The story

Returning home from college is a total mixed bag. One minute I'm inhaling the mouthwatering scent of my mom's cooking and feeling all warm inside, and the next I'm battling this stomach churning anxiety. The thing is, for years now, I've been tiptoeing around the idea of telling her I'm gay. It’s like this giant puzzle in my head. How do I even go about dropping that bomb? I mean, I don’t think she would outright reject me, but I also worry about shaking up the status quo we’ve had for so long. My mom is pretty open-minded in many ways, but she’s from a generation that tends to sweep stuff like this under the rug or just not talk about it at all.

So, the other night, we were having one of those casual dinner chats, and she casually mentions how much she admires this celebrity who just came out. I swear my fork nearly dropped. Part of me was like, “Is this a sign? Should I finally just spill the beans?” But then the overthinking kicks in. Did she really mean something by it? Is she picking up on my vibes? Or was it just a random comment with zero implications? My head is spinning with these questions, making it hard to figure out if this was my chance to open up or just another observation with no strings attached. I’ve always prided myself on being honest, so keeping this secret just feels so wrong.

You know, I spend all day discussing sexuality in class with this academic precision, but when it comes to my own life, it feels like I’m walking a tightrope. Those endless debates have given me all the theory I could want, but now I’m stuck trying to figure out how to apply it in real life. Writing this here is a bit of a relief, even if it’s just temporary. How do you even start a conversation like this without shattering the boundaries that have been built over the years? Is there a perfect moment hiding out there somewhere, or is it more about grabbing those fleeting chances when they come, even if they are wrapped in uncertainty?

hi! i read your story, i may not be on your shoes but it seems pretty hard overthinking how to say it to your mom. don't rush yourself in telling it to her, stay calm though. maybe your mom could understand it still since you said she is open minded. maybe you can try telling her what you actually feel on your identity. your mom is kind, she'll be able to understand. but if you think it's not yet time, don't rush yourself you only get yourself get pressured more and it'll only scare the hell out of you. if you truly know your mom, try something she'll appreciate, do not rush and pressure yourself. one day, you'll be able to say it.

I think it's great that you're considering telling your mom about your sexuality especially after she mentioned supporting a celebrity who came out. It seems like she might be open since she's expressed positivity towards people coming out publicly. Maybe take this as a sign that the environment could be safer than anticipated though it's understandable to feel hesitant.

True, her comment about the celebrity gives me a glimmer of hope. It's like she unknowingly gave me a small window to work with. Guess I just need to figure out if I’m ready to take that step now or wait for another moment.
