Older man
The story
So, my new neighbor, this elderly guy who lives right across the hall, has this bizarre weekly routine of tossing out the most random stuff in our communal trash area. At first, I thought, "Okay, he's just a quirky old man with a penchant for junk." But then one day, I stumbled upon this antique clock that looked like it belonged in a museum or something. Seriously, it was gorgeous, all shiny and intricate. You could tell it was made back when people actually cared about craftsmanship instead of just slapping stuff together.
Now I'm stuck in this moral tug-of-war. Should I just hand this beauty back to him, or do I let temptation win and add it to my sad collection of random knick-knacks? I mean, it feels like a crime against history to just let it go back to the trash, right? But then again, I’m all about being a decent neighbor and not a sneaky thief. I guess that’s my inner C.S. Lewis fan coming out, talking about integrity and all that.
But seriously, how did this clock end up in the trash? Did he think it was broken? Was it just too much of a hassle to take to a pawn shop? I can’t help but wonder what other treasures he’s throwing out. It's like I’ve discovered a secret treasure hunt right in my apartment building. The whole thing is driving me a little nuts. I keep imagining that clock sitting on my shelf, but then I feel this weird guilt creeping in. Ugh, why can’t life be simpler?

You're right; perhaps addressing it politely will clear any unintended misunderstanding.
