Gay son
The story
so, i came into the kitchen today and saw my son's diary chillin' on the table. it was open, like totally lying there for everyone to see. i'm like, okay, not gonna snoop or anything but then my eye catches something he wrote: that he's gay 😲. i mean, i love him no matter what, right? but now i'm stuck wondering how do i even bring this up with him without making it awkward or whatever.
this is kinda new territory for me and maybe for him too 🤷♂️. what if he left it open on purpose or maybe by accident? who knows! i'm just sitting here trying to figure out how to be supportive without being that pushy parent who's all up in his space. do i tell him i know or wait til he feels ready to talk? it's complicated.
you know, years ago this stuff wasn't really talked about much. people kept their lips sealed and we weren't super open about these things in past generations. guess times are different now which is cool 🌈👍but it's still nerve-racking cause you wanna get it right as a parent.
i just don't wanna mess this up ✌️! give him his time and all that jazz... at the end of the day (ok maybe a little cliche there) 😂 it's his life so i'm just in the background hoping he feels safe enough to share when he's ready.

hey so i think you're doing fine just contemplating about this. sometimes things aren't perfect but you're thinking about this in a good way for your son even if it feels confusing atm.
That's very true, letting it unfold naturally helps sometimes.
Thanks! It's a relief to hear that. I guess thinking things through before acting means I'm on the right track. It's just such new territory, you know? Like, I really don't want to make a mess of it for him... trying to find the balance between giving space and showing support is tricky.
maybe you're putting a bit too much pressure on yourself to handle this perfectly. i know it can feel daunting, treading carefully in uncharted waters and all that, but perhaps waiting for him to bring it up might actually relieve some of that worry. my friend once confided in me about coming out before telling their parents, and they appreciated having the control over when and how they shared it. you could create an environment where he feels comfortable opening up whenever he's ready by just being your usual supportive self 🏳️🌈😊. after all, if there's one thing i've learned from experiences like these, it's that patience often plays a bigger role than we realize.
I completely relate to your situation. I had a similar experience with my niece last year. It's important to give them space but ensure they know you're open to talk.
It's understandable to think about how to approach this, but have you considered that maybe he left the diary open intentionally? 🤔 Maybe it's his way of starting a conversation without having to actually say it face-to-face, which can be pretty daunting. Waiting for him to initiate might work, but why not just let him know indirectly you're here for him in any situation? Like dropping little hints about acceptance and love around the house. You don't have to dive into a deep discussion right away; sometimes subtle support speaks volumes. 💖
whoa, that's a lot to process all at once 😅!
It's really not that complicated. Just talk to him openly and honestly when the time feels right.
You're probably overthinking it a bit. Maybe let things flow naturally because eventually you'll find the right time.
Yeah overthinking never helps; staying calm usually works best!
It's such a tough spot because on one hand, you really want to show him he has your support unconditionally but on the other, there's always that risk of overstepping and making things awkward.
have you thought about maybe just leaving little hints around that you're accepting and open-minded, like casually discussing LGBTQ+ topics positively when it comes up naturally?
Honestly, kids these days are pretty resilient and have grown up in a different environment than we did. Give them more credit; they're stronger than you might think.
have you thought about just asking how he's feeling lately? sometimes starting with general feelings can lead into deeper conversations without any pressure.
Dude, you caught an accidental peek at his diary?
sounds tricky...
you know, it kinda sounds like you're stuck in a bit of an analysis paralysis situation here; maybe just allow some time to pass and see if more natural opportunities come up for this convo.
I understand where you're coming from, though remember each kid expresses themselves differently. Sometimes patience is key but keep an eye on signs maybe?
I get where you're coming from, and what if he did leave it open on purpose because he wants you to know without having the stress of a direct conversation just yet?
Times have changed indeed, yet parenting remains as challenging as ever! Just keep listening to your instincts while considering modern sensibilities - that's all one can do really.
Be patient but also keep communication channels open.
guess kids know more nowadays!
Your story resonates with me because I once found myself having unexpected conversations due to technology blunders too!
