what is clingy?
The story
so here's the thing, and i don't really know how to start this without sounding like a total jerk but here goes: what is clingy? and no, i'm not trying to be rhetorical or whatever. i genuinely want to know where the line is because it feels like i've crossed into some weird twilight zone where my definition of personal space doesn't exist. okay, let me paint you a picture. i've got this friend (we'll stick with 'friend' for now) who has somehow acquired the unique talent of reaching out at the absolute worst times possible. picture me sitting down after a long day, finally having that moment to just breathe and maybe binge-watch something mind-numbing when suddenly, bam! there's my phone lighting up like it's possessed with messages from them. and it's not like one or two texts...it's an onslaught: 'hey! what's up?', 'how's it going?', 'you busy?', followed by a barrage of memes that aren't even funny half the time.
i try to be polite; respond once in a while. but then we move on to phase two: calls. multiple times during the day like they have some unwritten schedule that requires checking in every couple of hours. do they think i'm just sitting here waiting for their call? i mean, seriously! does anyone else deal with this? it's utterly draining.
and don't get me started on them showing up unannounced! what kind of sitcom nonsense is that? opening my front door to find them standing there with a grin as if they expect applause for their grand entrance... it's disconcerting.
look, i appreciate friends who care, but there's a boundary that's not just being crossed: it's been bulldozed over. i keep wondering how i can talk about this without coming off coldhearted because let's be honest, nobody wants to be labeled 'that' friend who's too blunt or insensitive;
i'm stuck in this gray area wondering if it's me who's wrong or if it's reasonable wanting some space now and then.
