Kind messages
The story
For the past several weeks, I have been receiving these unexpected messages from an anonymous person. They pop up randomly and always contain kind words or compliments about me. At first, I brushed it off, thinking it's just some friend trying to be sweet or a mistake sent to the wrong number. But as this becomes more frequent, I'm starting to feel something else. On the one hand, it's quite uplifting; someone out there appreciates me enough to spend time crafting these messages. It's not every day you get reminders of your worth from a stranger!
However, I can't help but feel slightly anxious about the intentions behind this act. Who exactly is this person? Is there an ulterior motive that I'm not seeing? It's all nice and dandy until you realize you might be dealing with someone who knows you personally yet chooses to remain hidden for reasons unknown...hello, unsettling.
I mean, yeah sure: "A stranger's just a friend you haven't met yet," right? But what if they are not even in the friends zone and instead lurking somewhere in some dark alley of social media stalking people for laughs? The internet makes it so easy for people to hide their true identities, and it leaves me skittish.
What if they're just pitying me because I posted that one time about how tough life was going then... and ta-da: instant alert that this person's life desperately needs cheering up?
I was half tempted to block the numbers a couple of times (if only curiosity didn't kill the cat). It's like when Charles Babbage invented freaking computers he must have known I'd end up stuck here waiting on tenterhooks waiting whether today's gonna bring another charming message.
