior says way more about him than it ever will about you👍💪
Thank you
Damn, that's a lot to unpack. First of all, that guy sounds like an absolute piece of work. I can't believe he manipulated you and tried to twist everything around as if he's the victim here. It's almost like he wanted all the power in the situation. And what's with him acting all high and mighty about not hating people? Such hypocrisy! You're definitely better off focusing on yourself and your future now. Have you considered trying new communities or groups where you can make healthier connections?
he always want to have upper hand . yeah he says he dont hate people. he dont curse people. but he is the kind of a person who twists words , call people names , push people to a limit where people lose themselves and then he starts acting superior saying "u started it ". and when u question him standing on ur ground he says ," im dealing with buisinesses i have bad days imm just frustated , understand me " , this is the only reason why i continued . im an idiot too daam
I get why you stuck around, but it's not your fault for trying to understand him. People like that make you doubt yourself constantly, which is so unfair. You're not an idiot; you care deeply and trust people easily. Focus on finding circles that uplift you instead of dragging you down...
Sounds kinda like my ex…
how are you now ?
Hanging in there, thanks. It took a while to shake it off but I'm in a better place now. What about you?
I can't stop saying I'm the one who brought all this on me. Everyone around me told me to cut him off early. But I let it continue for months. Cutting him off was scary. idk why. But slowly, every day, I removed bit by bit . I'm waiting for the day when, even when I want to reach out, I won't. I still, deep down, feel a bit like I'm the one who is wrong. And if I didn't initiate that day, I would have been better. But then again, I think Its my first time living; I don't know better. I paid my price. And if what he did is wrong; he will pay his.
It's easy to get stuck in that loop of blaming yourself, but it sounds like you're making progress. It's not your fault he acted the way he did. Keep cutting him off bit by bit and give yourself credit for moving forward, even if it's slow.
thank you
Wow, this guy sounds like an absolute tool. It’s wild how he tries to twist everything back on you when it's clear he's the one causing chaos. The fact that he only apologizes when his business interests are threatened speaks volumes about who he really is; honestly, it makes me sick. I’ve been in situations with manipulative people before, and it's crucial to cut them out once you see their true colors. Hope you're doing better and working towards that bright future you deserve!
yeah cutting them off is crct .
yo, that's rough. i remember when i went through some similar shit. my ex was also all about emotional manipulation and made me feel like crap whenever i stood up for myself. lucky for me, one day a buddy just bluntly said, "dude, why are you putting up with that bullshit?" it kinda snapped me out of it. not saying it's easy, but you've already taken the hardest steps of seeing this guy for what he really is. keep leaning on your therapist and creating distance from him. he's clearly toxic and doesn't deserve any more of your energy. focus on that exam, smash it! you got bigger and better things ahead 💪🏽
He is toxic right , but you know when he brokeup with me he said im toxic and im the wrong person and that is why he is breaking up with me . i just lost my mind there . it is not easy cutting him off. but im doing good . even if its liek an addiction i shouldnt talk to the person who litrelly said the fact that i tried to kill myself is because im crazy and im a drama and my mental health is bad . i just.....how did i let this inhumane into my life . God!
sounds like he's projecting his own issues onto you, and that's all kinds of messed up. people like that try to twist reality just so they can feel in control. recognizing it is a big step. keep cutting those ties man, you're on the right path. stay strong!
Thank you
honestly, this whole situation sounds messy and exhausting 😔. i gotta say, it's good you're starting to see how he’s been treating you; no one deserves to be used like that. feels like he only really cares about himself and his own needs, which is totally unfair to you. you've learned from the experience though, and that's what's gonna help you move forward; change up your focus now towards those exams and securing your future 🙌. remember there's so much more life ahead of you with better things waiting 💪!
He is selfish and uses people. but when i point it out he says im not that u r just calling me names and thats making me angry
that’s classic deflection, blaming you to shift focus away from his own actions. i once had a friend who'd do the same thing whenever they were called out, always turning it around on me. it’s tough but realizing this is key to moving forward. hope focusing on your goals gives you strength, you've got this!✨
thank you
man, this whole situation sounds like such a roller coaster.
yea I get where ur coming from been there but i thnk sometimes we jus gotta look back n see the warning signs we missed earlier u know? nobody deserves to be treated like this but in the end gotta stand up for urself too otherwise ppl will only keep coming back and hurting you all over again without caring at all
Exactly what I was thinking. Awareness is key.
