The story

I feel so out of place with all these traditional family dynamics. My partner and I are both women, and trying to figure out what our own 'lesbian family' looks like has been both amazing and really tough. We constantly deal with questions about authenticity and acceptance in a world that has such rigid ideas about family.

Everyone seems to have this picture-perfect family in mind, with clear roles and structures. Meanwhile, we are just trying to create a loving environment without worrying about what everyone else thinks. People might wonder where we fit in when they think about families, and honestly, it gets tiring. I found some comfort in books like “Families We Choose: Lesbians, Gays, Kinship” by Kath Weston. They really hit home for us.

Building our family means I have to reflect on my own beliefs about gender roles. It’s hard to balance wanting society to accept us with our own happiness. My partner and I talk a lot about getting married or having kids and making sure we can create a diverse environment for them.

But even with moments of joy and milestones that make me feel proud, doubt creeps in. It feels like we are constantly fighting against misunderstandings. Acceptance doesn’t come easily from everyone, even those close to us, and watching them struggle with our transition can be painful. Still, hearing other people's stories reminds me that sticking it out is worth it.
