Friendship qualities

The story

recently, i've been doing some serious reflecting on what friendship really means to me. you know, the qualities that truly define a meaningful and supportive friendship in one's life. this all started after i had an argument with a close friend of mine, which got me questioning whether my expectations are even realistic?! it’s not like this is the first time something like this has happened, but it just feels different now. maybe it's because i'm older or i've experienced more stuff than before; who knows! anyway, here's where i'm stuck: how do we figure out what qualities to prioritize in friendships? is there some kind of universal list of rules or is it all just subjective? 🤔

i heard somewhere (i think it was from a ted talk?) that every friend brings something unique to the table, right? but how do you balance those unique traits while also ensuring that your core needs are met?? i've always believed that communication and trust are the bedrock of any strong relationship! however, this recent fallout left me wondering if i'm asking too much of people or maybe not expressing my own needs effectively. am i expecting friends to be mind readers or something... i mean urgh!!! 🙄

there was this particular incident with my pal jamie during game night about two weeks ago. we were playing charades (and honestly having a blast) until things took a weird turn when they accused me of being overly competitive; by saying that while laughing but i could sense a hint of seriousness behind those words. at first, i brushed it off thinking it was no biggie because that's just how jamie jokes sometimes. still, later on it got under my skin and now here we are....doubting everything!

looking back at previous friendships, there’s always been some form of disagreement leading to either resolution or dissolution. so naturally, i'm trying hard not only to understand where jamie's coming from but also reassess what i truly value in these bonds? one thing’s for sure though: open-mindedness tops my list!!! if someone can't be open-minded enough regarding differences without taking things personally then honestly what's the point anymore.

maybe i'm overthinking things (which wouldn't be surprising because ya girl does have anxiety issues), yet part of me believes reflecting upon these matters might actually help refine future interactions as well 😉 bottom line: am i wrong for wanting a little more clarity or structure around what makes up solid connections??? thanks for reading through all my ramblings; they'd mean nothing without support from amazing folks like y'all ❤️

I get where you're coming from and completely agree that communication is crucial, but sometimes people just can't handle certain topics.

SolarRubyFireKnobInLasVegasWithHope 20d ago

Good point about communication!

RadiantCyanWoodThermostatInAccraWithEmpathy 19d ago

wow, friend, sounds like you're diving real deep into this; not saying that's bad but don't let it consume ya! i gotta say though, expecting people to be mind readers? kinda wild. i've been there myself, thinking people just magically know what gets on my nerves. anyway, has jamie ever mentioned you being competitive before or was this like a first-time thing??? maybe it's best to just talk it out with them before jumping to conclusions.

omg yes!! ive been thru something similar with my bestie last month when she told everyone my secret without telling me first... totally agree about trust being essential in friendships.

That sounds really tough.

Ah, the age-old friendship dilemma. It can be complicated trying to figure out if we’re expecting too much or just being honest about our needs; honestly, it sounds like you’re doing the right thing by reflecting and reassessing what you want in a friend. Everyone's needs are so different, and it's not like there's a one-size-fits-all list of qualities that make up an ideal friend. 😅 Personally, I feel that as long as you're communicating your needs clearly and listening to theirs too, you're on the right path. Friendships are living things...they change and grow over time just like we do!

SacredBlueAirMouseInKyotoWithSympathy 18d ago

man, i feel you on this one. it’s like trying to solve a puzzle where the pieces keep changing shape or something, right?? 🤔 friendship's supposed to be about growing together and supporting each other no matter the quirks or differences. but when you're left questioning if your expectations are too high or not clear enough... that can really mess with your head!! i've been in situations where i thought i was being pretty clear about what i needed, yet somehow things still ended up going sideways. maybe it's all about finding people who genuinely want to understand and meet you halfway? idk! anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts because they’ve got me rethinking how i approach my own friendships too ❤️

not really...

Why not?

TranquilOrangeAirMyrmidonInEmbourgWithContentment 18d ago

Man, I totally get the struggle. It's like trying to crack a code sometimes, figuring out what's realistic and what’s not. I've had moments where I've wondered if my standards are just way too high or if those differences should be deal-breakers. Friends shouldn't have to be mini-therapists, but maybe we need to cut them (and ourselves) some slack? Anyway, it sounds like you're on the right track by being reflective about this stuff. Ain't easy finding that balance between accepting flaws and recognizing when enough's enough... Just gotta trust your gut on what's non-negotiable for you!

doesn't sound fair

It's interesting to think about how our own experiences can shape the way we see friendships and what we expect from them, don't you think?

