bottling up emotions

The story

You know what, I'm honestly at my wits' end. Things with my partner have been like walking on eggshells lately, and it's really ticking me off. It seems like every little thing they do grates on my nerves, and I find myself snapping at them for no real reason. I guess I've been bottling up a lot of emotions I thought I'd dealt with ages ago, but boy was I wrong! There's this unresolved mess with an old friend that left things hanging in the air and every time my partner brings up anything remotely related to it, bam! I'm back there again in all that emotional mess.

It's crazy how something from the past can still punch you in the gut unexpectedly, right? Anyway, this friend and I had this huge falling out over something pretty minor which blew out of proportion because we never addressed it properly. We were thick as thieves back then (always hanging out and chatting about nothing important or everything important depending on the day) and then one tiny disagreement spiraled into complete radio silence 📻. I've obviously got loads of suppressed feelings that didn’t get closure.

Every time those memories pop up when I'm chatting with my partner, they can't figure out why suddenly I'm like a volcano ready to erupt. It's not really their fault (they don't know the whole background saga because I prefer not to talk about that chapter much)I mean who wants to admit they're still hung up over past drama? It's embarrassing laying it all out, you know what I mean? Plus explaining industry jargon just adds another level of complexity because certain terms don’t translate well outside my field!!

Ha! What's weird is sometimes I'll catch myself mid-snap thinking 'What are you doing??' But frustration is already boiling over by then and doesn't care too much for logic or reasoning unfortunately. Things have to change though or our relationship might seriously suffer from this nonsense distraction. So here I am trying venting as suggested by one wise soul seeing if sharing helps lighten the load even just a smidgen.

I hear where you're coming from but maybe it's worth considering talking to your partner about these feelings directly rather than assuming they wouldn’t understand? Communication could be key here.

You're probably right but it's kinda hard opening up without feeling vulnerable.

Bottled-up emotions need addressing.

ThrillingCoralFireNubilousInAccraWithFear 19d ago

Absolutely agree! Sometimes just voicing them starts making it better.

Man, I totally get where you're coming from. It's wild how those unresolved issues from the past can creep into our current relationships and make things complicated as heck! Sounds like you've got some heavy baggage affecting your vibes with your partner, which is unfair to both of you when neither really knows what's up. How are you handling your chats with the old friend (or lack thereof)? Remember, communication's key even if it's awkward or cringe at first 😂 Hopefully venting here helps shake loose some clarity on what steps to take next without dragging that drama back into the middle of everything!

TranquilPearlMetalModemInAbuDhabiWithEnvy 18d ago

Man, honestly, your partner isn't a mind reader and holding onto that old baggage is like shooting yourself in the foot; been there, done that and it only makes things worse.

Author 14d ago

Ugh, I totally get that. You're right, they can't read my mind and it's not really fair to them. Guess it’s time to face that baggage head-on and stop getting trapped in the past, for both our sakes. It might be awkward or painful, but avoiding it obviously isn't doing any good!

Dude, sounds like you really gotta sort out that leftover drama with your old friend; silence just fuels the fire, doesn't it?

MajesticPearlLightRubiginousInCopenhagenWithPride 18d ago

You know, it's kind of mind-blowing how stuff from the past can sneak up on us and throw a wrench in our current relationships. But here's the thing: it's not exactly fair to your partner if they're getting caught in crossfire they never signed up for, right? I mean, you've got this whole unresolved saga with an old friend that you're still carrying around like emotional baggage... So maybe shifting focus from bottling it up to actually processing those feelings could make a difference. Sure, reaching out to resolve things with that friend might seem daunting (or even pointless at this stage), but clearing that emotional clutter might be liberating in ways you can't imagine yet. Can't hurt trying something different, could it??

Opening up about unresolved stuff, even just to yourself, can be a game-changer. This reminds me of something my buddy went through (yeah, different context but similar vibe). He couldn’t shake off past drama and it was eating away at him. It’s kinda wild how things linger like that. What really helped him was finding some sort of outlet where he could freely express his thoughts without the pressure of immediate judgment or misunderstanding. Maybe even journaling or venting to someone apart from your partner might give you an angle you haven't considered yet? Sometimes it's less about the specific jargon and more about just getting it all out there so you can untangle it slowly when you're ready.

When it comes to old friendships gone south I totally get it: there's always something left unsaid lingering around. One time a close buddy of mine stopped speaking over silly stuff too.

SacredAquaWoodFlibbertigibbetInKualaLumpurWithLoneliness 17d ago

Yeah lost friendships hurt deeply for sure!

Author 17d ago

It's wild, right? Those minor things can grow into such a big deal if left unchecked. It's like having this unresolved knot in the back of your mind that just never goes away. I'm hoping venting might help ease it a bit.

I can totally see how the mix of old emotions and current frustrations can lead to a pretty volatile situation. It's almost like this tangled web that you don't even realize you're spinning until you're stuck in it, right? Maybe a unique approach could be to start by journaling your thoughts on both the old friend and your partner. Putting everything down might reveal patterns or connections that aren't super obvious at first glance. Also, if opening up feels too raw, maybe testing small bits of vulnerability (sharing just a few relatable parts with your partner) could build trust progressively without feeling overwhelmed all at once. Who knows, even those baby steps might gradually ease some of the emotional burdens without shaking everything up at once.

you know i get feeling bottled-up too sometimes especially when i'm troubled by past incidents like exams gone wrong or missing deadlines at work (pretty sure everyone has these moments). does dwelling ever bring clarity though or only distract further?