i have been cutting him off bit by bit as i said it felt like an addiction and as named trauma bond or something . so i told myself if i cant cut them off suddenly then i will remove bit by bit . even though its taking time and i sometimes feel , what is wrong with me ? do i not have self-respect, or do i not love myself enough ? i just keep moving forward . the panic attacks stopped and thats my win and with his recent words i didnt let them into my brain and his fake apology i didnt take in . i still have the urge to text him but i also have strength to stop myself from doing it . my friends say this is not you . you never let anyone do this to you so why r u letting him . u know when to cut off people so whats wrong with u . i questioned myself the same question million times . i stopped asking why and started doing whatever i can to stop it . its a progress .
sounds like you're doing a great job inching away from him bit by bit.... it's okay if it takes time, don't be too hard on yourself! you're already showing strength by stopping those panic attacks and not letting his words affect you. keep going, it's progress no matter how small.
It's pretty clear from your story that this guy is exploiting emotional and psychological games for his own benefit, a textbook example of manipulative behavior.
shouldve blocked him sooner duh
It's hard to do but necessary!
i blocked him so many times . i tried to cut him off so many times . i couldnt . it was like an addiction. He doesnt even know im trying to run away from him . but somehow whenever i decide to cut him off i always get a msg or call from him . and i told myself well its been months its happened. He apologised. I should be an adult and forget about it . but well it didnt work . i couldnt cut him off suddenly so i made myself habitiated not to talk to him and remove him from my life bit by bit . i always had this guilt/confusion in like he did apologise so why am i still feeling bad abt it . if someone apologises I should let go . but i realised why in the recent fight . He never apologised for his mistake . he firmly believes it's all on me and the only reason he apologised is because i keep bringing the topic . im such an idiot . well whatever . i do feel i brought it all on myself . should have blocked earlier . tried didnt work . so i tried whatever i can .
it's like he keeps pulling you back in every time. the apology means nothing if he doesn't really get why it was needed. sounds harsh, but you gotta break that cycle and focus on yourself.
Correction on my post: I re-read what I wrote and noticed a typo! I wrote that "my friends isolated me", but I isolated myself from them because I was afraid I would hurt them or drain them with my panic cycles. Eventually, they did tell me I became toxic—it stung at the time, but I understood where they were coming from and apologised to them.
I don't want to accidentally throw shade at my true friends. They were actually super helpful during the breakup and supported me a lot. A few unreliable ones showed their true colours, but overall, my core friends were great. Being at home now gets a bit lonely, but I'm doing fine and focusing on my exam!
It's good you're focusing on your exam and acknowledging your friends' support. It sounds super tough, but remember you're not alone. Hang in there!
it's incredibly courageous of you to share your story. being caught in such a tangled web of manipulation and guilt is exhausting, no doubt about it. it's clear he manipulated situations so they always benefited him, disregarding your feelings entirely. you're not alone in having made mistakes, but what's crucial now is how you've recognized them and learned from the experience. it's really telling that while he pretends all cool and superior, he's actually spiraling into his own chaos because guys like this can't sustain acting like they are innocent indefinitely without things crumbling around them 😅 focus on building the future you envision for yourself: you're already taking important steps just by writing this all out and recognizing you deserve much better 👐
eh, cutting ties would probably help?
rly tho whyd u go back?
As I said it felt like an addiction . i fell for the good version he shown me. i tried to accept his anger. but it started to turn into something else and then idk which version i would get so i thought maybe this time he is different. i genuinely wanted to believe he is a good person and he didn't mean to do it on purpose . idk . weird way to think . deep down i believed it was all my mistake . idk why is it so easy to believe other negative words than our own positive realityy. took too long to break the cycle.
you weren't wrong to hope he'd change, but it's wild how bad stuff sticks more than good. hard hitting reality when that cycle breaks, but at least you're out now.
Are you okay?
im doing fine. im focusing on my exam . thank you
wow, this whole saga really sounds like a mess!!! honestly, your story got me thinking about an ex-coworker who had similar traits... dude thought he was untouchable and always tried flipping the script to make himself look innocent. he’d throw tantrums at work and then blame everyone else for his lousy mood!?? your ex seems cut from the same cloth. i mean, it’s crazy how some people deflect on others instead of owning up to their crap. but hey, it's awesome you're seeing through all that now!!! turning the page is tough, especially with someone who's been in your head so much. looks like you’re on the right path though; keep pushing forward with those big goals of yours like getting that job...bet you'll crush it!!!
thank you
man this sounds rough that dude is no good even if you initiated kissing he took things way too far and did not respect your boundaries at all its not just on you also forcing someone into intimacy should never happen trying to leave that behind might be the best thing you can do now focus on yourself first
omg yess totally get that! mine was similar always needing me when he was in trouble smh
You really need to move on.
