over reacting
The story
so, I've been rooming with this person for a while now and generally speaking, it's been pretty chill. like, we've had our fair share of typical roommate stuff – forgetting to take out the trash, leaving dishes in the sink – but nothing majorly serious. until I caught them doing something that really got under my skin; turns out they've been using my super expensive skincare products without even bothering to ask me first! we're talking luxury stuff I save up for because it keeps my skin looking flawless. naturally, I was pretty pissed when I found out.
the funny thing is though, I'm not usually someone who flies off the handle easily but this time it was different. it felt super personal and disrespectful to just help themselves like that so I ended up tossing them out. they were beyond salvageable by then anyway but damn, should I have handled it differently? maybe talked things through with them instead? I'm questioning if my reaction was over the top since now we're in this awkward silent treatment phase which is not fun at all; so if you've dealt with similar drama or have some thoughts on how this might play out hit me up!

I totally get why you felt upset and your privacy was definitely invaded. But maybe having a direct conversation could've helped clear things up without throwing everything away.
Dude, using your stuff without asking is a no-go; that's basic respect. I think it's pretty fair to be upset about it, especially when it's pricey skincare we're talking about! A chat might’ve helped clear the air, but either way, they crossed a line so it’s on them to reach out if things are awkward now. Maybe once tempers cool off you could bring it up casually? If not, then let them stew in silence until they figure out how to apologize?!
yeah i mean its annoying your stuff got used but throwing it away sounds kinda extreme; just talk to them next time lol!
It's understandable you were upset and their actions crossed a line for sure but maybe there was a chance for dialogue instead of ending up stuck in silence.
Yeah, you're right. Probably could've just talked it out first but I was just so irritated in the moment. It's tough being stuck in silence now though, wish I'd handled it differently.
Man, I feel you... that's got to be some level of invasion that sticks with you. Expensive skincare is no joke! Like, who even thinks it's okay to just take someone else's stuff without asking? Seems utterly careless. But considering your next move carefully could be a game changer. Maybe instead of trashing them, having a chill convo could've eased the tension and opened up some dialogue. But hey, hindsight is 20/20 and things might sort themselves out soon. Who knows how it'll turn out, but good luck with however it unfolds.
Roommate situations definitely test the limits of tolerance and privacy; it's fascinating how something as seemingly trivial as skincare products can trigger such intense emotions. From an interpersonal communication viewpoint, it's remarkable how often we assume others know where our boundaries lie when, in reality, they might be completely oblivious. Personally, I've found that addressing things head-on soon after they happen prevents a small misunderstanding from snowballing into bigger issues. Perhaps this could serve as an opportunity to establish clearer rules moving forward?? setting boundaries now might prevent future flare-ups. And hey, maybe it'll prompt your roommate to purchase their own set of luxury serums!
Once had a roommate who kept borrowing my clothes without asking too. It built up until I finally confronted her and we resolved it much better than expected.
come on, you're not entirely wrong for being mad but tossing all your skincare was hella dramatic. i mean, if you were gonna throw them away anyway, why not at least confront them first and see what they had to say? it's like cutting off your nose to spite your face. yeah, it’s disrespectful that they used your stuff without asking but creating this awkward silence isn’t solving anything either. next time just lock up the good stuff or set some clear boundaries before it gets out of hand again. a little bit of communication goes a long way when living with someone else.
sounds like your roommate crossed the line, no question! but throwing out pricey stuff might not have been necessary; think of it like this: now they're probably even more clueless about skincare. next time, maybe put it somewhere less accessible so they can't just swipe it again 😉 i had a roommate who kept "borrowing" my fancy chocolates, ended up labeling things with sticky notes saying "hands off!" and problem solved. sometimes people need clear boundaries spelled out!
Your response makes sense yet talking might have worked as well.
Wow, that's quite the situation. Skincare's not cheap and respecting boundaries is kinda basic roommate etiquette. But could it be they thought it wasn't a big deal? Misunderstandings happen, though upsetting for sure. You might wanna reflect if there was a better way to set boundaries without going straight for the nuclear option. Hopefully ya'll can find a way to hash things out and avoid repeating this stuff! 😅
Seems like an overreaction to me honestly. Having a chat would've likely been more productive than just tossing things.
Dude, I totally get why you'd be fuming! Your expensive skincare is like a personal treasure chest! It's not just about the products. It's the principle of respect, you know? If they can't be bothered to ask first, what else are they doing without asking??? Maybe this is a chance to rethink how you share your space and set up some house rules that aren't just common sense but clear as day. Sometimes silence can give you both time to think but eventually, facing it head-on will probably bring more peace than stress; plus, who knows? They might realize they're being inconsiderate and change their behavior!
So like last year my sis kept taking my fav tshirts she didnt ask she thought i didnt notice which was dumb cuz obviously i noticed right so one day i just told her hey can u stop n she did! no drama just talked it out yknow hellaa easier man
dude, i totally see why you were pissed; skincare is like sacred territory! honestly, a breach of trust like that just hits different. but let's be real: if they don't get the hint from the missing products now, maybe they're thick as hell. one time my brother went through my stuff and didn't even realize until i stopped yelling. it's a pain to deal with awkward silence in your own space though. next time lock those serums up or label them like "touch and you're dead" 🤣 hope things smooth over soon, man!
honestly, sacred territory is right. i guess labeling would help, if they're still around. the silence is killing me though.
ugh hate when ppl do that no respect. but rly throwing em all seemed extra u cld hv said smthng first idk what happened after tho
ugh, that’s gotta be super annoying when you’ve invested in stuff like that. it's not just skincare they took but your trust too; it is surprising how people assume what's yours is fair game. i feel ya on the irritation. one thing i've noticed is some folks really just don't grasp personal boundaries until they're told directly; maybe if things chill a bit later, you could chat to clear the air and prevent more awkwardness while setting those boundaries clear? peace of mind might be worth burying the hatchet & giving them "rules" about using each other's stuff 🤔
Not sure exactly how I'd react in your shoes either. Might depend on whether the products could be replaced easily or if confrontation feels necessary.
honestly i think anyone would be annoyed about that kind of invasion of privacy especially considering the cost involved...but yeah sometimes reacting immediately isn't always best...a calm confrontation might have saved you both from awkwardness...just my two cents
Yeah, you're probably right about that. A calm talk might've been smarter, but in the moment, I just went with how I felt. It's tricky now though.
oh man, that really sucks! i get why you'd be upset... having someone use your personal things without asking is just disrespectful. but looking back, maybe if you’d confronted them before tossing the products, it might have at least given a chance for a conversation. who knows though, people can be so weird about money and boundaries that sometimes they don't even realize they're overstepping till it's spelled out. been there myself when my roommate kept using my fancy coffee pods like they were free samples lol! tension's never fun but hopefully y'all find a way to squash the awkwardness soon. maybe this experience will help both of you communicate better moving forward 🤞
Reminds me of when my friend used to eat my snacks without asking till we finally talked and laughed about it afterward.