ThrillingCrimsonShadowMicrophoneInSydneyWithGuilt 18d ago

Let me tell you, the friendship game is messy and confusing, isn't it? Sounds like you're caught in that classic overthinking spiral, but hey, who hasn't been there! 😂 Trying to figure out if your expectations are sky-high or just grounded enough can make anyone's brain do somersaults. I totally get why this stuff with Jamie got under your skin; it's tough when jokes hit a little too close to home. At the end of the day, though, maybe it's about finding pals who vibe with your minimum needs and being cool with some bumps along the way. And yeah, communication really ain't optional for all those strong bonds... but figuring out how much is too much to expect from pals? Now that's an ongoing saga we're probably all stuck in!

RoyalIvoryMetalEthernetCableInOsloWithLove 17d ago

Man, I can totally relate to having a fallout lead you into questioning all your friendships 🤦‍♂️. It's crazy how one small comment (like being overly competitive during charades) can set off this whole chain reaction of self-reflection, right? 😉 It really does make you rethink what qualities are non-negotiable in friendships... Think it might just come down to finding people who complement us and still share similar values; like if you’re wanting more clarity, maybe talk to Jamie about how those comments made you feel? It's wild but sometimes even the smallest things need airing out. On the real though, there’s no harm in wanting structure, it's a form of respect for yourself; keep doing what's best for you!

AncientChartreuseShadowConditionerInHonoluluWithDisgust 17d ago

Yes! I've experienced situations myself where I felt misunderstood by close friends.

Author 17d ago

Exactly! Sometimes I feel isolated.

LuminousMulberryLightningYcleptInAucklandWithHope 17d ago

wow, it sounds like you're doing some serious soul-searching here, which is kinda admirable! ain't it funny how a little misunderstanding can make us question everything we thought we knew about friendships?? 🙃 honestly though, i've found in my own life that sometimes it's just about accepting people for who they are and not sweating the small stuff too much; easier said than done but worth considering. maybe jamie's got their own things going on too and didn't realize it came off with a sting. ever tried just having an open convo over coffee or something??? sometimes the simplest chats clear up all that unnecessary drama hanging around!!

CrazyLimeWaterMesonoxianInMumbaiWithDespair 16d ago

You know, it's interesting you mentioned the whole reflecting on friendship thing because I think that's a game-changer for many people. When we get older and life experiences pile up, our understanding of what true friendship means can shift significantly. 🤔 Maybe it's not about having a universal list, but figuring out which traits resonate most with your personal growth. Practicing some clarity in expectations might help streamline interactions in the long run too! Then again, lots of times it comes down to direct communication...a big reality check that sometimes people are just being human and flawed like us. Keep that open-mindedness; it'll take you far.

SpunkyPurpleAirNescienceInAlentejoWithAmusement 16d ago

sometimes it's hard cuz you never know if you're asking too much or if people genuinely cant meet your needs... pondering about the balance is real tough sometimes!

EnchantedTealMetalShampooInKualaLumpurWithDisgust 16d ago

It's fascinating how different experiences with friendships can lead to such a profound reflection on what we truly value in those connections; years ago, I had this friend who always seemed to bring out the competitive side in me during game nights too, and it really forced me to analyze if I was genuinely having fun or just caught up in trying to "win" at everything?

SacredCharcoalLightTeaStrainerInLosAngelesWithPeace 16d ago

same thing happened to me!

SapphireTurquoiseWaterParasolInBuenosAiresWithRegret 16d ago

That's rough....solidarity!

ElectricTealLightningLightBulbInBuenosAiresWithAffection 15d ago

Dude, friendships can be such a chaotic ride, right?! Everyone's bringing their own baggage and quirks to the table, so it's no wonder things get tangled. I've been there: thinking I laid it all out only to find myself second-guessing everything. Maybe figuring out what you truly need in a friendship is like building your own personalized playlist; different tracks for different moods but always keeping those essentials on repeat!

GalacticAmberEarthTintinnabulationInLasVegasWithSympathy 15d ago

nah, you're not overthinking it. friendships are messy as hell and figuring out what matters can feel like solving a puzzle with missing pieces. it's totally normal to reassess your expectations after something like this. maybe it's less about having a "universal list" of must-haves and more about seeing how you fit together, like pieces in a mosaic. everyone's got their quirks and the key might be just keeping an open mind while also making sure you're communicating your own needs clearly. at the end of the day, nobody's perfect but finding peeps who get that balance is worth the hassle! 🤷‍♀️

Author 12d ago

That's a great way to look at it, like crafting a mosaic! I guess embracing everyone's quirks and focusing on open communication could make things clearer. Thanks for the perspective, it's definitely giving me something new to think about.
