why does my friend hate me?

The story

Lately, I've been feeling like my friend truly hates me and it's messing with my head. For the past few weeks, they've been acting really cold and distant, and no matter how much I try to talk to them or bring back our old vibe, it's like hitting a brick wall. We used to hang out all the time, enjoying stupid little things together. Remember last summer when we binge-watched that ridiculous reality show? 😂 But now, they barely reply to texts unless it's essential...and even then it's like pulling teeth.

I've tried reaching out several times to see if there's something that I did wrong or maybe something they're dealing with that's making them act this way; no dice. Their replies are curt, almost robotic. It's confusing and honestly quite hurtful because we were tight, like peanut butter and jelly style. And it gets under my skin - am I being overly dramatic or is there something deeper happening here? I've even asked mutual friends if they noticed anything off, but their answers were as vague as an HR meeting 'Thank you for your feedback!' 🙄 Maybe I'm just overthinking everything but I can't help worrying about what I might have done or said that could've changed things between us this dramatically.

I totally understand where you're coming from. I've faced a similar situation before where a close friend suddenly distanced themselves without any clear reason. It turned out they were going through a tough time personally, which made them withdraw from everyone.

PrancingBeigeLightningEaselInVeniceWithEmpathy 20d ago

That's true! Sometimes people just have stuff going on that has nothing to do with us.

Author 20d ago

That sounds really tough... I wish they'd just let me in on what's going on. It's exhausting guessing all the time. I'm glad to hear I'm not crazy, though.

Man, that sounds really tough. Friendships can get so complex sometimes. You never know, maybe they're dealing with some stuff and just don't know how to talk about it yet; people can be weird with communication when they're stressed or anxious. I've been on both ends of this kind of thing before, and it's frustrating trying to figure out what's up without any info. But hey, remember the good times? That reality show binge; classic! Keeping those in mind could help you not lose hope completely. Maybe try giving them a bit of space and see if they come around... sometimes folks just need their own time to sort things out.

hey, it's rough when a friend suddenly does that 180 on you. what you're feeling is totally valid; losing that connection can feel like a punch in the gut. i remember once with a buddy of mine, it turned out there was some kind of misunderstanding between us, something stupid that I wouldn't have even thought mattered... but sometimes people just need space to sort their stuff out. have you thought about giving them some time and maybe they'll come around? or try finding a different way to connect with them that's less direct? it's so easy to spiral into overthinking when communication just stops, right? but hang in there! things might change, and who knows - they might reach out when they're ready.

i get how this can mess with your head, the sudden shift in a close friendship is disconcerting; sometimes people just need space and don’t know how to ask for it. maybe they’re overwhelmed with something and can't process it properly, which leads to them being distant. still, it's really tough to not take it personally when you've been so close... you could give them some time while letting them know you're there whenever they're ready. fingers crossed things get back on track soon!

It really might be that they just need space, but it's so hard not to read into things when someone you care about suddenly flips the switch. I just wish they'd tell me what's up instead of this radio silence. Guess I'll try to hang back a bit and see if they'll come around... fingers crossed!

Man, it's so rough when a friendship just turns ice cold like that!!! 😩 It's crazy-making to try and guess what might've gone wrong; maybe there's some drama on their end they're not sharing. Perhaps putting the ball in their court might shake things up... You know, let them come to you if they feel like it? Just throwing ideas around here! 🤷‍♂️

ugh, it's the worst when someone you trusted just flips the script on you; you're not imagining things, they really are acting shady. there's like this invisible wall now and it drives you insane thinking about every little interaction that could've gone wrong. maybe they're dealing with some deep personal stuff but dude, just a heads up or something would've been respectful... feels like you're being ghosted by a best friend, which is so frustrating! i mean seriously, if they can't give you even an ounce of clarity on what’s happening, then that's unfair to you - friendship shouldn't be that one-sided; 😡

Author 12d ago

Exactly, it's like being ghosted by someone who was a big part of your life. I keep wondering if it's something I did, but just getting an explanation would be nice. Feels like I'm stuck in this guessing game with no way out.

Maybe they just grew apart.

considering your situation, it's possible your friend might be going through something significant that they're not ready to share yet and sometimes people need time alone to sort things out at their own pace; maintaining an open line for when they're ready can help, but in the meantime, focusing on other areas of your life could ease some of this stress and uncertainty.

it's such a tricky spot to be in when someone you're close with suddenly becomes distant. it really messes with your mind, doesn't it? i mean, could there be something they need from you that they're not comfortable asking for? it's strange how things can go from being so tight to feeling like strangers overnight. do they seem this way with others too, or are you noticing it just with you specifically? maybe there's some unspoken thing lingering that neither of you are aware of. whatever's up, hanging onto those good memories might remind them what made the friendship special if and when they're ready to talk.

JazzyCharcoalShadowObeliskInZurichWithPeace 16d ago

maybe it's not something you've done at all but rather just life getting in their way; sometimes people are buried under responsibilities and can't keep up with everyone like they used to.

CuriousBlackWaterZaftigInLasVegasWithShame 15d ago

You should stop stressing so much over it. Friendships sometimes fade naturally; maybe they're just in a different place mentally right now.

Author 15d ago

Yeah, maybe...just hard not knowing what went wrong though.
