Seeking advice on overcoming fear

The story

I (F25) have this deep rooted belief (supported by unfortunate past experiences) that once new friends begin to know me more and spend more time around me they will quickly lose interest in maintaining our friendship. I believe that they will find me disinteresting and pity me for having nothing going for me in life and it will all end with us growing distant over time until they just disappear and stop talking to me. I have a lot of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. I am sure this contributes heavily to me developing these beliefs and losing multiple friends over time in this exact way over the years. I am very afraid of people getting to know me and asking me questions. I feel exposed in that vulnerability and looked down on after sharing about myself. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know how do I overcome this fear? I have a few solid friends, but refuse to talk with them or see them often or share much due to this and struggle to make new friends.

Sounds like you've got a real case of the self-saboteur blues. Honestly, your mind's playing tricks on you if it makes you think friends vanish like Houdini after knowing who you really are. 🤷‍♂️ It's not exactly rocket science: real friends stick around 'cause they value YOU, quirks and all. Maybe consider throwing yourself into something new, build up some confidence in an area you haven't before? Trust me, when you're passionate about something, it shines through and people notice that more than any silly doubts.

I totally get it, every time I make new friends they seem to vanish when my 'quirky' side shows up.

Happens to me too, wish people would stick around longer.

It’s understandable to feel anxious about friendships when past experiences haven't been positive, but distancing yourself can perpetuate the cycle. 🙃 It might be helpful to focus on nurturing the connections you already have at a pace that feels comfortable for you. Maybe opening up gradually with your solid friends could help build trust and lessen the fear of judgment over time?

i gotta say, it's wild how our minds can trap us in that loop of feeling like we're not enough; i think there's some truth to what you're feeling because society's constantly shouting all these expectations at us, and it gets loud😓.

ah man, that sounds rough 😕. but honestly, you gotta give yourself some credit! you're a unique person with your own story. there's this saying that goes "those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." maybe try focusing on the small victories in life first? when you start celebrating those little wins, it might get easier to tackle the bigger stuff. we all got our issues but you're more than just what you think are flaws, trust me ✌️.

The thing is, anxiety and self-doubt can seriously mess with your head; these thoughts are like a loop that keep replaying until you believe them. It's wild how our brains just hold onto past experiences, convincing us they'll repeat forever. Ever thought maybe you're reading too much into things? Sometimes friends drift apart naturally over time for loads of reasons...it's not always about you personally!! Remember, everyone has moments when they feel boring or irrelevant! Maybe try tiny steps towards opening up more slowly with those solid friends you mentioned? It might surprise you how understanding and interested people can be when they actually get the chance to know the real you!!!

it's really rough when you're battling those inner demons and feel like life's a constant social experiment gone wrong. i've gotta say, sometimes the isolation can become a vicious cycle; like if you distance yourself out of fear, it becomes kinda self-fulfilling. rebuilding that trust in yourself can be a good starting point, though i know it's easier said than done. ever considered seeking therapy or joining support groups? having an external perspective sometimes works wonders for untangling the web of anxiety and depression. it reminds me how i once thought everybody else had their lives together while mine felt like a never-ending episode of chaos... turns out, most people are just as clueless trying to navigate friendships too!

Ah, the delightful world of overthinking....a place where even a simple hello from a friend sparks existential dread. It seems like you're stuck in a classic case of impostor syndrome, believing that if anyone gets to know the "real" you, they'll bail faster than I can say "self-fulfilling prophecy." While it's easy to get trapped in this mindset, perhaps consider viewing it through the lens of cognitive behavioral therapy. Just reminding yourself that thoughts are not facts might be a game-changer. And who knows? Maybe setting small goals for social interactions could gradually ease you out of the isolation. After all, relationships thrive on authenticity and a touch of vulnerability!! just like any well-directed plot twist in your favorite drama series.

You might be seeing things too negatively, maybe your old friends had other reasons for drifting.

ZanyLavenderAirVagaryInHongKongWithAnger 15d ago

Totally agree! Sometimes we overlook their personal stuff going on.

wow, i totally feel you on this. it's like your brain's working overtime to convince you you're not worth it, right? but seriously, it's wild how these insecurities take root just 'cause past stuff went down. 🤔 maybe try jotting down moments when you've had genuinely positive interactions with people? seeing them in black and white might help fight back against those feelings the brain insists on replaying. don't forget that some folks are there for the long haul and see you as more than just past experiences or fears! 💪

feeling like you'll lose people once they really know you can seriously suck. Ever thought that maybe it's not all about your anxiety or depression, though? Sometimes friends drift away for reasons completely unrelated to us; life happens, people move, interests change. Might sound cheesy but true friends will stick around no matter what. It's worth considering small steps towards opening up gradually...like sharing just a bit more each time. You might be surprised how understanding folks can actually be!
