Why do I attract narcissists?

The story

I really don’t get it. Why am I always drawn to people with narcissistic traits? Seriously, it’s like I have a radar or something. Just recently, I made friends with someone who seemed like the life of the party at first. So charming, so engaging. Cue the eye rolls, right? But it didn’t take long for their true colors to shine through. Suddenly, every conversation was about their latest achievement, and my stories? Oh, they were just background noise.

And then there were the decisions. You know, the ones that should involve both of us? Yeah, they somehow always ended up going their way. I left those chats feeling like my opinions didn’t even matter. It’s like I was just there to prop up their ego. Fun times, right?

Now I’m sitting here, questioning my own judgment. This isn’t the first time I’ve found myself in this mess. I can’t help but wonder if I’m somehow attracting these kinds of people. My self-esteem? Let’s just say it’s not exactly thriving after this. Realizing you’re being used as a tool for someone else’s validation is just... delightful.

Looking back at this last friendship, the signs were there, glaring at me. They needed constant admiration and couldn’t handle the tiniest bit of criticism. If I dared to speak up, it was like I flipped a switch and suddenly they were defensive. It’s wild how charming they can be at first, only to morph into something controlling later on.

Maybe it’s my tendency to see the good in people. Or perhaps my patience gets mistaken for acceptance. Who knows? Whatever it is, I’m determined to spot these patterns earlier next time. But man, it’s tough when doubt creeps in and makes you second-guess even the most genuine intentions. It’s like walking through a fog with a blindfold on.

dude, maybe you're looking for the wrong traits in friends? 🤔

sounds like you got that classic "moth to a flame" situation going on. it’s wild how some people can pull you in with their charm and then flip the script. trust me, you're not alone in this boat. been there too! i think it's about figuring out what kind of energy you vibe with better and tuning out the rest, but dang if that isn’t easier said than done when you're in the middle of it. sometimes putting those boundaries up feels like climbing a mountain...

Could be luck but also watch out more closely early on.

I've been through the narcissist tango myself; it's like they have a knack for being just magnetic enough to draw you in, only to turn everything about them and leave you questioning your own worth.

Understanding how narcissists operate can feel like a crash course in manipulation tactics, and I totally get why you’re frustrated with these patterns; think of it like software bugs interrupting your “friendship program” and draining resources without real value being added.

yo, sounds like you might just be a magnet for these personalities. not saying it’s your fault but maybe you're too nice or forgiving? 🤷‍♂️ it's tough, man, when we’re always trying to give people the benefit of the doubt; i've been there too, thinking maybe this time it's different... but nah, people love taking advantage of that. sometimes you gotta start putting yourself first. priority numero uno should be you; see what kind of folk actually stick around when they don’t have someone else boosting their ego all the damn time!

Yeah, maybe you're right. I do tend to be pretty forgiving... maybe too much so? It's just hard to know where that line is without feeling bad for drawing it. Guess I need to get better at spotting when I'm being used.

sounds like drama.

I've been in your shoes more times than I'd like to admit. Sometimes it feels like people with narcissistic traits have perfected the art of initial charm, right? And it's so frustrating when you realize too late that you're just background noise in their world. I get why you'd question your judgment, but maybe this is an opportunity to sharpen those instincts. Over time I've learned to pay attention to how people make me feel during conversations. If I'm consistently left feeling unheard, that's my cue something's off. Maybe that's a strategy worth trying? Recognizing the signs earlier can be empowering and help preserve your self-esteem before it hits rock bottom again! 😊

It’s so strange how certain personalities seem to have this gravitational pull, but maybe it's worth looking into why that initial charm is so captivating for you and figuring out what specifically draws you in.

Author 14d ago

You're right, I do need to dig into why that initial charm hooks me every time. Maybe it's because they seem like they're full of life and excitement at first. It's just so frustrating when it turns out to be all surface-level.

i had a friend like that too.

It's tough having friends like that but stay strong!

SereneMidnightBlueLightningLampInShenzhenWithFear 7h ago

I think it's easy to beat yourself up over this, but remember, charm is designed to be appealing! Maybe instead of trying to avoid these people altogether, you could work on setting boundaries earlier in the relationship. You know, like establishing what feels right for you before things get too deep. It's not about shutting people out but more like giving them a fair chance while also protecting your own peace.
