qualities of a good parent

The story

so here's the thing... i keep wondering if my parenting style is any good. i've got this annoying habit of constantly comparing myself to my own parents. like, were they setting a good example or screwing things up? and what am i doing, just repeating their same ole mistakes, or maybe learning from them? there's this dark thought gnawing at me: am i doomed to grow into what they were and can't break free of that cycle?

it's kinda like the time when my mom would never let me stay up late on weekends. she'd go all "early bird gets the worm" mode while i'm sitting there rolling my eyes. now i'm thinking, should i be strict about bedtime with my own kids or give 'em a little wiggle room? they're only young once, right? but then again, responsibility matters too. it's a confusing mess.

i keep hearing about how empathy's key in parenting. gotta admit though, keeping your cool ain't so easy when your kid decides to go ballistic over their ice cream falling (the struggle is real). do other folks manage better under stress? or do we all have those moments where we're just trying not to lose it completely?

maybe the whole "it takes a village" saying makes sense... being able to lean on others for advice might help ease that pressure off our shoulders. like last week when my friend said something about parents who try too hard often end up feeling empty inside because they give everything but themselves. felt like an eye opener tbh 🤯 maybe balance is what i need instead of fretting all day.
